I disagree, I know some people who really don't listen to music at all. However, I don't know anyone who doesn't use language every day, unless they're mute, and even then they can use sign language.

However for me, I would have a hard time without music.

Let's turn this around. Ask yourself what the world would be like if we only had music, and no language.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

i bet those ppl u mention that dont listen to music have listened to it or
listen to it when they go to events naturally in life. music cant be avoided
anywhere. unless you dont go to company parties, weddings, graduation
parties, retirement parties, birthday parties, and so on. you get the picture.

you must be running out of material to use, cuz what you ask doesnt make
sense. music without language is like paper without pencil. a car without
gas, mt dew without the caffeine, sex without intercourse, and so on...

They may encounter music but they don't seek it out and certainly don't appreciate it.

WHAT? WHAT?

Ok, I'm not going to pretend I understood that because I don't. What exactly are you trying to say, that back in the roman days there was no language? And when exactly are these classical times?

Music is not life, not on a biological or cultural level. Stop talking crap.

And why on earth should I ask myself if life would be better if there was only language, that whole question is wrong on so many levels.

no yer misinterpreting my posts...

back then, when the romans were, they loved music and it was a big
part of their culture.

classical times is the era of beethoven, bach, mozart,
ravi shanker, chopin, and more...

1)Spineshank (heavy industiral metal) "Malnutrition" or "Violent moodswings"
2)Ill Nino (spanish/american metal) "If you still hate me" or "no murder"
3)Breaking Benjamin (rock/hard rock) "shallow bay" or "polyamerous"
4)The Used "Choke me" or "Taste of ink"

The louder, heavier, and more furious it is, the more I like it :D Rock on!

Ok.

For the first 17 years of my life I didn't really like music at all, it is only in the past year that I have started listening to music regularly. And I don't like much new stuff.

So according to you, instrumental music is meaningless? Music without vocals is independent of language. Unless you consider music itself (irrespective of whether it has words or not) to be a form of language... then I might agree with you.

Umm... I must be completely missing the point of what you're trying to say then, because the above two statements appear to be contradictory.

Well, not to get involved in the philosophical discussion that's going on regarding music being life, I definitely rely on music. Though it seems we've had this topic come up before, I listen to all kindsa of stuff:

Dave Matthews Band
Fiona Apple
Zwan/Smashing Pumpkins
Jack Johnson
Ben Folds Five
Incubus
Tori Amos
Beck
Filter
Chemical Bros

others

And stuff from what TheGleek called "classical times." You know, Baroque, Classical, Romantic; heck even Comtemporary stuff, if it's not too New Age.
<font size=2>Hobbes: "Whatcha doin?"
Calvin: "I'm killing time while I wait for life to shower me with meaning and happiness."
Hobbes:  "I hope you're comfy."
Calvin: "You could get me something to eat."</font>

Let's turn this around. Ask yourself what the world would be like if we only had music, and no language.

Oh no .. everybody would start to sing :p
