Amazing Thai Rescue Mission

Sun Jul 08, 2018 8:58 am

This has been all over the news for a while, but it looks like the rescue operation to get a Thai boys soccer team out of a flooded cave is fully underway and some of the boys have made it out.

I've done some nice casual open-water diving in Florida & the Caymens to see coral reefs, but this rescue mission makes doing that look like riding a bike with training wheels vs. doing the Tour de France. I've got a whole lot of respect for the bravery and skill of the rescuers and a big prop to the boys for keeping the mental fortitude to survive this long.

Cave diving is dangerous in the best of conditions.

I was following this story and thankfully recent news reports all have been rescued from the cave:

This article shows a diagram of how difficult it was was the rescue team to navigate the narrow and flooded passages:

So very glad to hear the good news. And sorry for the hero who sacrificed his life while saving theirs.

All safe. Although this may have cost quite a bit, I think it is greater in national pride for Thailand. Very proud to see the rescuers' poise under fire. Those men are the finest of what we have.

I'm still trying to figure out just how far back they had gone when the waters came up originally, especially given the stories over how small some of the underwater passages were at rescue time.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

4 kilometres which would have taken hours. The coach should be forced to pray at the grave of the dead rescue diver every day for the rest of his life. And clean the grave and sleep there at least one night per week.
