TR BBQ XVI 8/10/19 - Official Thread

Edit 7/19: If you feel so inclined, donations to the BBQ fund are appreciated.

Let's get this out of the way first, at this point in time, every TR BBQ could be the last one I host on Lake Michigan. Beyond that, I can't speak for alternative plans, so every TR BBQ could be the last one, period. I just don't know. So, make sure you attend this year if coming to a TR BBQ is on your bucket list, because I can only promise the event will continue one year at a time.

Image

I don't know about you, but last year's TR BBQ seems like an eternity ago. I guess that's the product of watching a slightly over one-year old turn into an almost two-year old during that time, heh. Anyway, the first order of business is to pick a date. I believe it was generally accepted that last year's BBQ was a bit too early in the summer. What do you guys want to see for this year?

BTW, winter isn't over yet, but the coast is already getting madeover by the various forces of nature. My parents hit up the cottage over the weekend and shared that there's actually a decent amount of beach at this point. Hopefully, we can take down the velociraptor signs this year. :) Yeah, there's no beach.

Edit: 6/19 - let's get this post into shape....

Parking:
1) Let's start with parking, we're going to do the same thing we've done the last few years, it adds some walking but makes things less complicated overall. Read this post and this post from a few years ago and you'll have all the details.

Dates:
2) Our normal sequence of events will be in place too:
Friday Evening - Pre-Party 8/9
Anyone that gets into town early and wants to hang out at the cottage and eat some pizza is welcome!
Saturday Early Afternoon - Main Event 8/10
You know the drill, show up between 11:00 and 1:00 and be ready to feast around 2:00.
Saturday Night - TR After Dark 8/10
*record scratch* So, last year the fire and fireworks part of the BBQ didn't work out. Sadly, it seems like that will also be the case this year thanks to high lake levels. That doesn't mean folks can't hang out and chat as long as they would like though, so plan on sticking around if you're so inclined.
Sunday Morning - Lakeside Breakfast 8/11
Anyone still in the area is invited to come back to the cottage and enjoy what's become the traditional breakfast feast served up by my mom and pitch in with cleaning up the aftermath of the BBQ.

...and now we start the attendee list!

Thanks for offering up the cottage again and all the years prior. As a parent I can say the days are long and the years are short. It does feel like forever because the wee ones change so darn fast.

I, and probably the rest of the family, are planning on going. They are looking really forward to it. The only date that I know of that won't work us is the weekend of August 17th.

Not the weekend of July 20. I'll be in Cooperstown, NY watching Lee Arthur Smith, Sr getting inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Do people feel a certain way about having the BBQ on the 3rd or 10th of August? I'd like to pin this down fairly soon. Please reply ASAP.

Alright, that counts as about 50 votes for August. I'm going to try and make the final call by tomorrow afternoon, so speak now or, you know, possibly miss out.

I'm good for either date, but not sure I can afford to make it this year. Our vacation is only a few weeks before that. Hmmm gotta put the thinking cap on!

Technically it wouldn't be a "crash" since it isn't a closed group. All that's really required is that you're you're a forum member (current or former), able to get yourself to and from the BBQ location, and willing to contribute a dish to pass, drinks, or whatnot.

Whether or not you're a "rat bastard" is entirely up to you. ;-)

Seeing how cold it was last year hopefully this year will be warmer.

Already got some old crap to foist on StarFalcon. :D

I don't have an official date for 4H this year so I can't confirm if I'm gonna be able to make it.

Hmmmm...not sure I can make this year. Have vacation a few weeks before that, but that's not going to stop me from trying. Last year (my first year) was a blast.

Toronto is a 6 hour drive, some 385 miles. I drive further than that on 2 separate days to get there.

what's the policy on sleeping under a tarp on the beach?

(Realistically I'm interested, need to validate my finances though just started a new job in a new location)

Sorta depends on whether or not there's beach.

$1600 for airfare for us or a 19 hours drive (each way). Probably not likely to happen this year, but you never know.
