Re: Need Shuttle 597V14 picture of IDE1 socket

If stuff elsewhere on the board fried when the caps blew, there's a fairly high probability that there are additional components which failed without obvious external signs of damage. It would not surprise me at all if one or more of the MOSFETs in the VRM are blown.

I don't know anything about the provider you linked. FWIW I've been a satisfied customer of Linode for several years though.

Too bad it needs a chipset fan. I guess that comes with the X570 territory. I think I'll wait until the next chipset iteration which hopefully lowers the power consumption enough to ditch the fan.

Re: Microsoft kills HUP for Office 2019

Unless the latest version of LibreOffice has improved in the past three years, it cannot handle my more advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint files without errors or formatting issues. Yes, unfortunately this still seems to be the case. For basic stuff (which probably covers ~95% of home users) it's ...

TBH if we can't have the old comment system, I'd prefer if each news story just had its own dedicated discussion thread in the forums, linked from the story. Keeps the UI consistent between the article comments and the forum, and solves the issue of integrating the logins. Uggh. I hope not. Forums ...

Go to the BBS for Vogue magazine, start talking about your nice little computer case and the colorful LEDs you put in it, maybe convince someone to try the new AMD chips. The folks there will be confused about your obsession with a silly box, all they know is the dell laptop they got off Sam's club...

The last Cooler Master PSU I owned worked well enough, but seemed awfully lightweight for the rated wattage. I suspect that if I had pushed it close to its rated maximum output it might have released the magic smoke.

I have to say that yes, some of the venom spewed here was over the top. TBH, I was in a state of shock/dismay/denial at the way the whole site transition went down...

I'd avoid drive-managed SMR HDDs like the plague. Supposedly they can work OK with ZFS, but they're an absolute disaster with ext4.

It probably won't tell you anything useful on an SSD unless the SSD is already in such bad shape that it's failing in other obvious ways. All it does is put a little extra wear on the flash.

Re: How to detect SATA issues when HDDs keep going bad?

Using dd the way you did is harmless. In fact that's the recommended way to zero out a mechanical HDD. The only thing I would've changed is to add a bs=1M option to write the data in larger blocks (which will speed things up).

When you say "cache" do you mean automatic caching, or just a faster volume to store stuff you know will be accessed a lot?

Any chance the mounting location for that drive exposes it to excessive vibration?

"Reallocated sectors" are sectors whose contents have been relocated to a spare sector because the original spot on the media has gone bad.

@weirdo - You're completely mis-construing or intentionally mis-representing my viewpoint. I don't doubt that renewables are ramping up and will eventually be huge.
