TR BBQ XIV - Official Thread (7/15/17 confirmed)

Thu Jan 05, 2017 8:07 am

Edit: 7/9/17 - TR BBQ hardware swap thread!

Alright, it's time we got this thread started. I already have two dates in mind for this year, so I'll share them right away. The 2017 TR BBQ is going to happen on either July 15th or August 12th. For this year's BBQ I want to tone things down a little, but I'll settle for just not ramping them up. I'd love to have a BBQ where, you know, I can actually spend time with the people attending, but that never quite seems to happen with all the special projects I try to cook up every year. We'll see how that works out when we get within a couple months of the event... Of course, the mainstays of the BBQ will be as normal, I'm just talking about resisting the urge to take it up another notch somehow.

I've also decided not to do any fundraising this year. The ROI just wasn't there, both in time and money. If people want to do a 50/50 raffle, I'll consider it. Generally though, I just want a care-free, no pressure event for everyone. Speaking of which, I'm 99% sure I won't do the live stream either, I know I've said that before, but this time I think I mean it. So few people watch it that, unless they'll really miss it, I just don't think it's worth the effort - and I've heard some attendees say they'd prefer not to be broadcast anyway.

One final note, while I intend to host the BBQ for as long as possible, I think it's fair to say that we've had more BBQs on Lake MI than we will have in the future. I'm not saying this year's BBQ will be the last one at our cottage by any means, but as time moves on and the next generation inherits the property, it becomes more and more difficult to pay for and maintain. So, it's probably premature, but if you've even considered coming to the BBQ, don't wait - I simply don't know how much longer we can host it at this awesome location.

Obligatory pic from last year:
Image

Parking:
1) Let's start with parking, we're going to do the same thing we've done the last couple years, it adds some walking but makes things less complicated overall. Read this post and this post from a couple years ago and you'll have all the details.

Dates:
2) Our normal sequence of events will be in place too:
Friday Evening - Pre-Party 7/14
Anyone that gets into town early and wants to hang out at the cottage and eat some pizza/sushi is welcome!
Saturday Early Afternoon - Main Event 7/15
You know the drill, show up between 11:00 and 1:00 and be ready to feast around 2:00.
Saturday Night - TR After Dark 7/15
FIRE is the one word to describe this part of the BBQ. We'll be sitting around one on the ground and shooting various kinds into the air.
Sunday Morning - Lakeside Breakfast 7/16
Anyone still in the area is invited to come back to the cottage and enjoy an informal breakfast and help put the finishing touches on the cleanup process.

...and now we start the attendee list!

I was just about to PM you about this very topic. I cannot do August 5th or the 12th. I will be out of the state for that entire week.

Potential conflict for 7/15, but won't know until closer to the date.

Well, with only two good options (unless we venture into June?) it looks like July 15th is the date. Hope you can make that work JBI.

Let's do dis. I've got no family trip to the shore to compete this year, count me in. I might even iron-ass it on my bike instead of taking my car or busses.

Last year "life" happened and I had to cancel.  This year, though, I think things will settle down.  I too intend to ride my bike, so long as the '84 Goldwing has some life left in her.  It might be time to upgrade to a GL1500, though.

Sorry to put the crimp on possible dates, but that is when Camp is and not something I can control.

No need to apologize. "Life happens". I may have some (though probably not much) influence over the date of my potential July conflict, and will do what I can to minimize the chances of it landing on the same weekend.

The weekend of the 15th is blocked off in Outlook and on the office vacation calendar.

I fully understand and appreciate the downsizing concept, but I'm still bringing the cannon.

That pic is going to follow me for the rest of my TR life. Good thing it was my best tye-dye. Now I need to step up my game.

I feel like this is a prime candidate for a Pi and a few sensors.

You can put the sensor/module on the potato gun and have sound and light for 20$ plus the cost of LED strips? I think this needs to happen.

Not that anyone really cares, but this is probably the year when I'll finally be able to attend. I'm planning a trip to the US in the summer, including the BBQ. No, I've never been there.

Ned, I think that means we can finally incorporate that "moving target" you wanted to try the potato gun this year.

Oh, if it's Morphine-attendance-year, I guess I'm not riding my bike. We can bring some real cheesesteaks, though.

Ya only need to bring the bread. The rest is really pretty simple. Thin-sliced Eye of Round, Cheez Whiz, and sauteed onions. We'll need another grill, though, as I doubt zgirl would want to share the space. Oh, and the red spicy sauce that either Pat's or Geno's has (can't remember which; been a while since I've been to 9th & Passyunk).

Whiz? Whiz? Filthy infidel. You and your line will be burnt.

Even the bread is a issue. Do you want Amoroso's or what?

The chance of me being able to do this is about 0.0001%, but I had it in my mind to bring along chouriço (smoked pork sausage), presunto (smoked ham), port, queijo da serra (Star Mountains cheese), and ovos moles (sweets made with egg yolks and sugar). And canned fish sundries, yes really, you'd be surprised at how good they are.

Not to mention that bringing them across the border is likely to facilitate a long and painful conversation between you, a well-trained and happy beagle, and a USDA enforcement officer making sure that every piece of meat crossing the border has been fully cooked or will be thrown in a dumpster. Coming home from Montréal, the Food Nazis are worse than the Drug Nazis.

Depends really, the grill is clear by 10:30 and I only fire up one side to make burgers and dogs around 2. Which, if he brings all that, we would just need to know the amount of cooking time.

Otherwise I no, I am not sharing as it does take all that room for me to do my thang!

Well, mark me down for a nice big box of Amoroso's rolls then. It won't be completely authentic, but I think it'll be close enough. Maybe I can bring a bunch of proper soft pretzels to reheat too. ;)
