Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

The end. if only, my friend I think we're done here. One can hope we are, anyway ;) I upset Glorious by stating that the dispute between him and Krogoth was of no value. I did not mean of no value whatsoever , I meant, of no value to the thread, since it's off-topic and unrelated to the Meerkt's qu...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Would there be value in a lower spindle speed drive? Would that allow for more density? For my NAS Drives, anything faster than gigabit is a waste. I'd much rather trade that for higher density, lower cost, or higher reliability. Most 2.5" were ~3900-7200rpm while the 3.5" were ~5400-10,0...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

I mean, I'm totally baffled, because I just posted a whole series of high-quality reviews that demonstrate, EMPIRICALLY, that Western Digital did EXACTLY THAT between the years of 2003 and 2012. You, however, ignore all that while chastising me and say that they "never" managed to do that...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

This has become a willy-waving contest that's of no value whatsoever. Manufacturers never managed to get linear sequential transfer rate improvements with spindle-speed increases. It's just harder to do for all kinds of reasons that we don't really know for sure and have become totally irrelevant si...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Increasing RPM has little impact on I/O throughput. It is far more depended on areal density. 10K+ RPM HDDs are forced to use smaller, less dense platters which is why their STR performance has been on par with mainstream 7200RPM units for years. The main advantage of 10K+ HDDs is their access spee...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

The problem is that increased RPM doesn't translate linearly to more performance. Higher RPM drives typically have lower areal density so whilst the lifespan/power/noise increases are linear (or even exponentially worse) with increased RPM, the performance gains are less than linear. In theory a 720...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

Another sad aspect is how Seagate and WDC decided to transform mainstream into 5400 rpm, instead of the 7200 rpm it used to be. And that's compounded when the average capacities and data sizes continue to grow. At least Toshiba doesn't play this game. I, for one, am pleased that 'mainstream' speeds...

Re: Temporary gfx card suggestions

Very little is known about Navi, and Nvidia have dealt their cards for the next 12-18 months so don't expect anything to change there, given that Navi will likely compete with, rather than undercut, the existing market. With that in mind, I would question how temporary your graphics card is going to...

Re: Blackblaze's 2018 HDD stats

WD will ruin HGST, mark my words. WD themselves have seemingly lost all quality control and are now on my avoid list for mechanical drives. I have seen countless failed WD greens brought into me in the last three years and my own reason for ditching them at home (WD Reds) correlates with an increase...

I'm catching up with Brooklyn Nine-nine, that show is gold - a bit like Scrubs was, and BBC's Coupling. I can also recommend a three-hour binge-watch of Netflix's recent Love, Death, & Robots; It's an anthology of short stories that is a mix of amazing and okay episodes in 5-15 minute chunks. Ev...

Oh man, I forgot how much fun we had with AVP as well.
AVP2 was more stable, from a networking point of view, and the multiplayer was better fleshed out too.

I have a WD Green 240GB M.2 SATA SSD sitting in my drawer that refuses to work properly with some motherboards. I don't know what WD have done but it's impressively awful that they've somehow managed to screw up compatibility on a SATA device . That's been a standard for almost a decade now, and a c...

Re: Recommandations for DIY NAS HDDs

I've been avoiding WD for consumer drives for a while now. QC seems to have gone out the window - visible in my own limited experience, newegg reviews, Revoo reviews (cross-retailer European review engine used by hundreds of e-tailers) and of course Backblaze's study. Pre-WD HGST are still worth hun...

XFR has been provent to be almost as effective as a manual overclock, so save the $200 on a new board, just set XFR and forget about it, and then dump the $200 into a faster GPU or faster DDR4.

Does it have dust filters, and are you planning on using the 3.5" drive cage? On the assumption that it doesn't have dust filters, and that the front panel's intake is pretty restricted (looks like two slits on the side and one gash in the front) I would put at least two intakes into the front,...

Re: Phoenix Point goes Epic-exclusive after Fig crowdfunding based on Steam/GOG

Bait and switch. You're right to be pissed and boycott them. You can't promise A to get funding and then deliver B once you have the money - that's breach of contract, even if in the case of crowdfunding it's only an implied contract. I don't understand the need to tie yourself to a store and give t...

Re: New Ryzen 3 2200G build - random freezes/pauses

If it proceeds to work fine after the pauses, I don't think it's hardware related. That sounds like some piece of software is trying to do something and won't let the system do anything else until it either completes or times out. Possibly some app is trying to phone home? The event viewer would be...

I would go with the Asus or Alienware. Sometimes you get to keep the mouse. If that's the case, then it's a win-win. You get a new mouse and you get to tinker with Omron switches on the dead one!

Re: PC Issue - turning off after startup

BIOS battery is a good one I'd forgotten about. If your PC has spent a lot of time powered off in the last few years, that's quite likely. Another culprit for this is if it happens after a BIOS update or graphics card change - The motherboard can't successfully UEFI boot so it gives up, reboots and ...

It isn't like I don't hear of other mice failing, it's more like the portion of failure reports that involve switches is far higher for Logitech. There are still a bunch of other possible factors outside the switch type. Is their debounce still intolerant of some particular kind of switch wear? Do ...

Re: Optical mouse with REALLY sturdy switches and decent DPI/polling rate?

Logi does use Omron, but I assumed some different variant - I do hear a whole lot more reports of Logi switches dying than on other brands, even since the debounce has been purportedly sorted out. Well, Logitech gaming mice outsell the grand total of every other gaming mouse brand except Razer comb...
