I'm guessing high traffic websites have the same issue as retail stores -- it doesn't matter if it's not better, change has to happen, otherwise the masses will view it as 'has been'.
I know someone in the private <= high school textbook realm, and if they don't produce a new math textbook every 3 years, they lose customers. That makes no sense to me, but apparently that's what the institutions want despite having to pay for said constant recreation.
Without the trendy requirement, I suspect more websites would be like Distrowatch, a site which I find gloriously fit for use.
