Is it wrong that I've used my sous vide as much for beer fermenting (with newly discovered high temperature yeast strains) as I have for cooking food?

Wrong? Brew, that is *brilliant.*

Re: New Ryzen 3 2200G build - random freezes/pauses

Do you use a hard drive? I once had a very slow "Green" 5400 RPM hard drive, which was the thing that caused the issue. Effectively, the hard drive would throttle down severely and sleep. Every now and then, Windows would need a new file from the hard drive, but it'd take 5+ seconds for t...

Re: New Ryzen 3 2200G build - random freezes/pauses

What happens is the computer is up and running. Every once in a while, it just freezes, then goes back to normal after 7 or 8 seconds. It does it idling, it does it in the middle of a game, it does it while surfing the net. I researched a bit and thought maybe the cool and quiet function (C state?)...

Re: Cinebench R20 is out. Officially banned from AMD demos

Hey, this'll be fun to run. I can only wonder what the performance delta will be like between my 7940x and the FX 6300 I'm putting together as a Frankenputer/project PC this week... I'd include my Ryzen 1700 too, but it's not running Windows. Nevertheless, I'll update with my scores when I can.

I'm waiting for the post where it catches on fire and burns the rest of his system just to spite Chuckula. This has been way too suspiciously smooth so far. Presumably leaving the Radeon completely pristine but everything else a smouldering husk? If I had gotten an RX-580 then the fire proble...

Mine did it just the other day, when I swapped video cards and was waiting for the latest drivers to download. My dual screens just... went dark. Re: 2015 MBP battery issue

Am I silly to think that with what Apple hardware costs, the batteries should be a little better behaved? No, it's ridiculous. But there's some weird sunk cost investment people have attached to Apple as a luxury brand, and they're certainly making bushels of money, so it's assumed by many that the...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

It's also THE WORST on low-end systems. I was nursing along an old laptop - Sandy Bridge Core i3 around 1.5 GHz, 320 gig spinning HDD, 4 GB single-channel memory - and throwing Win10 onto it was so dull. I seriously spent three hours just trying to install patches and figuring out why some of those ...

Tl;dr - Fine for video games and everyday work, but I trust Ubuntu's stable releases a lot more for predictable stability these days. If you've got the option of using Linux on your workstation, don't hesitate. You know, I used to just sneer ( as a linux user, even! ) at this attitude -- just use l...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

At this point Windows 10 is the way forward in Microsoft's PC paradigm, whether anyone likes it or not. When it works, it's good, but when it doesn't, it's somewhere between a black box requiring an IT background to suss out its problems and a Jack Russell terrier's brain driving a robot with bounda...

Re: CHUCKULA IS GOING AMD..... CONFIRMED!!!!

So that's why I'm gettin' me an RX-560: It's cheap, and it has the hardware accelerated HEVC playback that I need. The fact that Linux drivers are (supposedly) better with AMD and that there's hardware VAAPI support for the onboard HEVC decoder doesn't hurt either. We'll see how well the card works...

Who else is excited about Intel's Xe?

It may not be a miracle of silicon out of the gate, but the idea of three capable GPU vendors all vying for consumer dollars has me kind of excited. I'm looking forward to seeing what they offer, how capable it is for OpenCL compute, and to day one Linux support. What about the rest of you?

As JBI notes, stock prices are always forward-looking. This isn't about what they did in Q4 and 2018, this is about what they said they expect for Q1 and 2019. A 7% stock price drop for a 1.6% shortcoming. Yeah, tell me again how Wall Street's a rational actor. Actually, I'd say Wall Street's react...

Re: Aged system crashing. Getting new PSU as first step...

Another possible culprit is the BIOS battery may be on its last legs. If the BIOS battery dies, the BIOS settings typically will reset to defaults. So unless the system is unstable at stock settings I doubt the battery is the culprit. That said, 10 years is a long time for a BIOS battery. It is pro...

It's roughly equivalent and readily available. But if you have a 1070 Ti, it'd be foolish to jump ship based on currently available software and the 2060's smaller amount of RAM.

Well, it's not the worst news you could get. If you can find a special on a GTX 1050 Ti, that'd absolutely smoke the 560 Ti in a smidgen of the power budget.

There's no question it'll be fast, but rocking a TDP of a quarter kilowatt, it'd better be. Beyond that, everybody's either stuck with the current process or waiting for this year's round of products to shake things up. Dropping a huge amount of cash for bragging rights in a market that's been stagn...

Re: Good ol' fashion troubleshooting a gpu

Fermi cards are infamous for drawing a lot of power. Even if power usage elsewhere in the system is low, it may be drawing momentary peak voltage that exceeds what the Rosewill can manage. Krogoth's right: get the box a new, reputable PSU - for reliability's sake it needs one anyway - and see if the...

Re: GTX 1070 Ti at $350: Return or Keep?

The Anandtech review's closing thoughts make it sound like 2060 performance is nigh indistinguishable from the 1070 Ti you have on hand. That 6GB framebuffer's going to begin pinching in the near to medium term as well, a problem the 1070 Ti's relatively generous 8GB doesn't have. And finally, I'm s...

I mean, at the very least it'd be nice to see the CPU-driven portion of PhysX rewritten to use SIMD instead of grody old x87. Whether that's possible without fundamentally changing behavior for applications relying on it remains to be seen.
