Got the surrounds from 'Simply Speakers' and watched their videos for the large advent woofers and then for the Reference 4 woofers. Cleaned off the rims of the speakers and the cones with acetone and isopropyl alcohol and have got the insides of the surrounds attached to the cones. Gonna use the 50Hz method to center the voice coils while glueing the outside of the surrounds to the speaker frames.

Found a perfect replacement mirror on Car-Part.com and ordered it at a total cost of $175 and installed it myself in about 20 minutes. Saved us over $1000 and made the wife happy cause now the key fobs work. Win-Win
Waco wrote:I did both pairs of 8" and 4" speakers last night using the ProAudio tone generator recommended in the video. It had a preset for 55Hz; which is what I used. I maybe had the volume turned down too low. The 880 440 220 and 110 were audible but low volume. I did not realize my phone volume was automatically turned down by the app to about 10%. But I had my amp at 50%. So, I'm torn, did I need more volume to tug the edges of the cone into the right shape? Or did I actually do good by having it barely audible at 55Hz with minimal excursions and tugging of the edges? Well, I heard no scraping. So, I think I succeeded. They have dried overnight. I'll let them dry all day today and then try them out tonight.Mr Bill wrote:I'm in the process of replacing the surrounds on both 8-inch and 4-inch speakers from a pair of Infinity Reference Four's that I got for $30. I use lower frequencies to center drivers - 10-20 Hz if you can get your amp to play that low. Many many drivers repaired over the years, no failures. It takes a lot less power to get good movement out of them and you don't have to listen to anything humming so it's easier to hear rubbing.
Those speakers are a steal at $30, even if they need repaired!
Waco wrote:Hooked them up a gave them a listen last night. I played 'Kashmir' and 'I'm So Afraid' with the Reference 4, then the big Advents, then with both. I think its a victory! The Reference 4's are a little brighter on the high end. The Advents bring out the finger strokes of the base and even the lead guitars. Together they work pretty well but the Reference 4's are about 20-30% more volume for the same setting. The big Advents seem to need more power for the same volume. You should be okay if you saw some movement of the cones and didn't hear any scraping. You're really only getting some movement to center the driver in the field gap and get the surround into the right place.
Mr Bill wrote:Any suggestions for balancing the volumes? My 1980's era 50W dual toroid Proton amp does not have separate volume controls for the A/B speakers.
Waco wrote:Yeah, I'd really like to have another pair of the big Advent's that I bought in the mid 70's. I had to replace the woofers around 1989 and then again this year. I bought the replacement 10" woofers from Amazon. So, I have two Advent woofers to fix up next I guess. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a couple of the old advents for cheap with blown woofers and good tweeters.Yeah, it's pretty hard to gain-match differing systems. Your best best would be to drive two amplifiers with separate gain controls, but in general, mixing speakers is somewhat of a crapshoot. If you can avoid it, I would.

Waco wrote:Actually, I do not recall what the original woofers looked like. That was back around 1989 when the surrounds rotted out one day. However, I got the replacements directly from Advent. I sent them the old woofers and got these (which rotted out one at a time late 2016 and early 2017). I don't think the originals had that weird wooden inverted surround. The woofers screw directly in to four holes in the front. The ones I have now have a square-ish frame but large round magnets. So, if the originals had the square magnets; they are gone now.Oh cool, those are the originals! Square magnet and inverted surround on the original woofer?
