Re: Original Star Wars 4K HDR release (SPECULATION)

... it still amazes me that for about 20 bucks a disc, I can hold an optical media (medium?) in my hand that is essentially as good as most theatrical release prints that would have taken multiple reels/canisters just a few short years ago! You can fit the entire library of 1-8 +Solo +Rogue1 on a m...

Re: Original Star Wars 4K HDR release (SPECULATION)

The more interesting question to me is where the 35mm came from. Last I checked those aren't like picking up Halloween candy, especially one as old and controversial as this, so if I was looking for insider involvement that's where I would start. The only clue I've seen publicly disclosed is that t...

Re: Original Star Wars 4K HDR release (SPECULATION)

Negative 1 claims that they built their own 4K scan rig with a DSLR. It has been done a lot at the hobby level, and so very plausible that someone with video production experience could make a pro grade version. The more interesting question to me is where the 35mm came from. Last I checked those a...

Re: Original Star Wars 4K HDR release (SPECULATION)

If I'm not mistaken, the 35mm print used for the Team Negative 1 1080p scan (a/k/a the Silver Screen Edition) is the same print rescanned for the 4K77 project. That is correct, based on my reading. I'm amazed that they were able to get this done and on such a limited budget. I would love to know wh...

Re: Original Star Wars 4K HDR release (SPECULATION)

A coworker tracked down the 4K non-DNR and the 4K DNR versions of this. We previewed the DNR version this morning on a 4K Samsung 27" monitor, and I am more than pleased with the quality of this. Yes, it's a 4K scan of a "release print," meaning that is a 4th generation analog element...

Re: House struck by lightning

FWIW, while adding lightning protection to a home is "expensive" replacing everything inside of a house is even more so (plus the risk of a damaged appliance setting a fire). I would highly recommend getting lightning protection installed: lightning rods, proper grounding runs on all corn...

My parents had something similar happen several years ago. Dad was out of town on a business trip, which added to the "fun". So, my parents live on a 165ish acre cattle farm that mom's brother owns. Their yard, at the time, had several large red oaks that provided wonderful shade. One afte...

Re: Ticking and Popping Sound

Is there any chance this is just a result of the changes in the Windows audio "stack" in 1803? My old build was still running 1709 since it hadn't received 1803 yet, so it cannot be that. For some reason, it always took upwards of half a year before feature updates would appear on that bu...

Re: Ticking and Popping Sound

Is there any chance this is just a result of the changes in the Windows audio "stack" in 1803? There are a lot of forum posts out there about this. I noticed when I went from 1709 to 1803 if I plug my headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the back of my "monitor" (a 2017 24" 108...

Sorry. When you have Task Manager open and are on the Startup tab, you can right click on any of the tabs (e.g., Name., Publisher, etc.) and it will open a menu. Click on Command Line, then.

Finally got rid of the LG UH8500 and got a Sony X900E. The first thing that annoyed me was the android OS. Nowhere near as many picture setting options as provided by LG. There is no HDR content being played notification. SDR and HDR settings are shared rather than being distinct (really poor choic...

Re: Your favorite brand of coffee?

My go-to is the McCafe (McDonald's) brand sold at Wal-Mart. They sell it in the large canisters, which is an exceptional value compared to the smaller bags. I get the medium roast (red can) and the breakfast blend (yellow can), usually. In addition to having a good flavor, the grind is coarse enough...

Yes, sir, glad to put in a few words of encouragement. I've struggled with "depression" and social anxiety all my life. I've tried everything, legal and "illegal" to medicate/self-medicate it. So, I know what it's like to struggle with addiction and/or unhealthful habits. Sometim...

Re: OK I finally had with binge drinking soda.

Congrats on making it this far. I never could drink diet soft drinks, as the artificial sweeteners, to me, had a horrible aftertaste that would never go away. Also, for some reason, aspartame in particular messes up my heart rhythm (does the same to my mom). A single 12 oz. Diet Coke, for example, m...

Re: Laptop comparable to an XPS 13?

I have an older Asus Zenbook UX305 that is based off the CoreM (Broadwell) series. It's got 8GB of RAM and a 256 SSD. I have to say that it's been a fabulous piece of kit. With that said, it does not have a backlit keyboard, and I've never used it in a "production" environment. I transcode...

Not sure this will help you find an exact model, as it's probably a little too general, but Anand recently put up their updated "best laptops" guide. It might, at least, give you a starting point to narrow down your choices: https://www.anandtech.com/show/9798/best-laptops Ignore the XPS 1...

That looks awesome! I'd love to get into that Dolby Atmos screening room! I've never visited a Dolby Cinema, but from all the reviews I've read on AVS Forums, it's about the best/most immersive theatrical exhibition experience available on the market today. The upcoming release of Blade Runner (The ...

Rtings.com gives the C7 a great review, across the board: http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c7-oled

It scores an 8.8 out of 10 in video game usage. They also mention, specifically, that it upscales 1080p content very well.

We noticed a "shimmering" shadow/reflection thing happening on the sidewalk and pavement out back at work. Sort of like the shadows cast when light bounces off waves in a body of water. I wonder if that was the sun's corona showing up?

I was able to see it from ZIP 37327. Pretty cool, I gotta say. Much darker than I thought it would be. Street lights came on, and all the annual cicadas got REALLY loud the darker it got.

Re: 4K HDR madness

If you want a decent, entry-level TV that supports WCG (wide color gamut) and HDR (at least HDR-10), then consider the Sony X800D (2016 model, VA panel on the 43", IPS on the 49") or the Sony X800E (2017 model, IPS panels across the board). Both sets come in 43' and 49" sizes, feature...

Agreed, I could just get a set of speakers and run the 3.5mm out from the Zenbook to the speakers. I was considering an "all in one" type device for the convenience of having mp3s on a USB drive or MicroSD card and not requiring the Zenbook. Honestly, I'm not trying to be difficult. I've j...

Re: Portable mp3 player/speaker system

I'm not averse to using the Zenbook as the output, as I have a ton of my favorite mp3s on that laptop. However, with that said, a "standalone" type speaker system with either/or/both USB drive input/micro SD input would be fabulous.
