I've seen a lot of signs asking people to not stop on the interstate and otherwise dangerous practices during the event. My better judgement tells me I'm going to have to find somewhere safe to stop or else I risk being a victim of said bad practices.

Go to your local welding supply shop and ask for welding glasses in Grades 12-14, or make yourself a camera obscura out of 2 pieces of cardboard. The backers for legal pads work really well. I did this at my then-employer out in the parking lot for the May 1994 annular eclipse and my co-workers were like "what mysterious magic be this?" It also helped that the local classic rock station played Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety during the eclipse period and every radio in the building was at full blast. Yep, a 4-story bank building was rattling and shaking to the sounds of Pink Floyd. I can neither confirm nor deny that certain activities may or may have not taken place in the far-flung corners of said parking lot.

Once you're in full totality, it's safe to look up and observe the corona.

If you aren't already under the path of totality, you're probably better off not even trying. I can only imagine how bad it's going to be up here in 2024.

I'm hoping to take a power nap during the eclipse. I mean really; why stay awake if there's nothing to see? :P

I'm in a 99% zone, but I'm planning on driving up to totality in the wee hours of the morning when, hopefully, the traffic will be manageable. It'll probably be a parking lot on the way home, but I can live with that. Picked up my glasses today, and I'm keeping the car fueled over the weekend in anticipation of fuel shortages on Monday. Estimates are that the population of the state (Idaho) will be increased by 20-30% for this one event.

Try a local gas station? All the Valero stations in town are selling glasses, no shortage of them here and we're not even in a favorable zone.

I've got some friends making plans to drive north...and their plans involve leaving before the weekend is over, and staying there for a day or two past.

It's a shame I can't hit a "Like" button for this post, since you're absolutely correct.

Speaking of, I wonder if my welding mask is still hanging around in the storage building somewhere. Worst case, I'll do that pinhole trick with two pieces of paper, that we did in second grade.

I'm hoping to avoid most of the trouble, but really i'm in north carolina, and am going to be driving parallel to the events path for most of my drive. I'm guessing that means i'll catch a bunch of traffic eventually. Sunday i did a small drive north, already being slightly north of the events totality zone, and noticed the traffic heading south was pretty dense. Nothing insane, but nothing i want to deal with all day monday either.

It's starting to get darker, can we keep it like this all the time. Much more comfortable sun level.

well it's getting pretty dark here but there are still some clouds. The crickets are out like it's almost sunset or something, which is kind of wild.

Nice and clear here. 92% is still relatively bright but I was able to get a couple generic crescent shots by shooting the camera through the glasses. Lots of pinhole effects through the trees out front, too.

Here something weird happened. Right as it reached it's peak rain clouds starting covering it, so the darkness has stayed about the same as the sun is being uncovered.

I was able to see it from ZIP 37327. Pretty cool, I gotta say. Much darker than I thought it would be. Street lights came on, and all the annual cicadas got REALLY loud the darker it got.

Cloudy all morning and couldn't see the sun. Then about 10 minutes before "peak eclipse" the clouds thinned and we had a nice view!

We noticed a "shimmering" shadow/reflection thing happening on the sidewalk and pavement out back at work. Sort of like the shadows cast when light bounces off waves in a body of water. I wonder if that was the sun's corona showing up?

The drop in temperature with the eclipse can cause the moisture in the air to condense out as clouds.

We got 70% here in Ottawa, good chunk out of the sun when viewed with glasses or pinhole projector, light dimmed a bit.

It was completely overcast all morning, but we did get a hole in the clouds right around the time of the maximum extent of the eclipse. Being completely unprepared (no eclipse glasses, no welders' shield, didn't make a pinhole projector), I stacked 4 random pairs of sunglasses and took a brief look through those.

I ended up buying a #10 welding filter (just the bare glass) at a local auto store (they were out of #14s [I wonder why]), which worked quite well and didn't seem too bright or harmful for the short 5-10 second viewing windows I got as I was running from office to office.

In the 99% zone and decided not to drive south for the full 100% effect. Got the boat and took the kids out on the lake to have some fun and watch the eclipse. Apparently a LOT of other people had the same idea.
It never got really dark, but kind of an weird semi-darkness around. We all had the "eclipse glasses" and watched the whole thing. Lots of fun and a great experience for the kids.
