They're not interested in paying for someone to put the time in to a review. That's why Adam was the one who had to ask for Ryzen 3, Navi, and Super samples. John didn't want to invest. This TR would never pay a living wage for good video reviews, even if it was seeing increased traffic.

Out of curiosity, what's the going rate for a written CPU/GPU review?

As someone still writing them professionally and enjoying the hell out of it, I'll say it's somewhere between nunya and bidness.

LOL. Because I realize the time and effort to write these things I'm also curious. Not like I would ever usurp those that are currently doing it because I enjoy the writing of others. But straight up curiosity.

My guess would be "more than you might expect", if you're looking for a comprehensive well-written review with lots of benchmarks.

When the wife and I reviewed stuff, the only payment was keeping the parts. Sometimes you came out ahead of minimum wage. Sometimes you came out far behind.

Writing a good review takes A LOT more time than most would guess - it's only a good unpaid job if you're bored in college or jobless...

And I imagine it takes a lot of practice/experience before you are up to doing a good CPU/GPU review.

Forum search has been broken for a week or more. Searches return zero hits or show only decade-old results, even when recent posts have plenty of occurrences of the search term.

Yeah if you search for the word "search" you get around 5 recent results and then everything else is from 2002.

What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Yup. He also wrote the custom CMS that TR was using before the changeover.

Not retaining his services was a grave mistake on the part of the new owners.

Yep. Being capable of unbiased and informative reviews is definitely an acquired skill of any product. Computer components as complicated as CPUs and GPUs are even worse.

Another listicle is up with comments closed. Sigh, I'd hoped at least that the powers-at-be would realize that those things aren't helping.

And those arent even good ones. There are better lists of tech leader quotes out there ;) I mean if you're writing a high school or low level college paper maybe the listicles assist. ?shrug Hmm I wonder how much a listicle costs. I couldn't imagine more than 5-10 bucks.

The only serious review I wrote of anything was over 20 years ago when I was in grad school. It was for a popular technical software package, written for a now defunct website. I got a free copy of the software, which had a sticker price of about $1k. I guess technically that meant I was paid better than minimum wage for the review, but the software wasn't worth $1k to me (in that I would never have paid that much for it, even now that I can afford it).

So.... at least in my very limited experience, this is not the kind of thing you do for real money.

Just wanted to chime in a say, yeah, that's about right. That's why I always volunteered, to help the site and the community. If I'd taken money for my reviews, it would have just been depressing. Appreciation from gerbils is priceless, though.

Agreed. The gear is a bonus, the cool insight into the industry and the appeal of writing reviews that are appreciated by others is the main driver.

It's not a way to make a living, in general.

Especially these days where print media is generally in a decline, and YouTube monetization seems to be extremely consolidated these days. You can't make a living on 5k or 10k YouTube subs.

It's the same generic click fodder that turns up in most Google results these days. This stuff is popular partly cus it's effortless. A few generic Google's about **** you know nothing about thrown into a **** list and Google still lists it as top results. It's my dream that this sort of garbage would be filterable in some way. I don't think I've ever seen a list article that had anything unique, productive, or useful to offer. And that doesn't even consider how full of affiliate links they usually are.

I can see it. I think there is an overlap between techies and gear junkies, and I bet they're using some sort of data analytics/advertising profile data to justify making the post.

I'm sure there's a reason they picked those specific items, but there's some REALLY cool stuff out there that I'd like better.
