No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

Hey, in this sea of pro-Intel shillery at least we have the strident and conspiratorial banter from Kyle at [H] to keep the fight alive!!

RIGHT!

RIGHT?

NO!! IT CAN'T BE! THEY GOT HIM TOO!

Is it wrong that my first thought was, hmm, I wonder if I can get Kyle/Intel to sponsor the TR BBQ this year?

Seriously though, this is yet another bad sign for the type of content we know and love.

While I'm not a personal fan of Kyle I'm hoping this is just an elaborate prank.

I don't think it's a prank. This listing is no longer on Intel's site.

Think of it as all just a part of The Odyssey ... plus it includes pom-poms, megaphones, human pyramids.and maybe ray-tracing!
(Anyone ever seen Kyle in a short "enthusiast skirt"?)

I'm the furthest thing from a fan of Kyle, but the death of HardOCP is a real loss. It was easily one of the top few enthusiast sites out there by readership and one of the few left that have been around for well over a decade now and had established themselves.
One more major site quietly dying off is bad news.
I'm taking this as an indication I should probably be upping my subscription to TechReport. We're running low on big enthusiast sites worth caring about, I really don't want to see TR die off too :(

Translation: the site is not making enough money, so I’m doing what’s best for myself.

Nothing wrong with that, of course. After Steve got fired for lack of funding that was a sign that it was just a matter of time before the whole site went, though It would have been nice if Kyle did what Scott did and hand on the reigns instead of mothballing the thing.

We have two major players in the enthusiast community each working for a major CPU company. The leader of the blue site works for the red team and the leader of the red site works for the blue team, ironically.

Wait Wut!?

So the [H] is now dead!? It was one of the first I trusted back in the mid/early-90s and which lead me here to TR. Sad, Sad state of affairs.

What I thought when I saw that forum title:

The boots were approaching again. The door opened. O'Brien came in.

Winston started to his feet. The shock of the sight had driven all caution out of him. For the first time in many years he forgot the presence of the telescreen.

'They've got you too!' he cried.

'They got me a long time ago,' said O'Brien with a mild, almost regretful irony.

Yeap. If you're like me and you spend a decent amount of time here but don't like dealing with advertisements, it's only fair that you throw TR a few bucks by subscribing.

I remember a certain poster in the early days of the [H] forums, who didn't shy away from who she was and her "profession" at the time. Really threw me on who really identified as geek. 8)

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I do recall an adult film star back in the day on there. Is that who you're referring to?

Adam gave me his blessing to say whatever I want in response to this thread and future threads/comments orbiting this topic. Until now, I've been holding back because I "know too much" as they say. I don't have any NDA'd knowledge, that's strictly Adam's business, but there are things brewing behind the scenes of TR. Rest assured that maintaining the independent nature of TR is the highest priority, but it comes at a great cost.

That said, it is no exaggeration to say that RIGHT NOW is a critical moment for the future of TR. I know that to be true literally and figuratively. I can't make any promises about the future but I do know that there's a higher probability of there being a future if gerbils pitch in and sub for whatever amount they see fit. Money can't solve everything, but it can solve some things, and it can buy time to solve others.

You're probably not going to see a big post on the front page repeating these words or detailing just how dicey things are for TR and other independent sites out there. This is yours heads-up. This your "wake me when you're serious" moment. It's no joke. Subscribe if you can, spread the word if you feel so inclined. The truth is that one of the few ways that TR sticks around is if the community that values TR's work (which we recognize is in limbo right now) steps up and funds it. You can make a difference if you choose to.

I'd love to go on, but I have to head out. Ask me whatever and I'll give my best answer when I can.

I know you probably can't post it - but if you could PM me any details you may have on "how much" is needed to maintain operations (and where we are now), I'd love to hear!

Adam's blessing was technically open ended enough for me to share that information. However, that is something I just don't know.

TR is on the decline, PCPer too, H is dead (if this is real) - the options for legit tech news and reviews are dwindling. AT is hit or miss, same with Tom's. Pretty much just leaves Gamer's Nexus, IMHO.

By AT do you mean Ars Technica? It’s not really a tech site anymore, just a news aggregate.

Anandtech.

Ars Technica is utter garbage. Slightly better than the likes of the Verge, IMHO.
