The new thing is the video recording showing just how low it got. Before they only had the ADS-B Mode C altitude data which is intermittent and pressure altitude not radar altitude.

The CVR records whenever power is on the aircraft so it will record engine start etc. There is a circuit breaker that is meant to be pulled after any incident. There have been plenty of instances where it wasn't and when the engineers put power on the plane to tow it away from the incident to check it over then the CVR got overwritten.

Pilots are very loathe to have longer recordings or videos of the cockpit. Think how many times you complain about management at work and then think about how you would feel with a webcam watching you every second you are at work.

There have been plenty of other planes that have landed on taxiways or the wrong runway in the past. Thankfully no major crashes. No pilot goes into work planning to make a potentially deadly mistake. We have to make it harder for the mistakes to happen.

I am exhausted. Two 16 hours days of work later i'm all changed over into the new truck and have secured my first super sized big boy load. I knew that we'd be doing a lot of oversized stuff but i didn't realize that it would be quite so heavy too. My gross weight with my current load is about 91,000 pounds. I'll try to get a neat picture sunday for memories sake.

*edit does anyone else like the candy toffifay. I tried it about a month ago and i've had some every weekend since. How yummy.

If everyone involved was somehow unaware, I would give them a pass. Quickly glancing at the article again, though, this is clearly not the case. Even the planes on the taxiway knew something was wrong (commented "where's this guy going?" and turned on their landing lights; also transmitted statements to the tower). The controllers were aware of the plane being off-course at one point, and also must have known of the aborted landing. Did they do any sort of follow-up with the pilots, or bother to ask WHY they aborted?? (Because if they knew the reason, they should have been :o )

Speaking of which, the pilots themselves are particularly hard to excuse, as they knew full-well that they were less than 100ft from the ground on the wrong runway (or in this case, taxiway). Even if they didn't comprehend everything in the heat of the moment, they certainly had to know they were just involved in a severe near-miss after landing and re-thinking the incident (at which point, the data would have still been available).

The tower told them to go around.

Yeah, you would think so. But we weren't there, and I don't know what the rules are in a situation like this, or (if rules were not followed) who was responsible.

Pet peeve: People who refer to cellphone video recording as "taping" or "filming". There's no tape or film involved, damnit! This news story even manages to do both, in the span of two paragraphs: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/pa-nurse-pl ... -patients/

My new digs and duty.

That there be a 58,000 pound cotton pickin machine. The guys on this fleet have been super helpful getting me informed about the new challenges of moving this kind of stuff. I'm pretty pumped but it's a lot more regulation compliance. For example, i'm unable to leave tomorrow until close to 9 am, because while i'm given a fixed route by each individual state and MUST follow it, i'm not allowed to drive through cities 6 am to 9 am. That sucks when you're just thirty minutes shy of enough time to make it through.

I imagine that can be really problematic on railroad crossings that have a hump. Presumably they route you around those.

Currently in the home stretch of brewing yet another experimental batch of beer. This one's an IPA with Soursop, a.k.a. guanabana. Really have no idea how this is gonna turn out, other than it'll probably be bitter, fruity, and tart.

I'm abandoning trying to battle Poettering's dumpster fires (both systemd and pulse at the same time) until tomorrow, and am considering some memory overclocking for a relaxing change of pace (it's Ryzen, dual rank, and stuck at 2133 for the moment). Memory overclocking should never be a relaxing change of pace. Where did we go so wrong?

I feel your pain. I had a major run-in with systemd myself just a couple of weeks ago. It amazes me that someone with such a sketchy grasp of good system design seems to have been handed control of large swaths of the Linux ecosystem. I wish the Devuan team (systemd-less fork of Debian) luck, but with Redhat behind the move to systemd they've got an uphill battle ahead of them.

These days I tend to shove Pulseaudio off in a corner behind a JACK plugin. That way I've got full support for all the applications that have come to rely on Pulseaudio, and a better (though not without its own quirks) audio stack under the hood.

Nope, but it's designed to be dragged across the ground. The secret to getting over them is not stopping, I can also raise the air bags a bit if I did snag. I had to drag frequently with the boats too so I'm used to that.
You can approach at an angle to help since it brings both the axels closer to the angle but then you have to worry about leaning at the peak.

It varies a bit by state, but you can expect to be stuck to the interstate and only take state routes if it's 100 miles shorter or is needed to avoid obstacles like short bridges or construction.

They only have the authority to route me on state roads after all, that is a bit limiting.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Cree bulbs. I prefer their quality of light and no-nonsense replacements, but the reliability is just awful. I have a roughly 50% failure rate at home, and we recently bought two 5000k 1700-lumen bulbs for the bathrooms at work, and both have failed in less than 6 months. It's an admittedly small sample size, but I've heard JBI and others mention the same thing.

I'll give them that they're constantly refining their designs. I don't know that each change is necessarily an improvement (they got rid of the TrueWhite series), but it does mean that a poor performer likely won't hang around long.

Just had another one fail on Saturday. The glass globe decided it didn't like the base anymore and attempted to leave. Fortunately it got hung up on the end of the LED assembly and didn't crash to the floor.

This time I used an oven mitt to unscrew what was left of the bulb. (Learned that the hard way last time.)

I do not buy Cree bulbs any more.

CREE was a great deal back when Home Depot was selling them for $8/each, then $6, and then sometimes $4 on a special buy...back when all the competitors were 2-3x as much and trying to come up with a bunch of silly alternative designs rather than true 1:1 replacements for the popular bulb styles.

The market has leveled out since then. Philips, in particular, has gotten over that "what weird thing can we build this week" phase and released a nice selection of LED bulbs, including specialty halogen equivalents.

I've been quite happy with the 40W and 60W equivalent LED multi-packs from Costco. They seem to be much more durable than the Crees, and they don't have the dark spot at the top center that the older Crees have.

So my daughter called me at work this morning, to report that there was a possum in the basement. WTF?

Told her to call animal control, and they promptly stopped by and took it away.

Now I get to figure out how it got into the basement. There aren't any possum-sized openings anywhere that I'm aware of. There *is* a "mystery vent" in the side of the house, which I never did figure out the purpose of; maybe the cover came off that. Unfortunately it is now behind some rather formidable blackberry bushes, so I'm not looking forward to this investigation!

My best guess is that the mystery vent is from an old dryer, from before the previous owners finished the basement. If that's the case it probably just ends in the ceiling somewhere...

Surprised you haven't had a mouse problem. Our combustion vents, added sometime in the mid-00s before we bought the unit, were installed through brick near ground level and weren't mounted and sealed correctly, so the caulk eventually failed. I finally figured out that mice were using a crack underneath the vents to enter the airspace behind the brick, exiting through the plumbing access holes in the drywall behind the kitchen sink, and then checking in with the Maître D'. Took two years of intermittent incursions for me to finally figure out what was going on, and an entire Saturday to make it stop.

My guess is that the cover of the vent either fell off or has been damaged by the blackberries. We've had mice in the garage before, but never in the basement.

I just rebooted my phone for the first time in a while. Bluetooth was glitching, and a reboot usually cures that when it happens.

When it came back up, it immediately popped up a Flash Flood Warning alert message. From July 12th. Well that's really useful.

From what I've been told the season for these is just starting so I'll be moving a lot of them.

I've already developed a whole new level of being dumbfounded by people that just kind of hang out by the truck. When you can't even fit in between lanes when centered it really sucks having two people match your speed on both sides and hangout. Their are times when my margin for error is less than a foot.

On the funny side most people are scared to **** of the truck now. I even saw one passenger covering her eyes and fidgeting while passing.
