The beach may need some assembly... https://youtu.be/wMDppFUoZjE

This complicates things for fireworks. :-?

You know I'll be there.

A couple of AMD A8-based APU systems.
Several laptops, probably Core i5s of a few generations, generally cheap.

And miscellaneous parts, maybe a Lian Li mATX case.

Huh. Now I see what you meant about needing another ladder or new stairs to get down to the water. So that was taken from the bottom of the set of stairs that come down from the deck?

It's fascinating how the beach is completely different every year.

Maybe there will be a storm in the next couple of weeks that puts the beach back...

It's been in my car for almost a year. :)

Yeah, the beach is crazy, stumps are who knows how old, or washed up recently, just don't know. The video is from this morning, as far from the bottom of the wooden stairs as I could go before the drop. I ran out there before work because I was told the aluminum steps had gone vertical and was asked to assess, but it's not much worse than last week.

I really don't know what to do about fireworks. I think we'll have to scale them way back this year. Building and launching from a large platform/raft isn't really practical, and we can't launch from the grassy area. :(

Yeah, the only solution that comes to mind is put a table in the water and launch from that (while standing in the water). Sounds like a pretty major hassle.

Wait...we are in the front cabin? Like up close to the water? I would say beach but it seems you have misplaced it.

Yeah, but an ordinary table won't do. I was contemplating a fireworks-derrick last year but we ended up with just enough space to work on the sand. Those mortars really kick, and you can lose a lot of height if what they are kicking against absorbs energy instead of reflecting it...

It's probably prudent to postpone our previously planned purchase of pyrotechnics.

Man, I hate to say it but I just don't think that fireworks are going to be practical this year, well, practical is a strange work for fireworks anytime - but you know what I mean. We might pick up some small stuff, but I think it's safe to say we'll be waiting for next time around for more big booms. :(

Last year was more like a Marine Expeditionary Brigade taking a heavily-defended beach.

Ugh.

So, this is what the beach looks like with even just a little bit of waves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL87BBBSlCI

I hate to say it, I mean, really, really hate to say it, but for lots of reasons I just don't think we can allow anyone down to the water this year. The plan to build temporary stairs fell though, and anything I've thought about for using rope ladders or cargo nets is just too much of a liability. There's no sand anyway, so maybe it isn't as big of a loss to just completely shut it down as I feel like it is.

The best course for beach goers is going to be taking a break from the BBQ and heading to either the large Tunnel Park or the tiny James Street beach nearby.

I don't know what else to say, this is just beyond my control. :-?

Could be worse, you could have a volcano in your back yard like those people in Hawaii!

https://www.popularmechanics.com/scienc ... ano-video/

If you play the first embedded video at that link, an aerial view of what used to be beachfront properties starts at about 0:40.

(My wife and I were actually there when this whole mess started in early May. We were even there for the 6.9 earthquake that preceded the larger eruptions!)

This weekend was almost as busy as this coming weekend will be. I didn't get my normal one-week-to-go PMs out, but I will try to do that today. They won't be the usual copy/paste of all the previous year's message though. Unfortunately, they will contain a notice that no one will be allowed down by the water this year and that we simply won't have fireworks either. It breaks my heart that has to be the case, but it's for the best. I hope people still plan on an extended day of hanging out and slowly consuming leftovers from the initial feast, but I understand that with some of the draw to stay until it's dark not happening this year, folks may want to hit the road early.

I am one of the ones that hits the road early anyway, but sorry for all the people who are missing the fireworks on the water.
Hopefully the bonfire, night time left overs, and morning breakfast will still be a blast.

Maybe the swap meet can make up for it. Bring hardware and/or cash and lets have fun.

You can move me to confirmed, but I will most likely not be coming out Friday evening (I believe I posted something to the effect that I might do that a while back).

Will bring beer, as usual. And maybe some sort of side/appetizer. I have a small rain canopy, so I will bring that.
