I actually made it well into my 30's before having a Granny Smith. Well....I'm sure I've had them before, but in an unaltered natural state, and where I identified it beforehand and then noted the taste.
Not a huge fan. Tasted too candy-like; as in, I think it's what most artificial apple flavors are modeled after.

These guys plus Honeycrisp make for a pretty solid apple lineup.
Agreed on golden delicious, and I'd put red delicious in the same category. Some of the most mealy-textured, non-delicious apples I've ever consumed have been red delicious.
