Re: Stupid Bitcoin extortion scams

Yup, my company got hit with the latest bomb threat extortion. Glad our users were smart enough to just report it to I.T. and carry on. Ya our company has integrated a "phishing scam" button into outlook. Some days I feel like clicking it for meeting requests :) oh if anyone is wondering ...

The technical details that were released early did seem a little off and well, too basic.

Re: Chinese Android phones

Pretty sure the active spying on users by the US is more of an issue than active spying of US users by China, unless you work for the US government in the first place. Then you definitely don't want the Chinese government accessing your data. The US problem is (as already mentioned) that you use LT...

Re: Chinese Android phones

Biggest concern I have is that if a phone has not officially been released in North America, it often doesn't have the LTE bands for your carrier. And for me, then, it doesn't matter about spying. It won't even work right in the first place. Check the bands on the tech specs sheets. Oneplus is miss...

Re: Is there a software recovering deleted documents and/ or photos?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is maybe. The longer you have run the system, the more likely the files are gone forever. You can find software that can recover files as when systems delete a file they usually just put a placeholder entry in the file tables that sort of says what was there....

Re: Looking at new laptops - with no idea where to begin

My advice is look at the model year... big box stores like Costco and Best Buy tend to get deals based on stock at the supplier. Meaning that the gem of a deal can be a 2 year old model. It also means that you will be paying more. But it also means you could pick up a high end machine at a cheaper p...

Re: Samsung 960 EVO vs 960 PRO 1 TB

I find it funny that you're considering Samsung for reliability; Samsung and OCZ are the only two names in the SSD business with significant black marks on their record. Go Intel. Seriously. RMA rates speak volumes, and that's cold, hard, empirical data from hardware.fr across hundreds of thousands...

Re: Samsung 960 EVO vs 960 PRO 1 TB

We can all spat out anecdotal evidence of particular drives performing poorly or well. <snip> I think the OP has already answered his/her own question. Get the PRO if you have the money. I've owned 10 SSDs. I have had 2 fail. A 60GB OCZ Indilinx and a 120GB Kingston Pro. The Kingston was retired an...

It does, but it only shows a subset of what Autoruns does.

Take a look at LineageOS supported devices list before you think about that... Not every device has support. I found mine but a buddy who had a 7" of the same generation did not have support. I think a big decider is does the hardware have good CPU and enough RAM that can run the updated Androi...

Resurrecting this post. I never bought due to not finding a tablet I liked. A couple weeks ago I tripped over some details on some updated custom ROMs for the tablet. Hello, I'm one of those guys who still uses SandyBridge based system. I'm actually lucky to have a system that lasted 5+ years and not that lucky because I couldn't afford a 2600k back then and settled with a 2500k. My sample was quite happy on 4.5k GHz with 60ish temps under load (degree celcius)....

I'm rebuilding my old Sandy Bridge system. I only intend to have the IGP for it (my girlfriend will be using it)

Only reason for the rebuild is to wipe the drives and move cases (old case has non-functional front panel USB)

Only other potential issue I can think of is you may get glitches if someone tries to use the other machine at the same time. When the other machine goes "off hook" to look for dial tone you could get some noise on the line, corrupting the transmission. newer models did have "line in...

There's some great stuff in this thread from people that know what they're doing with storage and filesystems, but as someone that does that all day every day I still just recommend people get a simple "dumb NAS" in a 2-bay enclosure of their preferred vendor and just get two disks of the...

Exception is the deduplication. 2GB RAM per 1 TB of storage for the comparasons for deduping. Default is dedupe off. There are extremely few workloads that benefit from deduplication. I don't recommend ANYONE enable it without seriously considering the ramifications and whether they'll even benefit...

I love FreeNAS but almost everything you posted here isn't true. ECC, while recommended, is required no more than with any other filesystem. DRAM requirements aren't governed by space, but by workload - 8 GB will keep almost every NAS file storage user happy, more just helps for non-typical workloa...

Re: Simple HTIB options

Oh, yeah. I've never seen a TV that doesn't truncate down to two channels. The truncate down to 2 channel is due to HDCP. Any time HDMI is communicating without HDCP it truncates to 2.0. If you are concerned with not having more than two audio channels, is there any reason why you wouldn't consider...
