To fix DX: Install GPUZ. Click the rendering test. Prompts to install DX9 runtimes. Or just search and download from MS.

to recap, is this correct? * System boots to Windows with no card, iGPU only. * System POSTS but hangs with dGPU slotted but not powered auxiliarily (PSU-direct)? * System does not POST with dGPU powered properly by slot and PSU-direct? or is it booting but artifacting in this config? I would replac...

Re: SSD 2.5" USB 3.0 Enclosure - Recommendation

haha, yes I see the date, but just to play along: You'll have a very hard time buying new Sandforce (-controller based) SSDs. Intel 535 is the most recent I can think of. I have plenty of Sandforce based SSDs still in service, working perfectly. In fact, I'm pretty sure I haven't lost a Sandforce dr...

Re: Half FPS vs Gaming Site's I7 4790 with GTX 1070 WHY?

Just throwing this out there...the latest GPUZ versions show CPU util % and System Memory Util % at the bottom of the sensors tab. In some certain situations, it almost obviates the need for Task Manager.

Hey new EIC, Seth, we'd like to hear from you!

You have a lot to catch up on, buddy! I trust you, because I trusted Jeff when Scott turned it over, and that worked out pretty well. I don't expect a manifesto or anything, but I sure would like a virtual introduction. I read your Twitter feed back to the early NFL season, so I have a general idea ...

Best i got is from the mobo manual.

2 CPUs & 4 DIMMs
CPU1: P1-DIMMA1/P1-DIMMD1
CPU2: P2-DIMMA1/P2-DIMMD1

Sweet looking board. With all those cores and all that PCIe, I'd say it almost looks epic.

Re: I7-930 Upgrade Opinions/Options? ($300-$600ish)

Honestly, Z77 + i7-3770 isn't really that much of an upgrade, and having a few Ivy Bridge Xeons around, I'm kind of "a fan" of Ivy, if you can call it that. One exception would be power consumption, where Ivy is an Intel champ. I love dabbling with old systems, but I also don't know if I w...

Re: NETGEAR and the R6700 Nighthawk - Buyer beware

While we're on the topic of USG (but completely unrelated to Netgear) I have the little 3-port USG, and I've been using IPS for a few months. My Comcast cable is limited at 130 Mbps down and I get between 90 and 110 with IPS on. Good enough for me to leave it on. If I had the 250M package or up, I w...

Re: Remote access to an outbuilding

If we think of your house's wireless connection as the HOST, and the barn/shed as the CLIENT, you absolutely have to go into the CLIENT's config and set it to connect to the HOST. I do exactly this to connect my upstairs and downstairs. I like MAC address filtering/ACLs in this case - you can make i...

Re: Secure erase an SSD without a manufacturer-provided program

FWIW (while we're on that one) the security freeze can usually be unlocked by sleeping the system, and letting it wake up 5 seconds later. PartedMagic makes it super simple. If you've disabled a bunch of power management in the UEFI, this may not work, but it's BY FAR the easiest way to secure erase...

Re: Help me finalize my new build

I'm an Asus mobo buyer/user, primarily, but I don't like the TUF series. They cheap out on the NIC and audio, and sometimes ports. I like to start at the Prime/Pro line, and work up to the first ROG level, if necessary. I wanted mATX last time I went Intel, and it was Kaby Lake era, so ROG Z270G for...

I really would separate out Gaming Workstation, and Home Server. It's a minor hassle to have AD on ESXi, not because of performance, just the occasional maintenance. I still do it anyway. I usually have to temporarily change DNS servers from AD to router+OpenDNS on ESXi host and gaming workstation t...

Still participating with a 1060, 960, and part-time 660. I even got curious about an Ivy Bridge Xeon E3-1240v2 in a Supermicro 1U. 69W, 22nm, 3.4/3.8, what the heck. Surprisingly, it was cranking 35,000 PPD on 4 threads and only drawing 40W through the CPU package, staying at all-core 3.6 GHz. Total...

Re: Upgrading or buying new pc

I don't see any power supply specs listed for that model, and my guess is that will be the biggest limiting factor. Also, does the PSU have a PCIE 6-pin power connector? FM2+ socket can handle Trinity, Richland, and Kaveri APUs, which can still game acceptably with the right GPU. A8-6500 and up woul...

Phanteks. Hinged panels, magnetic latches - opening up for a quick SSD addition and cable-routing adventure could not be easier. Glass is a good sound dampener, apparently. Here is an example.

Nvidia 399.24 from 09/10/2018 is stable here on 1060, 960, and 660. It's what Windows 10 1803 updates to when you update through Device Manager. GTX 1060 6GB and GTX 960 2GB (both EVGA SC single fan) and now contributing ~400k and ~175k, after upgrading both systems to 399.24 from 397.64. This is for Frankie now, but afterwards I have to stay ahead of Topinio! I'm currently 4 ahead, and 2 behind JBI.
