RIP: Stephen Hawking

Tue Mar 13, 2018 11:31 pm

You're closer to the stuff you studied and shared with us. RIP.

BBC obit.

Edit: just realised it's Pi day today. Huh. There's definitely a certain symmetry in there.

Lived over fifty years with ALS. That all by itself is what's most amazing to me. I mean, yes, he has all those other amazing achievements. But still, the human body is kinda fragile in a healthy state and he was diagnosed in the 60s.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

RIP, but I'm still staggered and amazed he survived to 76 years old.

Sure, his condition worsened over the years, but the 'experts' presumed he'd be dead by the end of the 1960's. As rubbish as living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was, we as a species must be incredibly thankful that it allowed one of the greatest scientific minds in recorded history to live out his full term.

"I have no idea. People who boast about their IQ are losers." – Stephen Hawking, when asked about his IQ.

also this one because I wanted something a little more inspiring.

“However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. Where there's life, there's hope.”

I used to work with someone who never missed an opportunity to mention the fact that he was a Mensa member. It got pretty annoying after the 3rd or 4th time.

You know they let toddlers into Mensa. Literally. I'm not even remotely joking.

....I don't... uh.. what?

Like they take this seriously?

I'd find it irritating the *first* time he said it.

And today is Pi day, Einstein's birthday and the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death.

Can we load up 3/14 any further?

It's not as ridiculous as it seems, given that IQ is your "mental age" divided by your physical age (x100).

This does not surprise me. Your low BS tolerance is legendary 'round these parts.

yeah sure, but putting "advanced for their age" babies into this "club" automatically means this isn't remotely about a "society" but rather about a status.

I read this elsewhere - "Life dealt him a losing hand, but he used it to win."

Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death, that's not today.

I fondly remember reading a Brief History of Time during my High School state exams. He will be missed.

That is the most amazing thing for sure. And the depressing part is how much more could he have done had he not had ALS.

It doesn't have to be depressing. I hear that the diagnosis actually pushed him to work faster, given he wasn't supposed to live long enough to necessarily finish his doctorate.

The universe in which Dr. Hawking contracted ALS might be the one in which humanity was given more.

(Though of course I wish he could have had it both ways.)

You know, this offers a unique opportunity for an epic prank. Slip an MP3 player into the coffin set at maximum volume playing one file that consists of hours of silence and then something like this.
