It wasn't today, but it was a few weeks ago.

2010 BMW 335i Convertible.

Had a weird noise from the rear, and kept losing air pressure in right rear tire. Went to BMW specialist shop (not a BMW dealer). They said I needed 2 rear tires and one rim was bent and needed to be repaired. The price was excellent, so I said go ahead and do it. Picked up the car and neither of my key fobs would work at all. Of course all the shop did was replace 2 tires and had a rim fixed. They kept it for 3 days trying to figure it out. Re-installed all the software on the computer as well. Finally gave up and suggested the BMW dealer. Dealer said I needed a new rear view mirror. I said "Whachu talking bout Willis?!?? So apparently the transceiver for the key fobs is inside the mirror, and the replacement mirror is over $1,200 (including installation). Yikes!!! Found a perfect replacement mirror on Car-Part.com and ordered it at a total cost of $175 and installed it myself in about 20 minutes. Saved us over $1000 and made the wife happy cause now the key fobs work. Win-Win :)

Huh. Well, I learned something new today. Weird.

Our wooden backyard fence has a double gate that has been warping the last couple of years. The runoff from the rain is building up dirt on the uphill side and pushing the gate out of true. I dug out the channels for the gate and re-aligned the latches. Time will tell if they straighten out at this point.

I repaired a broken SATA connector on a hard drive.
My son had broken the plastic tab on the data connector.

The drive was a 5TB Toshiba. I found an old Seagate drive that had a connector that had a surface mount connection on the correct side of the board and gave it a go.
If I'd been paying attention, it could have been a fairly easy repair. But, I accidently lifted a small surface mount capacitor. Then while going to reposition it, I squeezed my tweezers too hard and sent the component flying to an unknown location. I ended up harvesting one from that Seagate board and using it as well.

The good news is that it works. The connector won't be physically strong as it doesn't have mounting holes in the correct location. I'll have to be careful in the future if I need to change cabling. I may add some hot glue to reinforce the connector.

I posted a dozen images with more detailed descriptions here:

I did NOT repair my LG G4. The wireless charging has gone wonky, and a new wireless charging antenna (the potential cheap fix) did not help. Percussive maintenance brings it back for a few minutes, but then it cuts out again. Given the symptoms, I'm guessing there's a bad solder joint somewhere in the charging circuitry.

At least it'll still take a charge via the USB jack, so it's not dead in the water.

Not today, but in the last week:

Replaced the master cylinder on the project car.
Replaced all the calipers on the project car.
*Almost* got the fuel tank mounted and plumbed on the project car...but decided to cut it short and contemplate buying a fuel cell.

I'm in the process of replacing the surrounds on both 8-inch and 4-inch speakers from a pair of Infinity Reference Four's that I got for $30. I hope its worth it. Got the surrounds from 'Simply Speakers' and watched their videos for the large advent woofers and then for the Reference 4 woofers. Cleaned off the rims of the speakers and the cones with acetone and isopropyl alcohol and have got the insides of the surrounds attached to the cones. Gonna use the 50Hz method to center the voice coils while glueing the outside of the surrounds to the speaker frames.

Should be. I still have a pair of Reference Ones that I refoamed a few years ago. Among the best bookshelf speakers I've owned; that entire line was from the end of Infinity's golden years.

So, I bought a Dual Shock 3 to use as a PC controller(There are advantages to using it compared to an Xinput based controller). It began to have problems a few days after I got it. I figured out a software solution(Basically just restarting the service allowing it to function on my PC). Then it just nearly died, being capable of doing nearly nothing.

After that, I began to investigate via Google. I found some info suggesting it was a fake, but the model number seemed to match as well as it looks like a real controller in general.

Then I took it apart and compared to an article describing how to take it apart.

The internals were reversed, and the battery looked completely different. I then compared the back of the controller with pictures on the net, and the sticker on the back with the model number and such was completely different. I could have used a real controller to compare as I have one, but it was hard to reach at that moment(I am crippled, and movement is hard) in time. I then compared the box, which I hadn't tossed quite yet, and the damned thing had just one thing wrong with it compared to the real thing. It didn't list the color.

I have suspicions as to the exact cause. I think it was poor soldering, but I didn't go far enough to check due to not having the equipment or proper knowledge to fix it. My dad has a soldering iron, but I don't think the tip is of the right size, and I know he's out of solder.

This wasn't my first go around attempting a controller repair(Or a console one either. I have/had a PS2 with a malfunctioning disc drive, and found that cleaning the lens as well as what I think is a ribbon cable[Don't ask, I don't know why] fixed it for a short time), so I'm a bit humbled by my inability to fix it.

Incidentally, the model number was only off by two left off digits. If y'all want to buy a dual shock 3 , and the info says the model number is CECHZC2U instead of CECHZC2UA1/CECHZC2U A1(Sometimes they're referred to separately), you'll know it's a fake.

In addition, there's some bad information on the net saying that fake and others can be told apart by the controller is hooked up/player 1 etc lights shining through the plastic. My official PS3 CECHZC2U A1 controller, which came inside of my PS3 console(A God of War Ascension bundle), has the same issue. Apparently, it's just endemic to later PS3 controllers. Thinner plastic issue, as far as I can tell.

Luckily, a super generous friend of mine gave me some cash and I bought a Dual Shock 4 from Best Buy to insure it was not a fake. Had a slight bit of trouble setting it up in Steam(Seems like it was PEBKAC), but it is otherwise completely fine. It even fits my hands better than any prior Dual Shock!

I use lower frequencies to center drivers - 10-20 Hz if you can get your amp to play that low. Many many drivers repaired over the years, no failures. It takes a lot less power to get good movement out of them and you don't have to listen to anything humming so it's easier to hear rubbing.

Those speakers are a steal at $30, even if they need repaired!

That's crazy...would never have occurred to me. But it makes perfect sense from a reception standpoint. Also makes me appreciate having an old car. :D

I repaired the rear-view mirror in my car last week. After 20 years it wasn't a huge surprise to find it dangling by the power cord one morning. Auto-shop had a button adhesive kit, tried it and let it sit for 24 hours (supposed to be mountable after 1-hour) but the stuff only partially cured and popped off as I was remounting the mirror.

Swung by a mechanics forum and found out half of the two-compound epoxy kits that one mixes before application are just as good and much less hassle for the same cost. Just be sure to get one rated above 150F, many of the kits are rated only to 120F. Lowes has one Devcon kit rated for ~200F and sun exposure. The stuff smells truly awful though!

I did both pairs of 8" and 4" speakers last night using the ProAudio tone generator recommended in the video. It had a preset for 55Hz; which is what I used. I maybe had the volume turned down too low. The 880 440 220 and 110 were audible but low volume. I did not realize my phone volume was automatically turned down by the app to about 10%. But I had my amp at 50%. So, I'm torn, did I need more volume to tug the edges of the cone into the right shape? Or did I actually do good by having it barely audible at 55Hz with minimal excursions and tugging of the edges? Well, I heard no scraping. So, I think I succeeded. They have dried overnight. I'll let them dry all day today and then try them out tonight.

I am wondering how they will sound paired with the two large Advents that I have had since the 1970's.

You should be okay if you saw some movement of the cones and didn't hear any scraping. You're really only getting some movement to center the driver in the field gap and get the surround into the right place.

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Thu May 04, 2017 9:38 am

Took the lawn mower (MTD Craftsman T1600) out of it's winter holding cell and changed the oil/cleaned it, etc, then got it prepped to mow and roll the lawn. As I'm mowing (while towing the ~900lb roller) I notice that it seems to be driving slower than what it should be. My foot is nearly to the floor (variable speed transmission), but it's only going like 1/4 speed. I assume the tires are spinning (the tractor is pretty night, relying mostly on the driver for rear ballast), and both wheels are firmly planted. Just as I put two-and-two together, I notice the smell of hot belt.

This mower has a goofy variable ratio belt drive and sure enough the belt has loosened up enough that it can't take the torque of pulling the huge roller. So I think to myself "that should be an easy fix, just have to scoot the idler pulley out a little to re-tension the belt and it will be running again in no time". Turns out the belt tension in this mower actually controls the speed, so there are no tension adjustments to account for belt stretch, just ones that change the pedal position vs drive ratio alignment.

So I set out to replace both drive belts: a large one that goes from engine to variable diameter pulley via the pedal, and a smaller one that goes from the variable diameter pulley to the drive pulley on the rear axle. This, of course, requires removing the body panel on the rear of the tractor, which requires removing the seat and the battery, as well as all the control levers. Sigh.

I finally get the large belt replaced after much cursing and consulting the service manual when I realize the smaller belt is retained by the rear frame, instead of a dedicated belt guide. Sure enough, the service manual starts the rear belt removal procedure with 'remove the transaxle from the frame'. Yeah, not today. I reassemble everything and hope that it helps enough replacing the large belt, and go back to mowing/rolling, and it's improved significantly, but still slips a little under heavy load, but I call it good enough and finish up for the weekend.

Next week comes around (it rained for over a week) and I go out to mow/roll again (the yard is really rough as it never got any attention until I moved in) and of course the grass is like a foot tall. And now the belt driving the mower deck is slipping too.

Sigh. Time to spend another evening disassembling the mower again.

Cub Cadet/John Deere shaft drive. On my side hill, Craftsman/MTD belt-drive mowers lasted 3 years tops. Current Cub is 10 years old and still works fine.

Yeah I'm in a tricky place with this mower, I just bought it 2-3 years ago, but a year ago I moved to a place with a much bigger/more complicated yard. So now I'm wishing I had sprung for a larger zero-turn model.

Hooked them up a gave them a listen last night. I played 'Kashmir' and 'I'm So Afraid' with the Reference 4, then the big Advents, then with both. I think its a victory! The Reference 4's are a little brighter on the high end. The Advents bring out the finger strokes of the base and even the lead guitars. Together they work pretty well but the Reference 4's are about 20-30% more volume for the same setting. The big Advents seem to need more power for the same volume.

Any suggestions for balancing the volumes? My 1980's era Proton D540 amp does not have separate volume controls for the A/B speakers.

Edit for amp model. Its 40W, don't know why I thought it was a 50W amp. But it has great headroom.:D

Simply not going to happen without you building passive attenuators using high-quality potentiometers to place in the feed of the louder speakers. My guess is that the Infinitys are more sensitive, have a lower impedance, or both, than the Advents.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to gain-match differing systems. Your best best would be to drive two amplifiers with separate gain controls, but in general, mixing speakers is somewhat of a crapshoot. If you can avoid it, I would.

Yeah, I'd really like to have another pair of the big Advent's that I bought in the mid 70's. I had to replace the woofers around 1989 and then again this year. I bought the replacement 10" woofers from Amazon. So, I have two Advent woofers to fix up next I guess. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a couple of the old advents for cheap with blown woofers and good tweeters.

The old ones with the funny looking dustcap?

I have a set of Advent Heritage towers that I reconditioned, they're still utterly amazing speakers. It's too bad they got bought out by Jensen and ruined. :(

EDIT: Watch this page for interesting old speakers for sale: http://www.oaktreevintage.com/Stereo_Speakers.htm Perhaps a pair of what you're looking for might pop up! They're pretty ludicrously expensive though.

This reminds me I have a set of Cerwin Vega DX3s to refurbish still...

Mine look like these. Advent Loudspeaker circa 1974 In particular the straight rather than rounded beveled edges on the front. Looks like the woofers in these are bogus. But the tweeters are exactly what I have. If the tweeters and crossovers are good I could swap in my original woofers after replacing the surrounds.

Actually, I do not recall what the original woofers looked like. That was back around 1989 when the surrounds rotted out one day. However, I got the replacements directly from Advent. I sent them the old woofers and got these (which rotted out one at a time late 2016 and early 2017). I don't think the originals had that weird wooden inverted surround. The woofers screw directly in to four holes in the front. The ones I have now have a square-ish frame but large round magnets. So, if the originals had the square magnets; they are gone now.

The joys of owning a 19yo car: replace an instrument cluster lamp, replace e-brake indicator switch, and lubricate the spring cartridge for the the driver's seat belt. Three minor items, three different interior trim panels to disassemble.

Yeah, I like to think of it as buying a new car a piece at a time plus sweat equity. Although I often find myself muttering, "I'm getting to old for this sh1t."

Reminds me of one my favorite Johnny Cash songs "One Piece at a Time" and his psycho-billy cadillac

Too bad insurance companies do not use maintenence records to adjust the value of a car.

I got the swamp cooler going for another year. Soon now, I will have to replace that rusty bottomed devil. But hopefully not this year. I replaced my mailbox after the door of the old one fell off. Got me thinking about replacing the one at my business. The mail boxes are along a fairly heavy traffic three lane highway. I am going to get the Oasis 360 from Lowe's because it will keep small parcels somewhat more secure and it can be opened from the sidewalk side rather than having to lean into traffic (and in winter, step in the slush).
