1)How about an article on data recovery on the cheap?

For instance, every few months, someone i know, who I have told in the past to backup there data zillions of times, comes crying to me saying my PC/Laptop wont boot.
These are people who I have spent time with, taught them to use free software to back, introduced to google drive/dropbox/one drive, helped get external hard drives for, advised them to have 3 copies of data including one off site, etc...

I got stuck with them and their failed SSD/mechanical drive, and then get stuck trying to recover the partition, diskpart, bootrec, etc....

How about an article using some free/cheap tools to fix that, as well as recover lost photos an what not. Toss in something about the latest free rescue disk/usb.

2)Cheap, easy and secure wifi stuff.
Stuff we can buy and install ourselves to dip our feet into IoT, and still get good results.
Security camera, thermostat., or this main shut off value (although its out of budget)

I'd settle for a water sensor even, like FIBARO Flood Sensor, Water & Temperature Sensor.

Be careful, some here have short fuses and are easily triggered. You could be sitting on a powder keg.

Colton,

While you might not be able to encompass everything all at once, if you're doing it several times a year, I'd absolutely love a review on cooling fans.

I've only seen one set really, truly worth its salt in the past few years. It is now a decade old and most of the products are gone or very updated.

https://www.bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/c ... ase-fan/1/

I'd love to see someone work more with this to know fans that move air well, but move it quietly too.

Might be close to starting the poll... Here's what I think I could work with so far:

potato cannon building
Optane experiments
Flash drive/external SSD/microSD testing
real world RX 560 usage
steak preparation methods
OBD2 stuff
cooling fan tests

If you got any other ideas, get them in pretty soon. :)

This vapor chamber sorta looks separable from the cooling fins... Oh Derp! :P :D I think those are just keepers for the screws. Sure would like one to play with that does not cost a bundle.

Aww, my Plex GPU transcode quality showdown didn't make the cut :(

I would be careful with the potato cannon from a legal liability standpoint. Some people are sue happy.

I think it would have made for an interesting piece, but not by me. I don't have the eyes for that kind of thing, just like I don't have the ears for sound card or headphone testing.

Jeff's review was a good start for sure. I think there is still some questions when it comes to a price trade-off though.

Given the prices of SSD's these days I don't think there's much to investigate.

Have to agree with DDB here. With the price of SSD's these days is there a point to an optane cache?

There's a good chance I would have chosen the steak-related option regardless, but you really caught my attention with the "exotic" addition
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. Tis a silly place.

If I had the hardware I'd give it a go. But I don't have a Ryzen G model, modern Intel GPU (still on Haswell), or an NVENC GPU.

Although I voted for Optane experimentation, because it sounds really fascinating, Exotic Steak Prep and Potato Cannoning were very close seconds! I'd pick those three.

It's the price of memory that's the problem, not SSD's. RAM is still more expensive than it should be. The RAM tradeoff vs Optane is just as much a question, if not bigger than Optane vs HDD.

If you're going to call it a "grudge match" I can't resist that option. But it better end with drive failure, living up to the TR SSD endurance testing marathon. Or else the loser being stomped a la the Office Space copier.

At the moment Optane is just another type of solid state drive operating over NVMe like any other. Intel insists on calling it "Optane memory" regardless of that, so they clearly want there to be ambiguity around this. Perhaps that's precisely because the strengths of Optane just don't make a huge difference on the desktop. I don't believe that's new information. If there was an investigation done on Optane I think it should be focused on endurance testing or something else which we might not have seen before.

But my vote is still for steak. :P

Optane as branded, yes, but the underlying technology is byte-addressable as NVDIMMs. That's where the real value lies for those problems that really need more RAM but can't afford it.

Are there any SSDs available which can actually use the byte level addressibility? The last time I looked into it there weren't, but I haven't really been keeping track.

It got my vote too. A reliable portable solid state backup seems to be difficult. The ones that use harddrives seem to hang in there but the SSD ones I've tried have all died after a few months (e.g. that 100GB drive from Sams Club). I've even put a Samsung Pro 256GB in a carrier with USB3 ports. And now the bugger is inaccessible which is maddening. Gott get it in a PC and see if its readable or kaput.

Can the poll be placed on the front page, to replace the one about electricity use? Or do you want to limit the poll to actual members?
