TR Blocked on Base

Wed Apr 10, 2019 8:01 pm

I work on an Air Force base. They just blocked TR with their Great Firewall and classified the site as 'Games'. At first I got a TSL error but after clearing my cache it shows blocked. Real bummer. I like to read the site during my lunch break. Now I'd have to leave the building and get on my phone.

TR doesn't host any actual games. That's a bummer. :(

Thank you for your service.

Contact your IT department, they are geeks and will sort it out surely.

The category block is likely mandatory. Some things are up to local IT, and some are decided by NETWARCOM. If vendors categorize the site properly, the issue goes away.

The product formerly known as Blue Coat ProxySG (now Symantec ASG) is the most likely culprit. The warning page may or may not identify the proxy software, though.

FWIW, I know Blue Coat was wrong last week, and I submitted a request for review. (Takes all of two minutes on their site.) Their info is better now, but some people don't download and approve WebPulse data daily.

If the site is using a different proxy, a review request will have to be submitted to the relevant vendor.

Symantec

That sums it up nice and tidy, doesn't it?
A most unfortunate, Freudian, double entendre is that hotel named "Budget Inn."

BlueCoat practically has a monopoly on the US government proxies. That may change. WebSense was bought by Raytheon, a huge government contractor, and rebranded as ForcePoint. Having seen the two products I'm not impressed with either for various reasons. But if I had to guess, Raytheon bought ForcePoint to get a play in the space. The largest buyer of IT stuff in the world is the US government.

Not Bluecoat doing the "Games" category, probably going through another service:

Sorry. I hadn't thought of that meme in years.

It's entirely possible that they manually classified it.
