RIP Chuck Berry

Sat Mar 18, 2017 5:45 pm

Hats off to a rock-n-roll pioneer.

While it is sad that he has passed, it is gratifying to learn that he continued to perform well into his 80s. I can only hope that I'm still alive, kicking, and doing something worthwhile at that age.

TBH my initial reaction was, "Wait, he was still alive?!??"

This is your cousin Marvin. Just listen.

One of the original pioneers. RIP.

The Chuck is gone...

Sat Mar 18, 2017 9:34 pm

Sad to see the passing of Chuck Berry at the age of 90. But Man, he had a hellof a run. Was still performing into his 80's. He will be missed....

Man, what a legend. Between him and BB King, it's been a rough couple of years for Gibson ES-335s.

edit: looks like we've got two threads here.

Truly a legend by any rank. I am a fairly young person but what did it for me was Chuck Berrys, "Johnny B. Goode". As seen in back to the future.

I saw him perform back in the late 80s. At that time he was still driving himself around the country to get to his gigs, in a big old Cadillac with his guitar in the back seat. According to a friend who worked the show I saw, he demanded to be paid up front in cash (a legacy of all the times he'd been ripped off by promoters) and expected a band to be there to back him. He didn't practice with the band, because every decent rock n' roll band knew how to play every Chuck Berry song. He would just tell them "If you're playing when I stomp my foot, stop; if you're not playing, start." Apparently he would sometimes turn up to find a "name" act waiting to be his backing band (the E Street Band, Tom Petty, etc).

He had some uh, issues, in his personal life but if any single person invented what we think of as classic rock n' roll, it was Chuck Berry.

Also, he'll always* have this, which is more than any of the rest of us can claim.

Too much death this week. First my last uncle on pi day, then an elder cousin in law on Thursday, and Chucky be good on Saturday. Damn.

Was much impressed with the Navy honor guard at my uncle's grave side rites. WWII

I saw him perform at my college in 1972. Chubby Checkers played first. Lost some audio capabilities that night! Chuck came over to the Quad and wound up in our suite drinking whiskey and smoking herb. It was a hell of a night, partying with the granddaddy of Rock and Roll. I can even remember some of it...
