Re: Xbox One X - Display corruption/flickering at 4K fix?

I've never used one so I can't say from personal experience, but you may be able to solve the problem for your preferred cable run by using two (known good) 3m cables and a cheap repeater / extender like this.

Re: Very basic packet sniffing against invader

Yes, the best solution is to ditch XP. If that isn't feasible from a marital peace standpoint, you really need to figure out what is generating the traffic (and Wireshark, mentioned above, is a good way to do that). What AV scanner(s) have you used? If it is infected with multiple malware strains, ...

As far as Chrome with too many tabs goes, I find it's more about memory than CPU. Or have you already installed a tab-suspender extension so that isn't as much of an issue?

Re: Win10 still capable of activating on Win7 keys, apparently...

I just found a still-sealed & shrink-wrapped copy of Windows 8 Pro (retail) that I vaguely remember getting as part of a bundle on NewEgg a few years back. I wonder if I'll be able to use it to activate Windows 10 Pro.

Re: Zen gave 3 and 4 a miss and went straight to 5

From the article chuckula linked: As a side note, manufacturers often skip 4 due to its meaning in Chinese culture. It’s an unlucky number because it’s homophonous to the word ‘death’. Something that AMD surely does not want to be associated with Zen architecture. This is something you learn pretty...

Re: W10/1709, A crash, boot into NEW desktop...?

If you're overclocking / overvolting it's quite possible you're getting data corruption prior to the crash, which could affect things that are written/updated during boot like your profile, the icon cache, etc. Creating those conditions could've had similar results from Windows 7 (or XP or whatever)...

If you can open a command window, you could run the VER command (there's also WINVER but that may not be present in embedded) -- 5.0x will be Win2000, 5.1x will be XP, 6.0x is Vista and 6.1x is Windows 7 (because that's how Microsoft rolls -- there's a full list here ). Odds are pretty good that it ...

Re: Frustrated with light bulbs under microwave!

I bought some dimmable LED T7/E17 type bulbs, 6W and now I think I can see the problem. There is always current being sent to the bulb, so it burns out prematurely. The LED converts that urrent into light so even when the light switch is in the off position, the LED bulb is still glowing. If there ...

One of the times I won was a year when I missed the draft and the autodraft just used the default rankings. It was kind of embarrassing, though of course I did do some in-season managing and roster manipulation. One positive about having relatively few teams in the league is that a lot of good playe...

I think there's a kind of penetrating oil that has an effect on Loctite; at least, I recall somebody telling me that once. You'd definitely want to make sure it's a non-conductive penetrating oil (that stuff tends to find its way everywhere).

You know they've been around for a while, right? The one at UVillage here amuses me because (a) it's exactly across from the Apple store, and (b) they put the VR tryout area right in the front. So you can stand in the Apple store and watch be-headsetted newbs fail around while immersed in XBox.

Re: Better to throw exceptions or return null?

The discussion of checked exceptions in Wikipedia might be worth a read. That's a particular kind of exception that Java provides, and few other languages do (and some that did got rid of it) -- an aspect of coding-by-contract that sounded good in theory but ended up being a pain in practice. Kiniry...

It's been a while since I had to deal with an HP product but IIRC their support page will identify your HP device and offer to download the latest drivers if you don't already have them. Re: Let's take a look at the VP9 decoding performance of 19 different processors!

-1080p @ 60 fps actually seems to be a little more demanding than 1440p @ 30. It is. 2560x1440@ 30 fps is ~110 MPixels per second 1920x1080@ 60 fps is ~124 MPixels per second It's exactly 12.5% more pixels to push, so a CPU that is running at 90% doing the former is going to be trying to push past ...

Baby wipes make quick work of dirty fans for future reference. While I don't doubt they do a good job of removing the dust, won't the moisturizers leave a residue which will tend to trap new dust in the future? I'd use a Swiffer sheet, or equivalent, if handy -- after all, collecting dust is what t...

So out of curiosity, what was your chosen solution -- a thread-safe replacement for ctime, or locks around the call?
