Not even a whimper. By the time the plug is pulled on the server, there won't be so much as an echo. It has been an honor, people, but this place is done.

I first started coming here around the PII/P3 transition time. I was a lurker for a little and then signed up and posted pretty frequently when I was in college. Posted less often due to time constraints of school after that but still dropped by a few times per day for several years.

I remember Damage having to buy his own GeForce 5800 (I forget exactly what model) because Nvidia didn't like him calling it a Dustbuster and people sending him money after to help with the cost.

I remember Austin writing friendly, encyclopedic posts and using around 300 smileys per entry.

And the Athlon XP glory days! Got a pencil? I was so excited to get a 2100+ to replace my overclocked Celery 400 (to 600!)!

Damage spearheaded the inside-the-second analysis, which a lot of other sites still don't bother doing.

There still isn't anything as good as the Old TR. For content or community.

Wow. I still check the site about twice a week, and still the same. It's too bad that one of the best went to one of the most obsolete so fast. I used to visit tweakguides often but he closed up awhile ago also. If they shut down this site hopefully they will back it up like tweakguides https://tweakguides.pcgamingwiki.com/ as there is a lot of good info here.

I usually frequent techpowerup under the mechtech handle, crispy is there also. It's amazing (in a sad way) the effect reduced advertisement income has had in tech sites. I always wondered if there was more operating systems (as in easy to use and functional with everything like windows) if it computers would still be so abandoned. I don't think win 8 or 10 helped the PC.

It's both sad and amusing that few old geezers still believe this site will publish anything interesting anymore. Anyway, for people who just want to read hardware news - there is always Techpowerup which has similar format to old TechReport and has very active comments for articles and forums. There are also Overclock.net forums which are very active and also post recent hardware news and reviews. If you want to hang out and chat with other people about hardware and you are too old to use Reddit - use those sites.

I often chuckle when I see a comment from crispy there, as it's usually one of the few sane comments in a given thread.

Ouch, I started planning a new computer build for the first time in a decade and knew where I wanted to get my reviews from. But then I discovered a distinct lack of reviews — now I know why. :(

This is a great time to build a new PC. AMD RyZen 5000 CPUs are announced and go on sale this week. NVidia GeForce RTX 3000 graphics cards are announced but in short supply. AMD Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards are announced and due this month.

Eric F is a personal friend of mine. I was the one who referred him to start writing for TR awhile back. Seems he was the last one actually creating content and has such moved on to bigger and better things. I stopped coming to TR when the, uh "new management" took over other than reading Eric's articles. Its almost sadder in its current state than if the domain just stopped working or redirected to a shady RX site or something.

A month since the last news post now. Nothing on the new AMD processors at all. Seems safe to say the site is cooked. :(

Cheers to better times. Good run and take care.

Was wondering the same thing. Wishing him the best as he appears to have moved on from his occasional article posting on the main site.

I just wanted to post about something that I find incredibly sad...

If you go into any articles written by Jeff Kampman, they now say they were authored by Renee Johnson.

https://techreport.com/tag/gaming/page/10/

Compare...
https://web.archive.org/web/20190727051 ... -monitors/

I just... I don't even know what to say.

I knew the site was dead, but when you so shoddily take over a site that you claim to be the author all of the articles written by one of the last serious tech journalists on the site before the takeover... that's inexcusable.

Probably just cleared a couple of fields and filled them with her name without even considering the fact that it was changing the author of all of Jeff's articles. If I were him I'd be more than a little upset about this...

That issue was discovered and discussed when The Event first occurred. No explanation was given...not that anyone expected one at that point based on how everything else had gone. I suspect it had something to do with importing everything from the old custom CMS into WordPress, and everything that was imported was attributed to the account that was used to run the import. But again...that's just speculation. I too find it shady. If my suspicion was the case, they could have created accounts for each of the previous authors and imported them in batches using those accounts. It shows either a lack of experience in doing that kind of migration, a lack of skill, a general "don't care" attitude, or a combination of all of those.

I see.

Sorry, I did a quick search so I wouldn't be beating a dead horse, and but I didn't find any mention of it.

Oh well...

Boy, I'm not liking the way the field of tech journalism is going.

It wasn't in a forum post. It was a comment on one of the early articles after The Event:

https://techreport.com/blog/3464346/all ... g-tr-work/

There was more discussion around it somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Even if we give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was purely incompetence, it's still incredibly **** that they let it stay that way. It's one thing to wreck a website - quite another to take credit for someone else's writing.
