New family member

No, we didn't have a baby... we're beyond that now. But we did adopt someone:

Shelter said Corgie/Collie mix... we're thinking maybe Corgie/Aussie something. Either way, she's adorable.

She likes hugs.

Funny thing is, she was shy and stand-offish at the shelter; but we still felt like we connected at some level. We looked at a lot of other dogs at several other shelters, but eventually circled back around to her.

When we got home, it was like she was instantly transformed. "Oh, you're *my* people now? I can live *here* instead of at the shelter? Cool!"

We're not sure... probably about a year.

Edit: And yes, she's a cute loveable dork. :D

Good on ya, Mike. Our current pooch is a rescue as well. Here he is giving 100% to his favorite activity:

+1.

And adopting shelter animals is the coolest way to go. Right on, JBI.

How could your employer dictate whether you can own a pet? Are you in company housing? Or did you mean landlord?

Now we just need to figure out why she doesn't like the daughter's boyfriend. Got along with him fine the first time he was here, but today she was barking and growling at him non-stop. He does own cats; maybe whatever he was wearing today smelled a lot like cat?

It also doesn't explain why she was fine with him the first time they met. I suppose maybe at that point she didn't yet consider herself part of the family, and therefore did not feel obligated to "protect" us? He's just a big nerd...

Not always. I had a chihuahua mix that was fine with every single loser my aunt brought over. Loved 'em to death.

Definitely pack-defending. Boyfriend needs to prove to Latte that he's part of the pack.

Cute pooch! She looks huggable too; great choice!

When I was a kid, my siblings and I were walking our grandma's toy collie. This dog loved everybody, or so I thought. But there was this one guy in her neighborhood who she just did not like. She kept growling and barking at him. He kept trying to talk to us, but when she put herself between him and us and bared her teeth, and that's when I said that we had to get going or our dad was going to come driving by looking for us.

Who knows; there might not have been anything wrong with the dude. But I trusted the dog.

Some ten years later grandma got a terrier. That dog was a diva. Would just lay down on the sidewalk and refuse to walk further. Never took that dog on a second walk. But by then I was a teenager and had no patience for a dog with such an unpredictable attitude anyway.

A year or two later, some cousins came back from a walk with that dog, whining that they had to CARRY that dog halfway home! Made me laugh, and reinforced my "no walks with that dog" mentality.

Our previous dog Dezi would do that, but only on hot days. She didn't like being picked up though; so usually the mere threat of picking her up would get her moving again. She loved being outside, but was definitely a cold-weather dog; she would want to stay out in the yard even when it was below freezing.

My uncle has a chocolate lab, and used to also have a dachshund. When they went on walks, the dachshund would get tired halfway through and go "Oh, please, carry me". The lab, on the other hand, would be plowing way up ahead. Pretty much impossible to run that thing out of energy. Still is.

So this morning I had just let Latte out for her morning patrol of the back yard (those evil rabbits are up to no good!), and wiped the mud and mulberry juice off of her paws (challenging, as she was laying on her back writhing and thrashing around joyfully).

She was still on her back (like you see in the middle pic above), and I was sitting on the floor next to her scratching her belly... simultaneously missing Dezi, and asking myself how anyone could have abandoned a dog as sweet as Latte... how the heck did she end up in a shelter in the first place? So anyhow, I start to get a little choked up. Latte rolls over, stands up on her hind legs, puts her front paws AROUND MY NECK, AND GIVES ME A HUG.

I just f**king lost it.

There is reason why they are called man's best friend, all dogs can understand human emotions.

The symbiosis between Man and Dog explains a good chunk of why Man has advanced as far as we have.

Beautiful dog; love that face! Somebody deserves a belly rub. Good for you for getting a rescue; I hope you both have many great, enjoyable years together!

Latte caused quite a bit of trouble yesterday. My wife was out walking her, and something spooked her. She freaked out, got my wife's legs tangled in the leash (tripping her), then when my wife fell down Latte bolted. Got a panicked call from my wife to please come help find and catch her; she had last been seen running across the local park, towards a busy street.

By the time I got my shoes on and headed out the door, Latte had calmed down somewhat and found her own way home. I spotted her just a couple of houses up the street and when I told her to stay she went and sat down on the neighbor's front stoop.

My wife, however, was pretty banged up from connecting with the pavement. Two broken teeth, fractured upper jawbone, and random lacerations and bruises. She's going to need a couple of root canals and crowns, once she's healed up enough for them to work on her teeth.
