Yeah... a bad nerve is not like a sore muscle. When the nervous system is involved directly there can be very little room between mildly annoying and OMG MAKE IT STOP PLEASE MAKE IT STOP.

Going from Floridas humid 80 degree weather to Iowas dry 33 degree 15+mph wind had an interesting effect today. A double nostril nose bleed. No sooner than I got something shoved up by left nostril my right one started pouring too. I suppose it could just be one really bad one on the left. Either way, I look stupid with tissues stuck up my nose.

This might sound weird, but I'm actually still not really sure what DYMT (dont ya mean type) actually means. This thread looks kind of like a general chit-chat thread as I've seen in other "off topic" subforums. Or is it more random?

Somethings are beyond the ability of man to communicate, and in some cases to understand. The meaning of this thread is one of those things.

Don't you mean type, because when posting to a forum instead of saying things you..... type? Trying to figure it out any further is probably much the same as asking why bad action movies always involve an impractically large bomb that includes a digital display on its timer.

The way I heard it, the DYMT OP was upset with someone else when she started the original thread. The OP was also dyslexic. With that in mind, "don't ya mean type" can be untangled to "You type your words with ill intentions."

But since the new thread appeared without obvious context and such a bizarre title, it quickly became the landing pad for all random chatter.

It used to be a tradition of sorts that new posters were told to go read the entire history of the topic. That fell out of favor in later years as it got so large (though by all means, feel free to try). It also used to be a tradition to post an off-color story periodically; IIRC it was every 50 pages, as the first post on the new page? But the page alignment got screwed up in the incident which resulted in the loss of the first few hundred posts of the original topic.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Since someone (ahem) broke the OG DYMT thread, linking it without historical context is...let's call it "bold".

The name isn't that hard to suss out, if you dig into the internet way-back machine (which jbi linked on the first post of what's left of our beloved thread). Instead of replying to some other thread, imi created a new one by mistake (edit: or maybe on purpose. She's never seemed normal to me), and put the text of the response (or a summary of it) in the subject. And TR being what it was (super weird in a good way), people just kinda jumped on it and made the thread what they wanted it to be: about nothing. I remember many a thread being locked or otherwise redirected because Captain Ned wrote "there can be only one." You can't even search for that phrase because all the words are considered to be too common by the forum software. I know because I was going to link the results.

A bigger chore would be trying to figure out which thread the reply was intended to join.

Despite what many thought, it was not Highlander I was quoting. It was "no, not the one", uttered often by B5's Zathras. Let's just say I received a "strong suggestion" to cut it out.

Well whatever you were doing (I honestly thought it was the Highlander), it apparently stuck with me.

Regardless, this could be the only (or first, at least) forum on the internet with the Seinfeld of forum threads.

IME every forum develops a thread like this. Doesn't matter if the admin creates a dedicated off-topic sub-form, sooner or later someone will post a piece of total flypaper and every fly will stick to it for years thereafter.

Well, we had a "bit" of wind roll through here early this AM:

Image

My car was on the left side of the driveway

Image

Yesterday afternoon, that house was obscured by 100 feet of trees. They all came down between 2:30 and 4:00 AM. Poor dog was a quivering whimpering mess from the sounds of cracking and falling trees. The fallen tree in the background is at least 100 feet tall (that's not even half of it).

Image

When I moved my car to safer ground and put wife's (undamaged) in the garage around 3:15 AM, I had no idea this had happened. Didn't see it until I could finally leave the house around 9:30 AM when the wires on road trap had been cleaned up in one direction. House still doesn't have power (lost it roughly 3:00 AM).

Your lucky the house didn't take any damage. Any signs of leaky roof?

The wind has been nasty in the Midwest this weekend too. I've been driving in 25-30 all morning.

Luckily, that branch is attached to a tree that is being held up by the remnants of another tree. It's just resting there, not holding up the tree. Roof is also completely covered by the ice/water shield rubber stuff. It'll be quite some time before the loggers get to my yard.

Pics sent to insurance agent, so it's hurry up and wait.

I remember back in the bad old days of the 00's when quitting by an email was considered avant-garde.

Everything slowly drifts in the direction of efficiency I guess. It's still a little weird though.

It is. Around the turn of the century (millennium?) I thought that the future of work in the US would be short-term contracts (for all job types), but that hasn't seem to have happened in a general way. Even after the introduction of the ACA which should have encouraged that trend.

I guy here just did it this past summer. Lined up a position at another company, quietly packed up his office, and sent out a company-wide email criticizing a promised employee benefit that had not materialized according to expectations. Then, he kicked back in his chair to wait.

His user account was locked out in less than 30 minutes and the supervisor escort showed up at his door around the same time.

Movie pitch: Time travel is invented, and the first thing the (geek) scientists do is travel back in time to prevent all Terminator movies after Judgment Day.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. Tis a silly place.
