The Witcher has a Geralt..

Tue Sep 04, 2018 1:20 pm

https://media.netflix.com/en/press-rele ... tcher-saga

I personally think it's a (casting) mistake for Cavill to be Geralt. (..not unlike Cumberbatch as Strange.)

In both cases the actors just don't portray "brooding" and "dark" enough for their respective rolls (..assuming the character is portrayed as originally, which Strange fell short of).

..and yeah, Cavill is to pretty.

On the other hand Cavill does do cynical well, so that's something in his favor.

My pick would have been:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2090702/?re ... _fc_cl_t23

(..not only does he look more like the game version, his portrayal as Roan in the series the 100 was just shy of the cynical snarky remarks you'd expect of Geralt - but lethal and brooding he had down pat for that role.)

I'll reserve judgement until I see some more info and/or the actual series. I'm a big fan of the games and the books, but stranger things than Henry Cavill doing well in a role he may not look suited for initially have happened in TV.

The directors/editors/producers look to be decent though. Here's to hoping they make something good.

edit: FWIW, i think this guy might have been a good fit - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0182666/?ref_=tt_cl_t7

I have mixed feelings. I like Cavill and think he's a fine actor. Also, having such a big name star will surely help the series with credibility and viewership. It also demonstrates how seriously Netflix is taking this series. On the other hand, he doesn't really look like a Geraldo to me and indeed might be too good looking for the role. Hopefully they do a good job in the makeup department.

I think Cumberbatch has done pretty well as Dr. Strange, but I haven't read the comics so maybe something is getting lost in translation there.

Yeah, Geralt of Rivia is no Superman, but that's up to him to make it work. I'm still more interested in the idea of a Witcher show than the bizzarro-world Lord of the Rings series which Amazon has in the works. I guess we'll see.

Hmm...Reserving judgement, but he's kinda pretty for a Geralt, the makeup department will have to hit him with a few ugly sticks to get there.

..Cumberbatch did a good job with the script, it's just that it wasn't really Dr. Strange - far to light-hearted and "cheery". (..though many of the Marvel movie Hero's and Villains have gotten similar treatment.)

-also looks like a good choice.

-of course Cavill might just give us the line he gave to Hammer in The Man From Uncle:

Well He wouldn't be my first pick. I am more interested to see who they cast as Yennifer, Ciri, Triss, Phillipa, Shani, and Vesemir. In the books Geralt often played as a supporting character to others.

It's a common joke among fans of the games to mispronounce Geralt, poking fun at both real people who get it wrong and deliberate conversations in the games. In Witcher 3 an NPC refers to Geralt as Gerald.

Yes, yes, it was funny when the tax man said it. But really is it? It truly is, "you had to be there moment."

Each time I see any news about The Witcher it starts to seem like a joke to me. The did an awful miscast and made pretty cheap costumes. What could possibly go wrong?

A TV show based, for all practical purposes, on a video game. What could possibly go wrong?

Bunch of haters.

I'm gonna screenshot all these posts when it turns out to be the best show of our lifetimes.

If Clint Eastwood was a bit younger, he might make a good Geralt.

Not sure about Nolte or Busey?

Not sure I agree with that one. When they first announced the show I though Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Eric Bana would have been good choices. Of course this is almost entirely personal preference.

I know it's easy to bash, but man, this Witcher attempt is going to be a train wreck. Cavell as Geralt? The obvious choice would have been Nicholas Coster Waldau now that GOT is done. Travis Fimmel, if still a bit young, would have been a good choice. He was great on Vikings. Josh Holloway and Daniel Craig might have been decent choices as well if they weren't busy doing Colony and the next Bond film, respectively. But Cavell is a terrible choice.

Still to good looking.. and a little too old (for a younger Geralt).

Mads Mikkelsen anyone? He's kinda busy now but still could be nice Geralt.

the trailer is alright. I'm still trying to figure out what plot lines they are going to follow. After reading about the SDCC panel it seems that Cavell didn't have a stunt double and has gone all in in playing Geralt.

I still play Witcher 3 today so in my mind all the key players should sound and act a certain way. That may be the most off putting about the Netflix series is that Geralt, Yennifer, Ciri, and Triss will 'sound' different.

I am too great of a fan of the books and games, so I am optimistic about the show.
