Average fuel consumption

Sun Jan 14, 2018 2:00 pm

I don't usually pay attention to my fuel consumption but I was going through my dash menu and this caught my eye:

It appears I have a lead foot. :)

We'll all be getting used to those sorts of figures in the near future, The Tesla Model S averages 20.6 kWh/100km for example.

Although I guess the Americans on here are already used to cars returning mid-twenties fuel economy.

I have a Ford C-Max which is a plug-in hybrid. Per the manual, I can get up to 25 miles (~40 km) on a battery charge before switching over to a hybrid mode using gasoline. I've never been able to get that distance but I can get ~18 mile (~29 km) on it. The nice thing is that I can make it to work on a charge (depending on campus), recharge it there during the day, and drive home on a charge. Depending on what campus I go work and what errands I do during the week, my mileage can vary wildly. My best is 66.5 mi/gal (~28.3 km/L or ~3.54 L/100 km) with my worst being a interstate road trip on the highway at 30.7 mi/gal (~13.1 km/L or ~7.66 L/100 km).

I should have titled this thread “Very bad average fuel consumption” or something similar.

I’m pleased that my average fuel consumption is so high. :P

Yikes!

What are you paying for fuel? Our 98 octane is $1.61 per litre.

I think this is just the average for the current trip. This was during my 10 km drive home through the city after work.

I drive a manual and I’m always in a gear that keeps me in the power to squirt through traffic (I don’t dawdle). My tank is currently full and my range is shown as 240 km. I drove to D.C. from Toronto last summer and 6th gear cruising gave me a range of 600 km.

I just found it funny how bad my city fuel consumption actually is.

Usually when I put the pedal to the flaw I have visions of money burning / evaporating / going down the drain :)

I'd love to be driving electric so I can drive how I want without worrying about burning fuel (it's not like it's a major concern, but I am definitely considerate of how aggressively I accelerate when driving)

I'm averaging better than 31½ miles per gallon with about 85% highway driving at about 79 miles per hour (127 kilometers per hour) and 15% city driving. That's less than 7½ liters per 100 kilometers. I consider this mileage to be not too bad for a 3½ liter normally-aspirated V6 putting out 278 horsepower (207½ kilowatts). Unleaded regular (87 octane) is going for US$2.099 per US gallon where I buy it. That's about CA$0.69 per liter.

Cold weather trashes gas mileage. We get about 50 miles less range per tank when the weather is like it has been these past couple of weeks.

I am somewhat pleased my Outback gets close to 27mpg in warm weather, but only 24mpg in this single-digit crap. My 2008 Outback I just traded in was 22mpg with a tail wind down a hill.

I no longer own a car but from the most basic 50HP Renault 5 to the most powerful car I owned (a Mitsubishi 3000GT), gas pedals are binary; If you want to go faster, you want to go faster as quickly as possible.

Fuel economy is therefore a purchasing decision, not a driving style. Lets face it, if you were concerned about gas mileage you'd have bought a 63mpg Prius.

Wow, and I thought my father's recent model F-150 was terrible. I was exploring all the electronics after he got it to see what it could do and to help him learn it, noticed it indicated a 12MPG average with his light foot. Nowhere near the sticker rating, but he kept it anyway.

My 21 year old car is about 24MPG for city and 33MPG for interstate traveling. Best run I got out of it was 35MPG. Hoping it sticks around for a couple more years, but when the engine/transmission goes I'll be looking at a full electric to replace it.

Texas has those same prices for 87 octane unleaded.

Yep. In good weather (and a fair wind) my '05 Civic Hybrid gets in the upper 40s, generally ~47 MPG highway. For the past couple weeks it's been closer to 42.

Why would you be "pleased" with a bad personal outcome? As far as How Stuff Works, the energy embodied in the fuel used has to be transferred and dissipated through all parts of the engine and drivetrain. So, accelerated wear of clutch, gearbox, differential, brakes etc. Even from the fuel pump to exhaust.

It's a bit like being "pleased" with self-harm. Entirely irrational.

What you _should_ do is take a course in motor mechanics and learn to service and maintain your car. If you learn how a car works you might actually drive it more sympathetically and achieve better fuel consumption and reduced maintenance costs. Which isn't to say not having fun - just using more brains than balls.

Now, if you're going to be dashing in and out of busy traffic, slipping into tight gaps there are also negative outcomes for other drivers (unfortunate enough to be) around you. Considering traffic flow as a fluidic system you're introducing turbulence and will negatively influence other drivers' fuel consumption and average speed. And plain just being an annoying prat. That's where I step in. If you behave like that around me you might suddenly find a large ladder-frame chassis flat bed truck swerve in front of you causing you to perhaps lose the contents of your bladder or colon. You might throw a hissy fit until you see the large, heavily built psycho (albeit with a science/engineering degree) in the truck smiling his psychotic smile at you. That's when anger turns to nervousness turns to outright fear.

Coincidentally enough, that's my favourite series of movies which I've purchased in multiple formats since VHS. Coincidentally, I live in the country where I-III was filmed and have visited the film sets. Coincidentally, I drive a (considerably newer) ute (truck) version of Mad Max's car (Ford Falcon). I am the most courteous driver but I just need an excuse. Live for those moments.

I get around 100-120 mpg on average. It comes at the price of a top speed of 35 mph, but it's cheap at the pump.

That would be a situation where I would not want to go faster, simply because one cannot go faster in a queue than the rest of the queue.

I drive a chevy cruze diesel.
Diesel is about $2.89/gal
In the summer I average 43mpg with 116mile commute and highway speeds up to 80mph per tank. (speed limit is 75)
In the winter I average 38 to 40mpg for the same commute.

Computer often records 50 to 58mpg average over 25miles (all highway) depending on windspeed, traffic, drafting etc.

I have done 700miles on a tank and probably had another 100 miles left till empty before I filled up with 1/8th of a tank left.

The Forester usually averages 27/28 MPG in summer and 23/24 MPG in winter (snow tires & winter gas), but the recent 0F temps have me at about 20 MPG according to the dash widget. Instantaneous MPG only comes back up once the engine is fully warmed up (which takes quite some time).
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.
