Re: What are you playing right now?

I'm about 2/3rds of the way done with a Skyrim play through but I'm not sure I will finish it. My ADHD kicks in and I end up never working on the main story line;) That game can be a huge time drain :D The first time I played through Skyrim I did just about everything you could do... I forget what ...

Re: Silly linux question

Sounds like it. If you hadn't wiped, it might've been easy to try going back to the previous kernel (since there's a good chance it was still present on the OS disk, just not being selected at boot). At this point, I'd say your options are: A) Live with it (initiate the shutdown, and when it gets s...

Re: Silly linux question

Whatever my issue with the display is, it survived an upgrade to Mint 19. Ctrl-Alt-F1 didn't give me anything but a login prompt, and wouldn't let me type anything... maybe I hit it too early or too late. Anyway, I decided to just go ahead and wipe the machine and install the latest version... same ...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Listening to my absolute favourite album of all time: Days of Future Passed, by the Moody Blues. It's just as spellbinding now as it was a thousand listens ago. Got a subscription to Google Music recently, and decided to check this album out... they have two versions, the original and the 2017 rema...

Re: Silly linux question

Issues like that really suck. Try switching to the first virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) as soon as you initiate the shutdown. There may be some clues in the messages it spews there. Will try that this evening... Aside from that, my recommendation would be to wait and see if the next kernel update fi...

Re: Silly linux question

So... same machine as before, ended up reinstalling Mint and everything seemed cool for months... Few weeks ago I did a kernel update via the update manager and now I've got a weird issue... the machine won't shut down completely. I go to do a shutdown and it'll close the interface and get to the sh...

Re: Amazon Locker weirdness

Yesterday morning I got a pickup notice for a package (with a locker code), followed 4 hours later by a notification that the package was delayed, and should arrive by Wednesday. This AM I decided to try the locker code anyway just to see what would happen, even though the order status was showing ...

Re: What are you playing right now?

Shadow Of The Colossus Fun game... more of a puzzle game than an RPG but it's got plenty of action... basically you have to kill a bunch of giants by climbing them and striking vital points, each one requiring a different type of strategy. Really nice looking game with awesome lighting effects. Cont...

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

So I just got my first SSD installed. This is to replace my aging primary HDD (about 11 years now IIRC). I got the Crucial MX 500 250GB from Amazon, which is crazy because even plus shipping and everything, it's still cheaper compared to getting one in my country. I got this drive because I've seen...

Re: A question regarding storage hardware

I'm sure there are a lot of corporate IT operations which do worse than what you outlined. I've worked with a few of them. Yeah, I know. Can't understand it though. Someone I used to work with discovered that the "off site" backups that IT was supposedly doing of the servers at their loca...

Re: A question regarding storage hardware

Thumb drives are for convenience; they allow you to carry a copy of something on your person. So they're great for carrying copies of installation files, or whatever documents, music, or other media you need to have with you as you walk around. They are not suitable for backups of data or machine st...

Unless I’m expecting a call from a number not on my contact list (like a workman scheduled that day, for example) I don’t pick up numbers I don’t recognize. I get several spam calls per day, but never pick them up. If it’s a legit caller I miss, they’ll leave a message. Yeah...that doesn't help. Ig...

Re: What shows are you recently watching?

I've been binge-watching The Flash for a few weeks now, ever since the latest season hit Netflix. For the most part I like it... it's cheesy but in a fun way. Some of the crossover stuff makes it hard to follow sometimes (I don't have time to watch all four DC series) but it's still good fun. Fear T...

As much as I enjoy the subject, I'm getting a little tired of these "major announcements" and the surrounding buildup, only for it to be that they've found evidence of erosion or a couple of molecules that could - at least in theory - be related to some organic process. Just release the in...

Re: Odd repetitive seeking noise from a supposedly idle hard drive

The description you're giving sounds pretty normal for a drive that size, and a quick Google reveals folks asking about the same thing... basically as JBI says you've got a massive (relatively speaking) set of platters and those are going to make some noise as they stop and start. Also as a result o...

Re: Clicky HDD. Any chance it's normal?

Well, apparently, it's "normal". It would be interesting to corroborate with more owners of this model. The replacement HDD clicks the same. Manufacture date is less than a month apart, but I think that's enough to rule out a bad batch. It's also from a different geographic market. Common...

Meh, whatever. If you want to run a business, don't break the law. If you want to charge for copies of software/books/AV, get permission from the copyright holder. Microsoft has a program for refurbishers. Lundgren chose not to go along with it and sell his alternative--without permission. And I se...

They're definitely worth at least a listen if you're into prog, prog metal, or concept albums / rock opera (like Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar). I doubt I will be buying the entire back catalog, but will pick up a couple or three of their albums for sure. If concept albums are something you like,...

Obi Wan and Yoda didn't go to hide. Obi Wan was watching over Luke from distance because Owen and Beru didn't want him around Luke. Yoda went to Dagobah to preserve the jedi knowledge while telepathically keeping contact with the jedi who survived the order 66. The Obi Wan one is plausible, but whe...

Hell I agree with Luke that the Jedi, as they were, need to end. Given his character in the original trilogy, I actually think his retreating to hermithood made sense. Re: Anyone else playing Dead Maze?

Meh. It sounded cool until I started looking at the reviews. Adding a play-to-win element would be bad enough... but it sounds like the devs are deliberately gearing the game around play-to-win. For example, taking away items that players previously purchased, or adding PvP and making purchased item...

Opeth is a decent enough band when they're doing death metal, but they are frikkin' awesome when they're playing clean. Pale communion and Damnation are both amazing albums.
