That was exciting. We’ll see how many years late it will be. Great technical info though.

It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up this morning. I'm still trying to get my jaw off the floor over the potential of artists funding space flight.

There were alot of great points to the "presentation"
*Very informal style presentation. Elon started off a little rough but warmed up to it
*My buddy Tim Dodd asked about the engine configuration, very glad he did. Having a single engine across both the lower and upper stages makes alot of sense to start off with
*The Japanese guy did a great job with the teleprompters
*"I choose to go to the moon" was a great line. I can't help but think that was intentionally referencing Kennedy's speech
*My guess was $1B that was contributed, but probably closer to $500M. That was the ballpark development cost of the FH
*I have Alan Bean's book from an artist who actually walked on the moom https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0867130504

I stayed up for it. Good stuff. I'm very impressed. For those of you who need some great photography, I highly recommend Trevor Mahlmann and John Kraus. I support them on Patreon and they are incredible artists.

Soyuz launch abort at about 2 minutes of flight time, which is when boosters separate.

Crew is safe after a ballistic reentry. Sounds like it was a lot gentler than the ballistic reentry in 1975 which pulled 21G :o but still rough at more than 6 G.

This is going to be interesting, do you continue to launch on the Soyuz that just had a failure or do you try and hurry up the Commercial Crew from SpaceX and Boeing?

I'm glad both of the astro/cosmo nauts are safe but given this mishap and the leak in the Soyuz ISS capsule, the entire Soyuz program is FUBAR at this point.

SpaceX and Boeing really REALLY need to get a man rated system working.

Right now at least SpaceX is ready to launch their demo technically, they are waiting on paperwork sign-offs. I'm hoping this incident accelerates that and removes some red-tape.

I hope it doesn't. Cutting corners at NASA led to Apollo 13 and Challenger and Columbia-type disasters. Having an alternative from either of those folk would be good, but doing it right is more important than doing it quickly, IMO.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. It's infested by crypto bull****.

I was going to post exactly that. The safety reviews were put there to prevent another Apollo 1 disaster.

Space is never cheap, but I'm certain he was suggesting a good+fast approach instead of fast+cheap approach to the red-tape cutting. This situation probably merits a bit more expense to fund a proper expedite.

I was meaning fast-tracking the decision making to ensure that it is on the top pile for review; cutting corners would be horrible.

Soyuz launch abort caused by sensor failure at booster separation

Nice video on that page showing one of the boosters not separating properly and impacting the main rocket.

A new, small dwarf planet way beyond Pluto and even Sedna, has been confirmed. https://www.npr.org/2018/10/02/65345344 ... plications

The Japanese Hayabusa2 probe which has already deployed two rovers and a lander to date, is now prepping to land on asteroid Ryugu in a few months in order to collect and return a sample to Earth. https://www.space.com/42268-hayabusa2-b ... nding.html If not seen yet some of the photos from the project are amazing.

Kepler may be gone, but it's legacy is still continuing. Almost 3,000 confirmed planets, and likely the very first exomoon: https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/03/res ... n-exomoon/

The catch... you have to wait 4 months for the sensors to be placed and start returning data, and I thought the DMV moved slow.

For the SpaceX launch tomorrow from Vandenberg, they didn’t get approval to land back on land due to a NRO rocket a couple pads over, so they are going to put the barge about 30 miles offshore and call it a coastal landing.

@Kougar
That was joke aimed at my impatience, more than anything. I have seen the picture, and read something about how it was going to take several months to set the equipment up on the surface, because they were going to recreate the landscape exactly here on earth and then try out the commands on earth first before even attempting anything on Mars. This of course makes perfect sense, but in my head I thought it would be more autonomous and have it done in a few hours.

This is cool: Brian May of Queen (who also has a PhD in Astrophysics) is issuing a new track to commemorate the New Horizons flyby of Ultima Thule: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3Jm5POCAj8

SpaceX's DM1 is vertical on the pad. I can't wait to see this take off. IT was supposed to be the 17th-ish, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. More likely at the end of the month.

I assumed Dagwood left out a question mark that should have come after "why" -- the "why?" refers to the link breakage, not the IAU designation.

Super stoked. Also, so weird to see it without the normal F9 fairing.
