Re: TR Redesign: bugs - features - tips

Anyway, Seriously, check the main thread . Everyone has given up on complaining. It's now fighting over whether 10 year old hardware is still usable. That’s because those threads have run their course. Also, when the community gets small enough, everything becomes DYMT. I’d say we’re at that point ...

When the Strategic Air Command received the order from SecDef McNamara to install Permissive Action Links (PALs) on the Minuteman fleet to ensure that ICBMs could not be launched without a direct Presidential order, the code on EVERY PAL in every silo was reset to all zeros as soon as the civilian ...

Re: Something's different...

I generally try to keep the PCs I manage (mostly just family these days) on GPUs which can use current drivers. That's more for security and usability (video playback, multi-monitor) than anything to do with gaming. Current minimum for NVidia is Kepler; for AMD it's a bit more scattershot. Speaking ...

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

Air Force Finally Retires 8-Inch Floppies From Missile Launch Control System Any changes to a system of this age (and with the highest possible stakes) makes me very uneasy. I'd almost rather they kept using the 8-Inch floppies (assuming data integrity would continue to remain intact). These system...

Re: New Forums/Websites For TR Gerbils

Hmmm... I've given some thought to how the community could work moving forward. TechReport, in my eyes, is largely defined by its writing and its community. Content is king as they say, but clearly the presentation of the content (ex: threading, accounts, forum features, etc. etc.) matters a lot to...

Re: Microsoft dropping guide in Windows 8.1 pro w/ Media Center

Have you considered an Xbox One S for a little over $200? While I haven't personally tested or looked much into it, I seem to remember them being given many of the media center features, including an HDMI input port (which can control cableboxes and such) and DVR functionality. You can add external ...

they should probably just nuke the whole thing and start over. Why not migrate the existing posts and users? :) Less time/work/cost, and thus an easier idea to pitch to ownership. Re: New Forums/Websites For TR Gerbils

The fact that Der Funk has some first-hand positive experience with the folks who run Hot Hardware seems like a pretty positive endorsement. It also sounds like gerbil refugees would be welcome to come inhabit their dead forums. So that seems like a pretty promising option to me. Having said that, ...

Re: New Forums/Websites For TR Gerbils

Reddit works well as a meetingplace in a pinch, but it's more or less identical to the "we could spin our own forum" option which I have personal experience with. Said option basically equates to 10'ish guys just shooting the s**t; and they quickly run out of things to talk about. Nothing ...

Re: RAM is stable with 3200 MHz XMP, fails to boot when I slightly tighten timings even with volt increase

You can call me a fuddy-duddy, but that's part of why I bought RAM that runs dead-nuts 2666mhz on an H370 chipset that doesn't allow OC'ing. A small amount of performance is lost with the slower RAM, but I can just select the XMP profile and go, no screwing around, no worrying about stability (thoug...

I've seen a number of people asking about Realtek audio drivers lately, so you're not the only one. I recently had trouble finding them as well, though this driver page seems to be up and available now. Still not good that so many are having difficulty. Considering the install base, I'm sure a very...

Re: Need Advice On An Overdue System Upgrade.

I'm really not a big fan of X570, with its annoying 40mm active cooling and high prices. Just feels like an overall unpolished product, and PCIe 4.0 won't be a factor for some time unless you're planning to use enterprise-class SSDs. If you can get a solid B450 board for $65-85, I'd probably go that...

Re: Need Advice On An Overdue System Upgrade.

RAM is relatively cheap right now; I see no harm there. The $200 motherboard stands out to me. I'd be looking to knock it down $50-80 if possible.

Following up, after reading/watching the review of the Gigabyte 5700XT by Gamersnexus , I went ahead and ordered one direct from Amazon. Re: NFL 2019

What we saw in Thursday's game was a result of the majority of both starting offenses and both QBs not taking a single preseason snap. Both of them came in ice cold and had to go against outstanding defenses. Rodgers took until the end of the first half to get up to game-speed, while Trubisky took t...

Honestly I'm pretty sure that is what gin is :D No.....Gin is the bottle of 1970's cologne that you found waaaay in the back of "dad's cabinet" in the bathroom, covered in an inch of dust. Spin the cap off of that and take a glug. That's gin. I should also add that "sapphire gin"...

Re: NFL 2019

I'm excited to see ma boy David Montgomery start for the Bears as a rookie. He's going to freight train some defenders. Rookie of the year -- you heard it here first! As cool as that would be, it will be fairly difficult to achieve with Nagy using a "RB by committee" approach, even if he ...
