Re: What happens if I upgrade?

Microsoft support reps are pretty happy to let you own a " Trigger's Broom " PC and move your license across as many times as you want. I think they've become even more lenient since W10 because it's in their interest to ensure that people are on W10 monetising you perpetually as a user ra...

Re: PC Issue - turning off after startup

Reseat everything if you can too. Marginal problems like this are just as likely to be a loose connection somewhere as they are to be faulty hardware. Poweroff on a cold boot but success the second time around sounds to me as if the normal boot settings are unstable and you're booting in BIOS safe s...

Re: Cheap gaming pc upgrade

As much as I hate telling people to spend money, if the PSU really is marginal it might be a good idea to budget replacing it. You'd hate for your friend to buy all this new gear then have some of it get damaged by a PSU failure. ^^ This If it's a modern 80+ PSU then he's likely fine. Even when the...

TPU has a pretty decent number of cards tested per review. The performance/$ of an RX570 is outstanding, but this review was from October 2018 and RX 570 cards are almost $50 cheaper now than they were then! https://tpucdn.com/reviews/Sapphire/Radeon_RX_590_Nitro_Plus/images/performance-per-dollar_1...

Re: Studio Speakers/Monitors - Tweeters - Horns/Compression Drivers, Ribbons or Dome?

It's peak volume vs quality. The compression/horn drivers work better for cinema, concerts, outdoor events requiring very loud volumes blaring in all direcitons. The horn is an wide-angle amplifier of the sound waves but the quality of the sound suffers from various wave modes, resonance, etc. The r...

Probably to avoid minor scratches and injuries from contaminating the floor with blood, which would require nanny-state cleanup squads to interrupt the flow of the tournament. Re: Cheap gaming pc upgrade

Get an RX 570 instead of a 580, I've seen them as low as $135 and they're about 90% the speed of a 580. Yes, 4GB less VRAM sounds like it could be an issue, but no current game is going to need more than 4GB at 1080p and by the time that games don't run acceptably on 4GB, the 570 won't have the fill...

It's not a terrible idea, you just need to find out what your company policy is. If your company policy is super strict and your C drive contains mission-critical, valuable confidential data I can understand them totally locking you down - including the BIOS to prevent you running a portable OS on r...

Re: Advice Needed: The Latest 2019 Crop of Gaming Laptops

I would love to get a gaming laptop or something as I travel a lot. My company issued me a Dell Precision M4800 but I don't game with it as we aren't allowed to put games on them and the Quadro K1100m is a pretty lame gamer. I get pretty bored most nights as I don't watch TV and I thought about get...

There's another missing option: "I'm an unwilling participant" Other than the occasional blinding blue power indicator LED, is there really such a thing? I don't own any RGB-lit gear. My RTX has a green LED logo. I believe it's possible to turn it off in software but only with some horrib...

Re: Advice Needed: The Latest 2019 Crop of Gaming Laptops

The RTX 2080 Max-Q is only 80W, but the thin & light laptops from Acer/Asus/Lenovo still use multiple tiny whiny fans with short lifespan. Notebookcheck says the Acer Triton is actually okay but their definition of okay is 47dB of whiny fan noise and a hot 59C chassis temperature that relegates ...

Re: Advice Needed: The Latest 2019 Crop of Gaming Laptops

IMO you want yourself a thin, light, modest gaming laptop with thunderbolt 3 @ PCIe 3.0 x4, then get yourself an external graphics dock. Unless you really really really really need to be able to move that power around with you, having high power draw components in laptops isn't viable or cost effect...

Re: Upgrade path suggestions please

Yes, heavy population areas in MMOs, as well as large 64-player fps maps, do ask more of a processor. Whether the game in question needs single-threaded performance or multi-threaded performance is very much down the game in question. If you don't know the answer for your MMO of choice, an easy way ...

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

Broadwell wasn't a tock either. Haswell is still only one architectural generation behind *Lake, and the IPC gains from Haswell to Skylake weren't huge. The first *Lake part (i7-6700K) still clocks to around 4.8GHz before 1.4V and will outperform any stock i7 or i9 in the majority of gaming tests st...

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

As others have said, that sounds like more of a sidegrade than an upgrade, and it'll probably run you at least $500. Yes, 6C/6T Coffee Lake is marginally better than 4C/8T Haswell, but your $500+ may net you less than 4% improvement, even in the most CPU-demanding scenario of ultra settings at low r...

Re: Upgrade path suggestions please

For the 40-60fps you're talking about, the i5 really isn't holding you back that much. Unless you have some itching desire to blow several hundred dollars on a new CPU/Motherboard/DDR4/Cooler, you're much better off putting some of that money into a better graphics card. The latest processors really...

Re: Upgrade path suggestions please

Native 4K in AAA games is a lot to ask of any graphics card! I'd be tempted to say that the Vega56 is your best bet for 4K performance on a budget, expecially with the recent price cuts, but you'll need to spend 2080 or 1080Ti money to get 4K@60fps in most modern titles. A combination of reduced det...

Re: GPU not working

Right off the bat, there are three obvious things to try: 1) Check the BIOS and make sure that the graphics selection is set to Auto or PEG (PCI Express Graphics). It could be trying to use the IGP outputs which don't have any monitor connected. 2) Update your BIOS. Even though the Z390 is a new bo...

Re: This should be in with laptops but you'll see why it isn't when read

configurable/boutique laptops tend to have a price premium and their modular nature tends to make them uglier (configurable keyboards look pretty dated compared to the modern 'floating chiclet' look, for example). Likewise, they are generally bulkier because everything needs a slot or socket rather ...

One of my gripes about computer monitors these days is that they seem to have gotten dimmer. I assume that it has to do with wanting to be energy efficient, but it seems like every monitor nowadays is 300 or 250 cd/m^2. You can put a 400 cd/m^2 monitor next to a 300 cd/m^2 monitor and most people w...

I don't think you mean 2K and I don't think you mean 970ti. One isn't a gaming resolution and the other doesn't exist ;) A 2070 is capable of 144fps gaming even at 1080p with the right CPU, even with the eye candy turned up. Re: Fractal Design Core 2300/2500 discontinued?

Wait, what? I've used Fractal Core cases and don't they have basic, flimsy steel side panels? Single layer sheet steel, no soundproofing, no cross-bracing, no filtering or fan-mount damping on those intakes and no cable-management from them either. I would say that they're decent budget cases and th...

I had to use DDU last night for the first time since installing W10, and realised that I can't get to safe mode any more. For what it's worth, the RTX 2060 is one of the best performance/$ cards on the market right now. It's GTX1080 performance at $349 instead of $549. It's certainly better value than Vega/Polaris/Pascal. Ignore RTX raytracing, it's utterly pointless ; As a traditional GPU though, I'm pleased with my R...

More pertinently, what's so broken about your Windows 10 install that you're failing/refusing to install updates?

Fix the OS before you fix the drivers, otherwise you'll just need to do it all over again after the update!
