Ryzen 2600 Ubuntu 18.04.1 beeps on boot

I've just put together a new system with a Ryzen 2600, Gigabyte B450M DS3H motherboard, 2x4GB Ripjaws 4 memory, Samsung 970 Evo, and running Ubuntu 18.04.1 I connected the motherboard buzzer and as well as doing the normal high pitched single beep at boot, it does a second lower pitched and slightly...

Re: Alternatives to renting a fiber DSL gateway?

Fiber (glass) is different from DSL (copper). What is the actual connection that they have? If it is over DSL is it ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL, pair bonded? Only then can we tell what will work with what they have.

All those combined modem / router / WiFi boxes are garbage. Put them in bridged mode, use a proper router and a proper WiFi setup like Ubiquiti

What? They’re bi-directional. (Except for some of the active ones) You're thinking of DVI - HDMI. DisplayPort is a different animal. DisplayPort is a packet-based protocol (more like Ethernet). Converting DP to HDMI or vice-versa with a passive adapter is simply not possible. There's Dual-Mode ofte...

Re: Space Thread

Soyuz launch abort at about 2 minutes of flight time, which is when boosters separate. Crew is safe after a ballistic reentry. Sounds like it was a lot gentler than the ballistic reentry in 1975 which pulled 21G :o but still rough at more than 6 G. This is going to be interesting, do you continue t...

If you're not willing to rewire your house to provide 220V@30A on a dedicated circuit to your listening room, you obviously don't care about audio fidelity.
With gold plated oxygen free copper unidirectional wire please! :)

Re: DYMT: Imi's Legacy

I found out just now that you can route the audio from one AppleTV to a second one. So now both are plugged in. One via HDMI for video-only to the projector. One with optical for audio-only through the receiver. The audio from the main AppleTV routes through the old one and we are good to go. For o...

Another podium where the Mercedes drivers are both upset and Vettel happy, just like Monaco in 2015.

I thought that they would switch the drivers back around at the end to not take Bottas' win from him, but I can understand the logic in giving Hamilton 7 more points.

We really don't get tornadoes around here, maybe every 2 or 3 years someone's shed will get blown over and there will be some argument about whether it was a microburst or a tornado, but nothing proper. From the reports I've seen, this was at least an EF2 that hit Dunrobin and half a dozen houses no...

Had a tornado come through Ottawa yesterday around 5pm. It trashed a few homes but only 5 people in hospital. Unfortunately it also trashed one of the 2 power connections between the Ontario grid and the city grid. We live a bit of a distance from where the tornado was so we had no damage but were w...

Re: Receive Side Scaling - latency hazard?

Trying to plot latency along the path is pretty meaningless. The routers on the Internet forward traffic in hardware, anything that requires a reply gets punted to CPU and is no longer representative of what is going on for forwarded traffic. Endpoint latency is really the one thing that matters. As...

Finally, you can channel X over ssh--with some added configuration--meaning that you can display X apps running on the server on the mac (not in the console, but in their own windows with Xquartz). Unfortunately, X applications are usually a bit ugly in the OS X environment or maybe I never cared e...

What I want to do on the audio side is, well, unique. I've been playing around with a Biamp Tesira ServerIO with an AVB connection and a Mac that outputs directly to it. The unique thing is that I can actually pass high channel count audio like an ripped Atmos Blu-ray and get 16 discrete audio chan...

Re: CPU architecture router performance

Others have covered it with the practical side of home routers. For those interested in the theoretical aspects, once packets are no longer forwarded by the ASIC and get punted to the CPU, x86 is cache coherent where the usual ARM DMA engines are cache incoherent. There are some ARM DMA engines that...

If you are going for CCIE then your head is going to be too full of the Cisco ways to do things, you don't want to be trying to cram Linux in there at the same time. Having said that, TCP/IP networking was originally developed on BSD and most research these days happens on Linux. If you only know th...
