Almost 20 years

Tue Dec 25, 2018 10:59 pm

So I saw a post on Ars about their 20 year anniversary and said '****, TR has to be close as well'.

What are you're best memories of TR from 'back in the day'? One of my first was disliking Forge cause he was a bigger a-hole than me. Then I met Champs, Matts, Chode, Kevin, Kutarhl, Nellie, and the others - and I've kept in close contact with them for many years.

Who/What are your fondest memories of 20 years ago?

Who did you hate? (I know, it's always got to be about me) more than DiMaestro?

Personally I followed Damage from Ars to TR for his review of Doom (I know, I was younger then) ... and stuck around for quite some time.

... on a personal note - I've known many of you all here longer than I've known many of my family members - and that's weird. Am I old are all you too young?

Jr. Damage showing up to out that guy who stole Damage's review.

I've been here and at Ars for pretty much the entire run; during the first few years I didn't bother registering because I didn't think I had anything to say. No frickin way it's been 20 years! :D

Wow, nearly 20 years! Lots of fun things to remember:

1) there is no dash, dagnabit!
2) the green towel (gosh, is there a link for this? But some remember it I’m sure)
3) leor’s bird problem (pics are still here!)
4) Beer (JBI), techno, photography
5) correcting minor spelling and grammar mistakes in articles and Damage actually fixing them
6) the various revolts over changing the home page
7) team 2630
8) Usacomp2k3’s live reporting from the path of a hurricane
9) PerfectCr’s truly epic paint (pics are gone...)
10) Inside the Second
11) Journalistic integrity and independence
12) BBQs (never attended, but they helped define the community) and various local meetups at restaurants and gun ranges
13) DYMT
14) Various times we helped each other through hard RL situations

Yes!

That’s what comes to my mind first when I think back on the last 20 years. Lots of stuff from the community, but none of us would be here without the leadership of Scott and later Jeff. Here's to another 20!

The blogs and podcasts were a highlight back then. The Damage Report, Tech Dissonance, etc.

Especially hard hitting was Cyril's piece on government surveillance and I really liked how each podcast episode will somehow involve talk on stuff to eat around NYC. Mmmm cronuts!

I understand starting with Jeff K's (lol) tenure most of the staff took to twitter to voice their thoughts, but I've always liked the blogs more because topics could be covered with greater depth.

Only at the 16y mark with TR, myself (by registration, anyway, I may have lurked earlier than that).. But my strongest memory was seeing the refugees from Aces Hardware flood in after De Gelas went to AnandTech and Brian Neal lost interest in keeping that site going. There's a few of us still kicking around here.

I remember one blog about setting up wireless comm in the third world. That was fascinating and I am still curious what happened to the effort...

I can't think of anything, I went into an IT job and became jaded which completely put me off tech sites for awhile. Now that i have completely left the industry i'm slowly coming back to tech.

Search for "green washcloth" if you want to dig it up. IIRC it used to be a tradition that there had to be some sort of epic (and frequently off-color) story every 50 pages in DYMT. That tradition eventually faded out, and then (later) the page numbering got screwed up by some forum borkage.

I've never gotten into social media; the only SM account I have is LinkedIn, and that barely gets used. This site has been my primary online hangout since I joined back in 2002. (I also used to be pretty active on Usenet way back in the day, but that's been useless for a long time now and I haven't even looked at it in 10+ years.)

I have no idea how long I've been visiting these sites, TR, Ars, H, at least since around 2003. I didn't really start focusing on TR until probably the giant SSD endurance test of a few years ago.

I've been visiting TR since maybe 07'ish, but didn't really become active in the forums until my original home base (Firingsquad) went under. That would've been somewhere around 2012. Doesn't seem too long ago, but I guess it's been a few years.

Well I joined back in 2002, after I followed a link here from Storage Review and lurked for a while. Ended up staying and have been here ever since, at one point I was the top poster and traded that between Licketysplit. Now I do not post very much, but I still do read a lot. I did finally get that inventory mostly done, that was a godforsaken project. And as one of the founding TR BBQ members, thanks to everyone who has hosted them over the years and shown up for them....started out very small and grew extremely large. Here is to another 20 years with TR.

Would be interesting to be able to generate charts of posts over time to see when we were most active posting. Seems like something that should be possible with our forum data...

2630?

Dare I tell a secret? Kuhtarl made that team run. He installed on *every* computer at his work - it was close to 100 systems. And the biggest Kicker? He got *permission* to do it. Called it 'alternative heating' or some such BS.

I was so proud of that.

And if anyone here don't know who Kuhtarl is: I'll just submit this post. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8987#p89389

**** I miss that wanker.

This is the oldest thing I can scrape out of the Wayback Machine, and it dates from October 30, 1999. Since it's news article #9, it's gotta be close to the OP OP.

It also warms this mod's heart to see the liberal application of the original TR royalty, a/k/a Duke Nuked (check the comments).

Holy crap - I think that's what lead me here. Thanks Ned.

I actually shed a little tear with MHZs in it. :)

I did until I read the comments. And the things we posted actually make me a little ashamed.

Nice to see Null, Forge, Zenith etc - however I am embarassed by how we acted.

Correction - more than a little ashamed. I realize it was almost 20 years ago but most of us should have still known better.

I lurked for a couple of months before I joined the forums. I think I was here at the beginning. I didn't come from Ars, but heard about TR at H and Rage3D.

I had fun with the F@H contest and the whole doodyhead thing.

The original DYMT thread was fun. I don't think I posted in it, but I read just about everything. Never got into the new one.

I’m partial to that one as well. I know I was reading as early as 2002 because I did an english paper/presentation in High school on benchmarking and I quoted Damage in it.

I’ve enjoyed meeting some of y’all in person.
I enjoyed my stint as moderator.
I’ve enjoyed sharing aspects of my life with a community.
I remember I had, in my signature, a countdown timer to our wedding and someone “hacked” (My fault, it had 0 security) it and wrote “she dumped” me in its place.
