Looks like you missed the part where Jeff's byline was removed at his request.

Re: Something's different...

What if the site is so bad that your author handle was somehow linked to the votes your posts had produced? So that when you changed it back to "sweatshopking", that's what basically wiped the counters under your own post? That would take some work to make happen since there would have to...

Re: Something's different...

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a very likely cause for the votes to be wiggy, but clearly there's still a lot left to do before things start behaving properly again, so who knows. The funny thing about the votes is: yes, of course, they're useless. We know they're useless, and that's ok, but if they'...

Re: 4K gaming question

Yeah, waiting is a good idea. Even if the picture doesn't change much on hardware requirements April 2020 is far enough out that the pricing probably will. You could always just go with the sledgehammer approach and build a monster PC that could handle just about anything within reason for the next ...

Re: Something's different...

The fact that it's far easier and more profitable to create noise than signal shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone. The problem is the people behind the scenes don't seem that interested in separating the two, and I guess you can't really blame them if most people don't seem to care anyway. I'm ...

Yeah, the caching has been wiggy for a while now. It throws the number of comments displayed for each story off also which makes it difficult to tell at a glance if there's anything new.

Heh, I remember when people were worried about TR turning into Ars. Funny how perspective can change in the face of something like this. Anyway, I pinged Renne about cancelling my sub. I guess we'll see if she does anything about it, or if I just have to wait and dispute the charge when March rolls ...

Re: Something's different...

I have a feeling that the posts they're looking for are like a lot of requests the site already gets, ads wrapped up as "articles". Yeah, that was my first thought also. The Switch article was light on details, but still reasonably coherent. The cloud services listicle was clearly somethi...

Re: Kempner Rice Diet

You would hope, but I'm not so sure. I was thinking the other day about how I was asked once many years ago now if I plagiarized an analogy in something I wrote about CPU caches. Obviously it was a technical forum(long since dead and gone), but the audience wasn't what you'd call a group of academic...

It's not about what I believe, dude. Ironically with what we're learning about the microbiome we do seem to be heading in a direction where there's precedent for saying that a diet which "works" for one person may not work for another. However, there are limits.

Re: Migrate to M.2

Just to confirm, "2.5 inch drive" as in the squished mechanical drives that used to be popular in laptops? USB stick + dd and gparted is probably what I'd do also. There shouldn't be any special rules about migrating on to an M.2 drive. Older boards can have problems booting from a PCIe SS...

I'll likely be ripping out the water cooling in that case and going with the in-box air cooler for now. If I end up wanting to overclock, I can always put it back in or use one of the AIO or other kits I have. I did the same thing WRT to watercooling. It's not necessary these days to keep noise lev...

It's all the same really. If I was researching cloud services, then that's exactly the kind of page I'd skim for two minutes before deciding "well, that's useless", moving on and forgetting I was ever there.

That was the Internet version of a grilled cheese sandwich. It's not going to sustain you, but for a little while it can fool your body into thinking you've had real food by providing something that fills a little space and has a familiar texture.

Yeah, carousels are just one of those things which look good on paper but don't really work out so well in reality. If you're Amazon, and 10% of your total traffic is still a stupidly huge number, then nobody cares. For everyone else chances are there are better alternatives available. That's assumi...

Yeah, I think you are right about needing DOS that underlies Win95 and Win98. The ISA slot HP 82355 GPIB card that runs the instrument; talks to the OS via interrupts (e.g. IRQ 5, IRQ 3, etc...) via GPIB address (e.g. 1 through 16) and all the PCI designs get rid of interrupts which this device nee...

I see there's a carousel on the homepage now for featured articles. Don't be surprised when looking at the analytics if there's some serious longtail action happening. I appreciate the lack of auto-scrolling, but once something gets 3 or 4 slides deep in the carousel there's probably not going to be...

Again, context. 276.1 million vehicles traveling ~13,000 miles per year. It happens, but it's not an epidemic. Also, 345 deaths when the US averages ~37k auto-related deaths year ( Wiki ). That means that vehicle fires account for 0.095% of all vehicle fatalities. Terrifying. Yeah, I'm not surprise...

I guess if you're going to cite some random forum thread as a credible source, then I shouldn't be surprised that some random youtube video would be also.

After reading Fall, I can't read something like this without thinking about it. Stephenson got that so right it's almost kind of creepy.

It's a weird placement for sure. I guess if they aligned it with a fan hub such that there wouldn't be much direct airflow over that spot anyway, then it may not be as bad as it looks. Still, I would have thought they would integrate it into the top or bottom instead of dropping it somewhere in the ...

The estimated mileage is what I was thinking of also. Self-immolation is no doubt a rare occurrence for a new car of just about any kind, but once it's been dinged, dented, beat up, exposed to the elements, and who knows what else for who knows how many years there's a lot more wiggleroom for things...

I've always thought this was the real reason why science based professions are rare in comparison to many others. It's not that people in general aren't smart enough, but that most are uncomfortable being proven wrong in the face of opposing data or a lack of data that's conclusive. We all believe t...
