Roadtrip Playlist

Sat Jun 24, 2017 1:30 pm

With the BBQ coming up I'm going to be on the bike for quite some time and I'll need some tunes to keep me company on the winding roads to the BBQ. I'm looking for ideas for music to make a playlist for the long motorcycle trip ahead. I'm looking for good road trip music. I have a wide range of musical taste so throw what you will out there. Thanks for the help!

Hmm... well, if I was making such a playlist myself today I'd go for a mix of:

Classic Rock (Led Zep, Blue Oyster Cult, Fleetwood Mac, Heart)
Classic Prog Rock (Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull)
Instrumental Rock and Prog Rock (Satriani, Liquid Tension Experiment, maybe some Djam Karet)
Metal, Prog Metal, Djent (Mastodon, Cynic, Opeth, Dream Theater, Animals As Leaders, Periphery)
Bluesy female singer-songwriters (Sass Jordan, Beth Hart)
High-energy Fusion (Aristocrats, Jonas Hellborg Group, Vital Tech Tones, Niacin, Uncle Moe's Space Ranch)
Maybe a Beatles album or two
Some other random experimental/avant-garde stuff

I'd have to ponder a bit more to come up with specific album recommendations.

Unfortunately (for you) some of that is kinda obscure, but it's what I typically listen to, narrowed down to stuff that I find more suitable for driving (I left out classical, ambient, Euro-jazz, etc. which actually comprise a non-trivial chunk of my music collection).
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I'm familiar with most of those bands, actually. I'm mostly a rock guy, but I kinda feel like a motorcycle road trip it's more suited to the classic rock, but I'm open to newer stuff, too, like switchfoot or papa roach, even Nightwish.

Rolling Stones is definitely more road trip worthy, IMO

Yeah, I guess the only semi-obscure ones on that list are really the fusion stuff, Djam Karet, maybe Sass Jordan and/or Beth Hart.

Some '80s hair metal would work too. Guns 'n' Roses, Mr. Big.

And maybe some Judas Priest.

Whereas my upcoming trip to TR BBQ will allow me my annual straight-through listening tp all 5 "Phases" of that wholly-remarkable book from the mega-publishing houses of Ursa Minor, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I do believe that Arthur Dent & I would get along very well.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Some of my all time favorite driving albums. Generally upbeat (since I get sleepy while driving)

Metallica - Reloaded
Tom Petty - Wildflowers
Collective Soul - Seven Year Itch
Audioslave - Audioslave
Cake - No specific preference
Blues Traveler - Four is a classic, but they have other good albums also.
Mumford and Sons - Sigh No More is a good place to start.

I also like listening to comedy while I drive.

That's a nice range of eras, DPete27. Thanks!

I'd probably enjoy an audio book but music is more background noise than anything on a motorcycle. I'd rather not get too distracted, ya know?

I prefer to listen to different songs, coming not from the one style. That helps to stay awake and have no feeling of falling asleep.
