SpaceX boosters had an issue on approach- lands in sea

Interesting:

“#Falcon9s always target just offshore for exactly the reason we saw today. The last part of the landing burn adjusts their landing point to the ground pads. This worked exactly as designed. Ditch if they can’t make it. Protect the pads.”

The engines stabilized the spin. :o

Not bad, all things considered.

From Elon Musk:

"Grid fin hydraulic pump stalled, so Falcon landed just out to sea. Appears to be undamaged & is transmitting data. Recovery ship dispatched."

"Pump is single string. Some landing systems are not redundant, as landing is considered ground safety critical, but not mission critical. Given this event, we will likely add a backup pump & lines."

We went over to watch the launch. Quite a beautiful day. I was watching the YouTube stream and when they cut the video, I heard the sonic booms and feared the worst.
All-in-all, nice to see the precautions work the way they are supposed to.

SpaceX puzzled by how the booster killed its roll and stabilized itself:

Hmmm, second thread for the same booster landing when we already had a perfectly good Space thread? Just sayin'.

Who isn't following Ole' Musky on Twitter, anyway?

My previous thread was for a different booster.

Wouldn't that be the other way around? Spin stabilization is a technique to prevent rolls.

Oh I looked at it again, I see what he's saying. It stopped spinning then fell over for a gentler landing.

Yeah, that part about the engines overcoming the spin is what amazed me the most. Wonder if there are any rockets even close to having that level of attitude control compensation built into the engines. Though the computer being able to account for the spin while keeping the rocket both on course and oriented vertical in of itself is pretty impressive.

There was only a single center engine in the landing burn. Regardless of how much you could gimbal it’s not gonna do anything to counter the rotation, the deployment of the legs caused enough to change in inertia and also friction probably help more than anything to stop the spin.
