Create your own nightmare cat creatures!

Tue Jul 03, 2018 9:58 am

https://affinelayer.com/pixsrv/index.html

It takes a line drawing, and attempts to map cat-like features onto it.

My first couple of attempts:

Drawing with a mouse in a small window on a web page is a PITA. Not that they would've looked much better if I'd been using, say, pencil and paper...

Awww, they look so cuddly in their own messed up way! Does it purr?

A certain James Bond movie comes to mind:

It seems to have added some extra arms... and yeah, I couldn't resist the urge to try and coax it to putting eyeballs at the ends of the tentacles.

And a result of feeding it some random scribbles:

Unsurprisingly, it generates nice tribbles:

...and now you can hear them burble-cooing. You're welcome.

How long does it take to process on your PC?

A few minutes here, so quick iteration is impossible.

Well that's the interesting/strange thing, which I was just going to post about...

On my work laptop (2015 MacBook Pro), it takes a few minutes. On my personal laptop (older HP EliteBook with a Sandy Bridge CPU), it doesn't seem to work at all (crunches for a minute or two, then stops without displaying anything). On my home desktop (AMD FX-8350), it takes about 5 seconds. All running recent versions of Google Chrome. So there's definitely something a little odd about what they're doing, maybe a weird dependency on the JavaScript JIT compiler and what CPU instruction set extensions your system has?

I wonder if it has anything to do with how Spectre mitigation is handled on various platforms... web browser Spectre patches can have an impact on JavaScript compilation.

Ok, NOW your creatures are turning into nightmares. You have sir, indeed generated some freaky looking stuff there.

Congrats.

What are your graphics cards?

I've tried it on an Ivy Bridge/HD 4000, no OS or BIOS Spectre/Meltdown updates, on a browser with V8 6.4.388.41 (equivalent to Chrome 64).
The first time, after a minute or two, I had a graphics driver crash. I think nothing implements WebCL yet, but maybe the site uses WebGL for some heavy lifting?

Ahh, interesting... you may be onto something. GPU in the home desktop is a GeForce GT 720; personal laptop and work MacBook Pro are both some sort of Intel IGP, but the work one is newer. And come to think of it, I was browsing from within a VM when I was trying it on the MBP, so all bets are off (was probably not using any sort of hardware acceleration).

Interesting. Just tried it on a Dell with HD 3000 iGPU (Sandy Bridge). Works on the first pass, crashes on the second.

Then tried again on a Dell with HD 4000 iGPU (Ivy Bridge) and an Nvidia 5200-series mobile dGPU. Laptop LCD is connected through the former and the external display through the latter. Regardless of which display has the browser window, the first pass only generates the left half of the image, the right half is always dark gray. Crashes on the second pass.

Tried disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome and running it, and the fan kicked way up but the result was never resolved.

Huh. For me it worked every time on the MBP VM (albeit slowly). It's stable and fast on the AMD FX with the Nvidia GPU. In addition to running a 6 year old previous gen AMD CPU, it's not even a decent Nvidia GPU by modern (or even semi-modern) standards; since I don't game on this system I went for something cheap and passively cooled when I put together this build. Weird.

They generate almost instantly on my MBP in Chrome. Doesn't seem to work right at all in Safari. I'm getting the hang of what it thinks is what. Every circle is an eye, so that's helpful.

Scroll down the page and you can make buildings, shoes, and handbags, too.
