Re: AMD Ryzen Mobile Issues

Google how to force intstall the official AMD adrenaline drivers too. It's possible (done it with my 2700U) but if everything's running okay I'd leave it as AMD pledged to support Ryzen mobile directly at CES, promised support was due to start "Q1 2019". I keep getting the error that I ha...

Re: Who else is excited about Intel's Xe?

Intel IGP drivers have slowly changed from "downright useless" to "passable" over the last 18 months or so. Game compatibility on Intel IGPs have changed from "might run" to "will probably run" in the last 18 months or so. I'm not expecting miracles, but if In...

Re: Half FPS vs Gaming Site's I7 4790 with GTX 1070 WHY?

Ah yeah - just spotted that. I'm happy to blame Dell and their terrible factory OS image, along with modified windows power profiles. I've seen several sites (most recently LTT) run into Dell's idiocy and unable to explain it. An OS nuke and install from scratch without using Dell drivers or softwar...

Wait, this thread is still going?! Have you ruled out the FC5 benchmark itself yet? Run something synthetic with lots of sites that will give you approximate results for a 1070. 3D Mark or Unigine are commonly tested: ⋅ 3DMark Firestrike on the 'ultra' preset should give you somewhere in t...

Re: Decently priced USB Sound Card / DAC

Driverless DACs do nothing when it comes to providing any sort of software or virtual surround, which means you either buy one that does, or find some 3rd party software if you want that, and I find that concept worthless for gaming. Powered speakers don't need amps either. I wouldn't recommend buy...

Re: Who is still using PCI slots these days?

Will probably move my Xonar to the new Ryzen system once that build gets off the ground. I'll probably keep the old FX-8350 build around for a while though (I typically do this whenever I upgrade). It has a PCI slot, so I may pop my old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or M-Audio Revolution in there so it s...

Re: Intel declares bankruptcy (RIP 1968-2019)

To be fair, AVX512 looks amazing. I do a lot of computational linear algebra for work, and for now there are still many more cpu cores available vs. gpus. I would imagine the installed base of machines that support CUDA or OpenCL currently outnumber Cannon-Lake and Skylake-X machines by a factor th...

Looks fine to me (photobucket has lost whatever detail you were attempting to capture). You're not going to find a CPU worth upgrading to that will fit in your motherboard. The next generaion after yours used a completely different socket and motherboard. Just use it until it dies, and then replace ...

When you say the audio out from the monitor crackles, are you talking about the rubbish built-in speakers, or are you talking about the analogue 3.5mm headphone jack running off the monitor's internal audio DAC?

Re: Help! Not enough Sata ports

At $30 for a clunky fix of using a Marvel add-in board, you might as well return the mobo and buy one that's $30 better - for a long-term system on a power-hungry K-series chip that needs to last many years, I'm not sure an ultra-budget board with minimal power phases and VRM cooling is a good idea....

First SATA port: The 1TB drive is going to be worthlessly slow and old compared to your other storage. Transfer the contents to the 4TB drive and ditch it. Second SATA port: USB internal header to USB-A Female adapter > USB to SATA adapter > The slowest 512GB SSD. In saying that, the ASUS Prime boa...

I've skimmed the thread and concluded motherboard too. When I get this sort of situation at work the only way to remain sane is to isolate ev...

Re: GTX 1070 Ti at $350: Return or Keep?

The 2060 uses more power to deliver slightly more performance. If you value low noise, the 1070Ti is worth keeping, IMO.

It lacks RTX features, but all evidence so far seems to point towards RTX hurting performance too much to be worth the benefits, and the 2060 is the weakest RTX performer anyway.

"Soon" ™

Awesome new battery tech is only one step closer to reality than the promise of working fusion reactors. Proving that a concept is acually possible and making it viable enough to replace the incumbent technology are two very different things.

PCIe 2.0 is still good enough for me at home. Or maybe I'm on 3.0, I can neither remember nor care what PCIe version Z77 has. Even PCI 1.0 (simulated as PCIe 3.0 x4 on modern hardware) will permit 94% of a a 2080Ti's peak performance, assuming anyone is dumb enough to spend so much on a graphics car...

Re: Need some advice on CPU air cooler

The 9700K is the best Intel choice, IMO. Intel's hyperthreading was never really that great, and it's been hurt badly by all the spectre and meltdown patches as well. On top of that, hyperthreading sees only very small gains (single-digit percentile) in gaming, and the eight non-HT cores of the 9700...

Re: Get your salt shaker handy -- Radeon 7 too expensive to sell?

I think AMD fabricated a whole bunch of boards for MI50, hoping that the server vendors would lap them up, but then had a load of excess stock because it's REALLY REALLY HARD to actually buy a server with MI50. All the vendors prefer to scale out with MI25 instead - probably better thermals, more fl...

IMO Destiny and Destiny2 were ruined by the rapid-release rate of DLCs at pretty low value for money in terms of content they provided, and despite being a premium-cost AAA title, it was still full of MTX and lootbox gambling. The core gameplay was pretty solid. I wouldn't rate it the best game ever...

Re: Impact of various SSD brands on laptop battery life

As expected, the worse the NAND, the higher the battery life cost.

MLC > TLC > QLC.

I keep saying it, but QLC is just a bad idea, period. The controller cost/performance/power consumption overheads are simply too high to justify the cost savings, even at high capacities of 1TB or more....

The 470 is a power hog, but otherwise no - you should not be concerned about running these older cards. It supports CUDA too, if you plan to do any editing with apps that take advantage of it. Otherwise, the only real concern is the power consumption. It would seem that the older 400-series cards ha...

Zen 2 server hardware (Rome) was sampled to partners...

The XC-830 has a PCI-Express x16 slot with support for a half-height graphics card.
