War is primarily caused by disputes over belief, resources or territory.

Tech is pivotal in settling disputes, whether it be through improved access to all humanity's information, improvement of resource availability, or superior intilligence and weaponry when other options fail.

  • There will never be peace since human nature is greedy, selfish and competitive. It's only the influence of being raised in society that overrides these primally-evolved instincts so until the entire world is populated and governed by fair and utopian civilisations, we will always have war.
  • There will always be tech, since humans have the intelligence to improve on what is current whether as a means to survive or as a means of recreation.

So I choose Tech, knowing that war is inevitable in my lifetime and giving up tech is therefore pointless and stupid.
For the long game, I choose Peace - since without conflict and waste, technological progress is inevitable.

A significant advantage in technical or military capacity can provide a means of ensuring peace.

In the absence of such a strong-arm peace, that same technical and military prowess affords greater levels of devastation in a conflict.

So, I would say that the answer depends on both the presence and capabilities of potential adversaries.

If potential adversaries are technically competitive but willing to cooperate, then peace is the overall better option. There are economic benefits, and prosperity will yield progress even without government-directed R&D.

If potential adversaries are at a technical deficit or are unwilling to cooperate, then pursuing technical advantage is the better option. Technology is essential to maintaining the peace in the first case, or to deterring aggression and winning a conflict in the second.

War is the continuation of politics by other means. Tech defines how long the war shall be.

Now that pollution has gotten to be a significant issue worldwide I don't know that tech is really going to be the answer to the universes problems anymore.

Tech can't fix everything (at least not in the short term, and unlikely a while past that either.)

I can't see anything getting significantly improved for at least another twenty years, and that probably won't be enough.

Peace is just an illusion to see if the unwary will hang themselves with the rope given, and tech will enable my unstoppable golem army to crush the souls of my adversaries. So, uh, I'm gonna have to go with tech on this one.

Re: Peace or tech.

I find it unusual here that the assumption is that based on the poll, we have to assume that because we're imperfect, we will never truly have peace.

I mean, that's true, but the poll idea is elastic enough that I could ask myself "What if a djinni in a bottle gave me the choice, so really, it meant that people would be made perfect, allowing for peace?"

I enjoy tech, a lot.  But truthfully, one of its outcomes (not all of it) has resulted in a number of us being worked harder, asked to multitask more.  Even if it has been used as a deterrent from war, it's also been used as an offensive weapon, and to further organized crime (ransomware).  It has likely been used to rig at least one election somewhere in this world.  It has been used to manipulate and defraud.  Though none of these things could happen without someone's greed, or lust for power, or imperfection, they have made the facilitation of that imperfection easier for someone of intelligence.  So if I had to do without tech for peace --assuming that is, that peace would arise from humans being made perfect --I would.  Because I have known what it is like not to be at peace, (even if that doesn't amount to knowing what war is) and if we could all be at peace, not just with others, but with ourselves, I think we would find the beauty of it so wonderful that tech would matter little on the face of it.

Okay, now that my fantasy is over, back to RoTR.

You know, that's why nobody ever went to war with the Swiss.  They didn't want to mess with guys who could make knives like that.

Tech means tools. Peace means conditions.

Good conditions are more fulfilling than mere good tools. But the right tools are needed to achieve the right conditions with a strong and well-located culture, i.e. Swiss army tech in the mountains that's good for hundreds of years of peace.
