The, the repair tool would do nothing but make windows work, all my 3rd party apps would still need to be reinstalled, and that's the real pain.

Anyway

I've reformatted the drive with a 1gb partition as a spaceholder and windows installed on the second partition.

It's booting fine now, it'll do until I find myself an mATX board and get everything set up properly.

No, none of those things are the problem

If boot.ini or the MBR wasn't set up right, it wouldnt get half way into windows :roll:

Booting from a CD will be tricky :P

Looks like Im gonna have to unplug it and drag it inside if what Im trying now doesnt work.

Im gonna copy everything to my desktop, reformat with a dummy partition (10mb or something), and copy it all back

It was always a single drive

The drive I was using before had two partitions, windows was installed on the second.


The computer boots, XP loads, but freezes on the Welcome screen.

Even after unclicking the 'Hacktools' option in Nortons config, its still automatically deleting the file Im lucky it hasnt noticed it in the original zip or I'd lose it forever (the original webpage I got it from has been taken down) I have to actually disable norton if I want to do anything at all...

Also might want to check the event log. The pop-ups warnings in the systray usually show up there too. (run -> eventvwr.msc) Checked in the event log, Ive got lots of warnings and errors, but nothing that corrosponds to this thing. Humour us, what are the errors? Some viaraid errors, some old cdrom...
