Thread title modded to reflect date.

Unfortunately, work conspires to deny my attendance this year. I have to be in DC until late that Friday and the flight schedules just don't work. I'll gladly turn on my lappy's webcam and interact, though.

Right, like did you reserve the grill. Inquiring cooks want to know.

We're all booked for the fancy grill trailer with the smoker and flame thrower. :o

Also, I can't help myself, here's a teaser for the fundraiser this year:

Well, if I happen to win PowerBall/MegaMillions in the meantime I'll use my NetJets share to get me there. I could probably even get the potato gun on a NetJets flight.

It is illegal to ship alcohol via the Post Office. It is not illegal to ship alcohol via a commercial carrier like UPS, but it is technically against their rules unless you're licensed to ship alcohol. Carrier rules notwithstanding, homebrew compeitition entrants use UPS and FedEx to ship their entries all the time. There's really no other alternative unless you happen to live near the judging site for the competition you're entering.

Just make sure there's enough padding that the cans won't get crushed if the package is subjected to typical UPS/FedEx abuse. For bottles we also recommend an inner plastic liner (e.g. double-bagged in plastic garbage bags), but IMO that's overkill for cans since the chance of breakage is lower.

Amusing side note: A couple of years back we had an entrant in the American Homebrewers Association competition who had his package returned by UPS, looking like it had been run over by a truck... there was literally a tire mark up the middle of it! All the bottles were broken, of course.

OK. Looks like I'll get in the Heady line about 3 weeks before BBQ. Heady is packed in 6 4-packs to the case, so I'll take one for the effort, JBI gets one for the real work, and the rest will be for those who can get there.

I've spent hours on Kayak and the like, but given my earliest-possible departure from DC it just won't work. Ugh.

Fun fact: I used to work for UPS at an airport hub! Based on my 9 months of experience, the tire mark/damage was more likely from one of the bumper tires along parts of the conveyor belts. Sometimes too many packages get jammed on the belt, boxes get smushed against those tires, and then forced along anyhow by the flow of the other packages... It is also possible that fell out of a truck and no one noticed, and another backed in over it, etc. Teeechnically, you're supposed to check after each vehicle has pulled away :P The hub I worked at expected at least 2000 packages a night, to be unloaded by one to three people in less than an hour... There's not time to be completely gentle, or watch the belt/jump down from a semi in time to catch things. For best results, aim for for your package to be shipped during the middle of the week. Fridays are hell for getting Saturday deliveries through too, and Mondays make up for factories not being able to ship over the weekend :)

Re: TR BBQ "2nd-10th" - Official Thread - July 23, 2016

Last year's addition of a fundraiser based on shirts was a pretty big success so I'm happy to announce that we are going to do it again this year! Of course, it wouldn't be the TR BBQ if we didn't ramp it up a notch or two so this year we are doing team jerseys for the fictional Tech Report Thorough Gerbils! I hope there are at least some 30 Rock fans that will get the joke... Exactly what manner of team the Thorough Gerbils are is a mystery so whether you are a fan of sports, e-sports, robotic competitions, CCGs, or something else entirely you can claim the team as your own.

As jerseys, it wouldn't be right if everyone on the team had the same one so we've got customizations to choose from! Obviously, you need to be able to get the right size but you can also pick a custom name and number to go on the back as well as your choice of four different colors for the accent color in the logo itself (shown below). Sizes of this style shirt run all the way from youth small up to adult 4XL. I'm not going to put a hard character limit on your name or number so there is some room for creativity but don't go crazy and I reserve the right to shut down anyone trying to make their number the first 100 digits of Pi. ;) That said, "π" itself would be an option, we're not beholden to the traditional jersey rules so you can be creative, just not obnoxious. :P

One-of-a-kind heat-pressed multi-colored jerseys do cost more than the silk screened cotton t-shirts from last year and this is a fundraiser after all so the donation levels required to get a shirt have gone up a bit. I'm hoping that giving more notice this year will offset the increase in expense. I'm also offering significantly lower cost reward tiers for families that buy multiple shirts; here's my plan:

Image - $75 if you want just one shirt
Image - $62.50 each if you want two shirts
Image - $50 each if you want three or more shirts

Here's what they look like:
Image
Accent color choices:
Image

We can't have duplicate numbers on the team so numbers on the back of the shirt are first come first serve. You can lock up your shirt choice by using the donation buttons above, be sure to specify size, name, number, and color for each shirt. I will add the details about everyone getting shirts to the first post in this thread so everyone will know what numbers are already taken and so donors can confirm I have their reward correct.

Two more things... First is that there will probably be a matching baseball cap as a lower cost option/add-on but the design for it isn't quite finished yet, it's a one size fits all deal and I'm not sure if the multiple accent colors will be an option because we may decide to have it embroidered instead of heat-pressed and that changes the rules a bit when it comes to flexibility and cost. Second is that since this shirt isn't specific to this particular BBQ year I'm opening up donations not just to this year's attendees but also past attendees as well (consider shipping as included). I'm not going to make a big fuss out of that part so this is the only place you will see me mention it.

I'm really hoping to make a big impact with the shirts this year, there is so much more stuff I want to do to make the BBQ even more awesome but even covering more of the core cost would be great. I don't want to spoil all of the new plans but just a few things on the short list to add this year are a cotton candy machine, a new router/wifi extender, and maybe a remotely drivable IP camera robot.

I hope you love the shirts as much as I do, many thanks to sis_of_fish for the design! :)

I guess we are on "maybe" now.

Something came up that starts in the am.
We have been rasing chickens for eggs and meat, and now mini-lop bunnies as well.

We are going to a small animal sale that morning to sell both of them.
I wish to see things not as they are but as they should be.

Are there tall sizes? My biggest issue is finding those...when they aren't, I have to order sizes large enough they're like tents...and they're still too short.

Note to Just Brew It!: Can you bring some more items from Revolution Brewing this year? I keep hearing great things (like they have a good Scotch Ale), and that Eugene Porter from last year was excellent. It isn't available here. I'm sure we can find options that you don't get to make it worth your while. :D

I can certainly do that. A lot of their styles are seasonals though, so it depends on what's available. I'll watch for the Scotch Ale and grab some if I see it.
