Actually looked at my July schedule and things might change for me. The training gig in Arlington, VA actually starts the Monday after BBQ (I had thought it was the week before). Google Maps tells me it's 680 miles and 10 hours from Holland, MI to Arlington, VA and, if that's close to right, I could do it assuming an early rise on Sunday. The only sticky part is that I wouldn't be able to bring the potato gun. The Arlington facility is Federal property and just to get into the garage you get a full car search including the wheeled mirrors to look underneath the car. There's no way in hell I'm trying to get into that garage with the cannon in the back, as I simply can't do life in Gitmo. I do not do well in humid climates.

Ponderance commences.

That's great news! I'll try to compensate for the missing potato cannon somehow...

If I'm really lucky, when I call Monday to make a reservation at the Arlington facility, they'll be full. That puts me in a commercial hotel and means the cannon comes with me.

This is all still tentative, though.

I'm not far from Arlington at all (15 minutes?) so while I cannot come to the BBQ I can store it for you while you are the conference (could meet somewhere Sunday, pick it up, store it, and then get it back to you before you get back on the road).

That's an option I'll keep in the pocket until I figure out if the Arlington facility even has availability when I need to be there.

Thanks for the offer.

LOL, yeah, better to have a fellow gerbil take it off your hands than put it in a self-storage locker.

Of course, if the trunk exchange goes down you'll still need to watch out for the po-po.

Still have a fraternity bro living in NoVa, his wife was part of the house crowd back in the day, and I used to hook up with them when I was allowed to drive to DC instead of flying (damn budget hawks). I'm sure I could leave it all in his garage for a few days.

And no, this is not Arlington Road and I am not Tim Robbins (or Jeff Bridges).

EDIT: I have taken "defensive" hotel reservations for the trip out to Holland from home.

I seem to recall that character lost everything TWICE during that movie. You should abandon this charade while you still can.

Anyone have a problem of me posting pics/videos from some of the earlier BBQs in this thread? :)

So one of many crazy things that happened to me with week while I've been at SVVR deserves sharing in this thread. I happened across a public cornhole play area in a park and played a game with my friend Aaron. The first 4 bags I threw, the first time I've played this year, and the first time ever using that set - well, they were all perfect swishes! :o I still can't believe it. I've only ever gotten 3 in a row before but some of those slid in. It was just awesome to sink 4 of them perfectly! I really impressed at least one onlooker before returning to my normal abilities. I did win the match 21-5 though.

Here's a proof of the matching hat to go with the shirt. It will be embroidered and available in colors that match the shirts. I haven't figured out the donation amount it will go with yet, though.

So I need a bit of help/advice picking a camera or two for streaming the BBQ this year. Last year's crazy 6-camera setup was fun and effective but the picture quality left something to be desired and it was high maintenance.

I would like to do one or both of these items this year - in either case assume I have much better WiFi coverage than previously - including, at last, all the way down to the beach.

1) A stationary 360º camera that live streams to an online service that allows viewers to pan around the scene individually instead of everyone fighting over the same PTZ control. Strongly considering the Ricoh Theta S because I know it can stream to YouTube and I saw a lot of them at SVVR.
2) A mobile water-proof action camera, high picture quality, something I can stream over WiFi and that ideally has a replaceable battery so it can be used all day. If it doesn't natively support RTSP or something I can capture in Xsplit - then I need to at least be able to screen capture its output and re-encode it. In this case when I say over WiFi I don't mean a short-range-to-an-app-running-on-a-nearby-phone, I mean connected to a proper wireless network and streamed to any device on that network - like how I've used my IP cameras in past years.

Thoughts?

Man, it's harder than it sounds to live-stream to the web from a GoPro. At least the way I want to do it anyway. Since the GoPro's WiFi is only AP mode you can't connect it to an existing network, that sucks. It also sounds like the quality of the stream that goes out over WiFi is much less than the recorded quality too. I might have to go back to the IP camera plan and just find a decent waterproof enclosure to put the camera and a battery pack in.

If you find a mobile "action" cam you may be able to persuade someone into using it as a grilling cam(at least for the early part of the day). I bet it would make for a great shot of me utilizing the flame thrower to light charcoal. :D

I had an "ah ha!" moment and realized that there must be apps that turn your phone into an IP camera. There are. Problem solved, no tiny IP camera necessary. Should have some amusing pics to post this weekend...
