Have you run the speed test that dposcorp requested? That will settle the issue nicely, I think. If it's performing right, that's the most important thing, IMO.

Re: Broken MBR, no admin rights. Lost.

Hi Biffzinker, Interesting, you may be on to something. I did format both partitions 1 (100 MB) and 2 (119GB) of the disk where win7 was installed, but I did not remove them entirely as I could not find an option for this, and settled for installing to partition 2. I may have to go in for a second ...

Re: Broken MBR, no admin rights. Lost.

The recovery partition for Windows 10 occupies 450 MB then you have a 100 MB partition for EFI, (hidden) 16 MB partition of un-allocated space, and then the partition of the remaining drive space containing Boot, Windows installation plus your Apps/Data. You've mixed up a few things there. MS defau...

Re: Linux Mint malware warning

I was waiting for that. I wonder how much this will pragmatically hurt this distro. Saturday morning over coffee I installed Ubuntu-MATE 16.04 LTS Beta 2 in a VM. It made me appreciate the theming and art-work in Linux Mint. But, within an hour or so of setting up the panels, installing apps, and t...

What happens to an account of the deceased? Right now? Nothing. Time for mod huddle-think. Leave it so no one creates it again and logs on and uses it. A sort of memoriam. When Twofer died many years ago, I did pretty much the same thing (Leaving it alone and being able to look over his old posts a...

Re: Linux Mint malware warning

Edit edit: I see you have a Dell M4800 - what sort of hybrid graphics does it have, and how well does Arch handle those for you? I keep wondering how well hybrid graphics work - sounds like muxerless/newer ones are better - but Ubuntu does actually have some hybrid GPU systems certified. (AMD anywa...

Re: Linux Mint malware warning

They are the two flagship RPM based distros, and they are similar. They're not as close as Debian and Ubuntu, but they're closer then RHEL and Debian. I'd go even further and say that Ubuntu is a superset of Debian and SuSE is an alternate of RH, though not RHEL. There's too much alike between them...

Re: Linux Mint malware warning

Honestly, if linux is going to go mainstream, we need to have one major distro that's well supported by all the OEMs. Ubuntu seems closest to this IMO (they actually have a hardware certification list with the OEMs... whoa). I went from the i5-2500K to an i5-3570 to an i7-4790K, and don't regret any of those steps, but I think I'll sit here for a good long while. Broadwell/Skylake hasn't added anything I want.

I've been using Google Voice for a year now (at least) on the 5GB/100min/unlimited texting tmobile plan. Google Fi: How much downtime is enough?

So some backstory, I'll keep it as brief as I can, it's not in my nature, really. I bought a Nexus 6 last fall. I love it. I decided to give Google Fi a try, since I've been using Google Voice for something like 10 years, and I'm a cheapskate who likes the pay-as-you-used idea. Base is 20$/month for...

Re: Motherboards Should Come with WiFi as Standard Gear

If we went to 10 gigabit ethernet our networks would be more than double the speed of SATA, let alone mechanical HDDs. SATA is 6 Gbps now, and some SSDs come close to saturating that. Come close? My ancient Samsung 830 Pros are limited primarily by SATA3 and overhead. 6Gbps works out to something l...

Re: Motherboards Should Come with WiFi as Standard Gear

No thanks. I've never connected a desktop machine wirelessly and can't see myself doing it anytime soon but I do think we're due for a bump in wired LAN speeds as they are becoming a bit limiting for large file transfers from NAS boxes and things like that. I dunno about that. 10Gbps is getting aff...
