I still wonder where Alexa gets its data and whether it's reliable.

TR uses Amazon ads on some pages, but not all. And is it that common on the web?
I think not many techies would use the Amazon extension.
And toolbar extensions aren't a thing anymore.

Alexa rankings aren't associated with Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant. The rankings were around long before that.

Whether or not they're accurate I don't know, but I doubt it matters much in practice. 3DMark isn't what I'd call accurate, but that hasn't stopped world+dog from chasing it.

Anybody who's installed an ad blocker knows that browser extensions are very much a thing. Here's what Alexa has to say about its data, which is as good as it gets short of private Google analytics.

Our Data
Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of many different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

Our global traffic rank is a measure of how a website is doing relative to all other sites on the web over the past 3 months. The rank is calculated using a proprietary methodology that combines a site's estimated average of daily unique visitors and its estimated number of pageviews over the past 3 months. We provide a similar country-specific ranking, which is a measurement of how a website ranks in a particular country relative to other sites over the past month.

Whether it's true is another story, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least that people bounce pretty quickly. There's nothing on the front page to keep them here. That was true in March when I started writing again, it was true at the end of July when I stopped, and it's true now.

Does that matter? I have no idea.

Today's xkcd seems relevant.

Pretty sure "SEO approximation" is even worse, but I think I've complained about that enough in these threads already.

The second one was written by someone significantly older, judging by the picture.

I simply must trust the more experienced entrepreneur on this one. What a shame. Even the opinions of the new TR owner are wrong.

Maybe it was the plan all along to just run it into the ground. I can't believe they'd put any resources into the site (they barely did, but still), it's hard to believe they'd do ANYTHING except just let it die. I really just don't get what they thought was going to happen with the changes they made.

I feel pretty bad for Scott, Cyril, Geoff etc too. So much of their good work over literal decades has been thrown in the trash because of these people. So sad. Time to move on I suppose.

I was a long time lurker, and I learned so much from this site. Like 2003-2012, I learned everything about building my own PCs from this amazing place, back in the day when Damage was running the show. Slowly but surely my tastes changed (I stopped building PCs, quit gaming, moved to a much more exciting mountain state and took up mountaineering, bought Macs and iPhones instead of androids and messing with my Linux machines), and right around that time the mobile revolution was just starting to take off. It seemed the writing was on the wall for the tech websites which focused on nerdy computer hardware and high end gaming/computing. What was my home page slowly just became a once a week visit, then once every two weeks, to now, where it has been a once in every 6 months (for basically the last 5 years) just to see if the site was actually even around anymore. I was surprised to see it was, and not surprised to see how poor the content and website has become. When Jeff K left I knew it was truly over. From a long time reader, but very limited poster who preferred to read the great stuff from the experts, seeing the inevitable decline is still sad, especially since this was a site I visited and trusted more than any other, and it gave me the confidence and knowledge that I could build my own PCs back in a time when I was a poor and struggling college student.

Nobody here probably even knows who I am, but I am signing off, too. Damage saw the writing on the wall (and Anand) and they left right at the right time. But at the end of the day, 15+ years is a pretty damn good run, and I am sure this site educated untold numbers of gerbils. Peace out to my other tech brothers and sisters. Thanks for all the help over the many years.

The epiphany I had is that the wake up early column was written to piggyback on the Richard Branson column linked in the wake up late column.

The lack of change on the front page (Articles from months ago). I think I am going to bounce as well. I was a lurker for a long time before I joined in 2007. I stopped visiting regularly in 2017 (life changes) and this past year I was only coming on once or twice a month. I decided to jump back on TR and become a regular again to find a new design / owners and I had hope but that is no more.

I'm not sure that actually proves much, readership was likely in precipitous decline due to lack of new articles for a long time before the site re-design.
It's entirely possible viewership was declining at a much more rapid rate before the redesign and the new focus has stemmed some (but not enough) of the bleeding.
Not that I particularly believe that, just point out that one chart isn't indicative of much.

There's a pretty clear kink in the slope of that line/curve (https://blogs.worldbank.org/impactevalu ... ink-design). I think the key question is -- what's the date of that kink?

Right after Zak's review, I think. Right around August 20. You can click any point in the line to see the date and rank.

PCPer has a similar trend line FWIW.

Its hard to believe that Anandtech and ArsTechnica have such low ranks compared to TR. Are you sure higher numbers are better? Or is number 1 the best?

Lower numbers are better...number 1 site would be the most visited site ranked by them.

Maybe so, but the entire graph is post-redesign and it obviously shows that nothing of substance has been done to reverse the trend.

So the Alexa rank has fallen from around 51,000 to around 90,000 since the click. I guess SEO is not all that.

Gotta figure some of the old ranking was the old guard hanging on for a miracle. When they got punked instead, they started dropping the site from their daily browsing and feeds. Can't SEO without content to back it up.
