I hope Renee doesn't think that we are upset and lashing out that it somehow has anything to do with her gender. Gerbils haven't been shy about what's upsetting them. They've mentioned at least 16 specific problems with the site, as well as general disapproval, in reaction to her introductory post....

What's a good source for system guides, like the ones Tech Report has, or used to have?

Just planning in case I have to change sources. :-(

Ready Boost was designed for systems with very little RAM, 1 GB or 2 GB. It won't be useful on a system with 16 GB of RAM.

Re: What's the difference between the Amd Radeon RX 580 and the Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 ?

The GPU is the same, but the different vendors can package them differently. For one thing, vendors will often have different models with different amounts of memory. Different vendors will also have different memory speeds, different fans, different ports (HDMI or DisplayPort or whatever), etc. For...

Re: How much VRAM for a casual gamer?

So I replaced my RX 460 with 2 GB with an RX 580 with 8 GB, even though I didn't get as good a deal as I hoped, and OMG, as the kids used to say. :-) One thing I didn't expect is that Doom is now giving me a lot more hints (about glory kills, etc.). I expected better graphics, but I didn't expect mo...

At least Renee has stopped posting, which is progress, I think.

(I don't want to be too harsh on her, and in fact I defended her in a way, but she obviously didn't understand the audience.)

If, at some point, we could get a rough idea of the scale of the cost of running the site as it was/is, that would be invaluable. If subs carried a few percent, are we talking $50k a year total? $200k? I understand it probably can't be posted exactly, but I think it's one of the problems with this ...

Microsoft's silly SmartScreen warns you if you're downloading an uncommon file. That's why some authors have started to distribute single files in zip format, because SmartScreen doesn't warn about uncommon zip files. If you're concerned, check the file with Virus Total . Edit: I've just checked the...

In spite of some controversy about the program, I still like CCleaner , with CCEnhancer , to remove unneeded files. MS-DOS 6's Defrag was actually a licensed and simplified version of Norton Utilities' Speedisk, and I think the screenshot you posted is similar to Speedisk's Windows version.

Edit: yes, here's NU 8's Speed Disk for Windows 3.1.

Re: I've been trying Raxco Perfect Disk for NTFS Defrags

What do you think of Defraggler ? It seems popular , but I don't get it. It adds fragmentation by breaking apart large files (maybe because I'm stopping it in the middle), the time estimation is way off and is disconnected from other stats (2GB fragmented, 20 hours to go?), the stats and progress i...

How much VRAM for a casual gamer?

I have an RX 460 with 2 GB of VRAM. I'm just a casual gamer; the most demanding game I'm likely to play is Doom.

I hope to get an RX 580 or RX 590 once the prices presumably drop in a month or so. How much VRAM should I get? Is 4 GB enough for me, or should I get 8 GB?
