Oh, the Centennial is certainly tasty, but All Day hits its target and then some. It's the daily swill with taste.

Agreed. In fact, I'm enjoying a Centennial right now. But I like the All Day too.

Dirty Bastard is also wonderful in its own way. There's a local bar and grill type place that used to do $3 craft beer pints on Tuesdays, and Dirty Bastard was in their tap rotation. Between that and their half pound burgers, let's just say that Tuesday evenings tended to be even less productive than most weekday evenings.

Howard Cosell would have been 100 YO today. In the 70s/80s I hated the man. Now, in the days of bland, I miss him so.

Other famous people with birthdays today: Jimmy Swaggart, Phil Lesh, Ry Cooder. So an even balance of + and - (including Cosell)?

I replaced all of the usb cables in my truck with retractable versions. Neat way to tidy up the pile of cables.

Dude, those are cool. I never even thought to look for such a thing. They'd be nice for phone chargers and stuff where there's a cable laying around somewhere most of the time when it's not in use.

Trying to switch careers with two kids and a mortgage = misery :/ It might help if I know what I actually want to do, but far as I know you don't get paid to sit on a beach and catch fish and drink whiskey.

Heh. And this, pretty much, is why I am still a software dev and not a professional brewer. Well, that and the fact that trying to make it as a brewer is kind of like aspiring to be a rock star -- to make decent money you need to be one of the lucky few.

There's Evergreen Craft Ales here in Ottawa. It is literally a guy (I think from high tech) brewing in his garage and selling cans on a Saturday afternoon. Just a thought for you JBI...

The problem with that model (in general) is that the guy with the "high-tech" background could be completely independently wealthy because of it and thus the entire thing is non-economical.

A friend from high school who co-founded a site that everyone has heard of is now selling artisan ice cream or something.

I don't know that it is profitable, but I do know that it doesn't remotely have to be.

I know someone who is doing something similar. I doubt he's making much money; it'll probably take quite a while just to make back the cost of the licensing and such, let alone the equipment.

If/when I retire I could do something like that. But at that scale, it's really more of a hobby which allows you to make a little money on the side. You certainly couldn't make a living doing it.

All of this talk about beer reminded me of a funny story.

I used to drink, but I don't drink anymore. I was out with a group of friends at the local Applebee's and I asked the server if they had any non-alcoholic beers.

Without missing a beat, the young lady said "No, but we do have $2 Long Islands tonight."

Yeah, no. I'll take an unsweet iced tea, please and thank you.

Strike 1: Not beer. Strike 2: Not non-alcoholic. Strike 3: I will always associate Long Islands with college parties (like rum and cola, I have not had one since then).

While we're making fun of Applebees, I once had a server there tell me "Sure, we've got all those green bottle beers!" (This was in response to me asking what craft beers they had.)

All of the Applebees near me have closed within the past few years... and nothing of value was lost (unless you're really into $2 Long Islands, I guess). I eventually expect them to go the way of Bennigan's.

Trivia: The chain was acquired by IHOP about a decade ago. Guess that's not working out too well for them.

Nice, so Yuengling is a craft beer now.

(I do recall someone "not from around here" thinking it was an import once, from "like in Asia?" no less).

Agree. Their food is not great. There's the fast food but decent like Chipotle, Roti, Chick-Fil-A etc which have decent food but you don't need to tip. Come to think of it, I like the food better than Applebee's. Haven't been there in 5 years or more.

I remember Bennigan's last gasp where they were having $5 lunch offer...yeah, that wasn't sustainable.

Applebee's was always a competent restaurant while I was growing up. Felt like quality took a nosedive IMMEDIATELY after the IHOP acquisition, though, and I've only been back a couple times since.

I was at a conference for work last week which was held at a casino. So by day I went to the conference and by night I was in the casino. And I learned an amazing trick. If you're up by an amount that pleases you........stand up and walk away. Ended up almost $250 on the good for the 2 days

I can't remember Applebee's not being kind of janky.

Realtor coming over at 3pm this afternoon to go over the house. Yay. Dallas here we come. Biggest city I've ever lived in so I'm more than a little nervous. But more opportunities and 90% of my family's in the Dallas-Houston stretch of Texas these days so that's nice.

I just managed to get Acrobat Reader working on my Ubuntu laptop. Why, you ask? Because none of the Open Source PDF readers have robust PDF forms support. I'd done this before on a Linux desktop. but it had been several years so I had to do a fair bit of Googling.

Adobe stopped supporting Linux after Acrobat Reader 9, plus it was only ever available for Linux in 32-bit, so you know it is going to be legacy library dependency hell. Had to pull in all the 32-bit runtime libraries, then manually install several additional dependencies when Acrobat Reader wouldn't start because there were still things missing. And finally, I remembered from last time that Acrobat Reader drops a custom bash completion helper in /etc/bash_completion.d that hoses CLI tab completion (so I went and nuked that).

Took me about half of my (somewhat lengthy) commute to get it done. Praise the lord for the free WiFi on the shuttle bus to the train station, so I didn't have to chew through my mobile data quota to download all those libraries.

What a PITA!

Maybe next time I'll just use a Windows VM. Or Wine.

Just got an email for a new reply to a thread I commented on in 2004. Went to the thread and there's no new replies. Yay spammers who are then nuked by the mods.

I use a VM. I mean, I have the VM for work purposes anyway, so all Windows software that I might want to use for work goes on there. A lot more straightforward than dealing with the library issues on old software.

Lately I've been considering using a VPN for no real reason other than it seems like a reasonable thing to do. After a little research I find that Netflix over a VPN may be problematic. That could be an issue. Off to Google I go for research that's a bit more targeted.

"We use cookies on this site. By using this site you agree, blah blah blah."

Ok, that's only slightly annoying. This has been happening for a while now, and I suppose the intent behind it is good.

As soon as I close this, up pops another banner at the bottom of the page.

"Use Code CB25 for 25% off... "

Wait, what? I'm not here to buy stuff, and what is this doing on a tech news site anyway? I close that one also. A second later the page goes dim, and I'm looking at a full page popup.

"Stay up to date with the latest news and offers from around the web".

This is where I close the tab and continue my research elsewhere. In general I like my job, but I can't help but wonder how many other web developers might actually be ok with all this. :-?

Yikes, warnings of 12-18 foot waves along Chicago's lakefront. Snow within the past week (not unheard of for April, but unusual). The past few weeks have been really messed up weather-wise.

TFW... You're building a custom Linux kernel with out-of-tree drivers, and the kernel build fails because the Makefile for one of the out-of-tree drivers is incompatible with the "-j" option (multi-threaded make).

Yeahhhhhh, Netflix used to work with my VPN without issue. Over the past couple years it's been harder and harder, but you can still "trick" it into working sometimes. I'm not advocating you do that, but it's possible.

I really enjoy the VPN I have been using for a couple years now. It's a tad more expensive than some of the other popular ones, but the app is super easy to use, works all the time, has the options I want, works on macOS/Windows/Android/iOS, and their customer support is pretty awesome, so that's that. Happy to refer you for a free month/week or whatever it is if you want to try it.
