Re: USB 3.0 WD drive recognizes some cables only as USB 2.0

Given the fact that WD external drives tend to have the USB controller integrated into the actual drive itself...I'd have a backup of it and/or not trust it anywhere near as much as before it behaved poorly. It is not clear to me from this thread whether the problem developed over time, or existed ...

Re: USB 3.0 WD drive recognizes some cables only as USB 2.0

High speed serial connections are very sensitive to cable quality, connector quality, and how carefully the designer of the electronics has laid out the PCB to minimize signal skew/reflections. Every little imperfection in any of the above degrades the signal. The combination of that drive, and the ...

TBF 2015 was a terrible time to switch to Opteron. Bulldozer and its derivatives were on their last legs, and they weren't particularly competitive even when they were new several years prior. Your managing director made the right call there.

Re: Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

I have seen numbers for projected deaths by August in the US are 74K, we aren't expect anywhere near 500K in the US. At one point the projection for wave 1 was 100k to 240K and that has moved down quite a bit. My understanding is that we are expecting, in the US, a little more than the flu or 2x fl...

You're on the right track - SSD OS drive, and large-ish HDD for bulk storage. 2TB limit does not apply to Windows 7 and later. Disk just needs to be formatted GPT instead of MBR. And yes, you want to stay away from HDDs with DM-SMR (drive-manged shingled magnetic recording) tech. As of today, some m...
