Goodbye TR, it was a great run

Mon Aug 19, 2019 10:47 am

Sorry to see the site decline so far. Mostly sad for us enthusiasts though who basically have nowhere left to go to get our tech news and in-depth analysis, save for a couple youtube channels like Digital Foundry and Gamers Nexus. I guess it's just the end of an era.

The SEO blog posts dominating the front page and disallowing comments, these were the last straws for me.

Peace out like a greased trout.

Personally I still like reading news and reviews on TechPowerUp - the reviews are not detailed but they tell me everything I want to know in terms of things like FPS comparison. I agree that there is a huge decline in amount of quality hardware reviews and analysis everywhere and sadly Tech Report is not doing anything meaningful to fill that space since new owners do not treat their new toy seriously enough. Anyway, see you around, maybe not here but somewhere on other sites.

To the TR members who have left, or are planning to leave:

Please check back in periodically.

The forums are still here, same as they ever were. There may be new developments. Just swing in once a month, or every few weeks and take a glance around, see if you have any PMs, etc.

As an old saying has it, there are two types of people when the power goes out: those who curse the darkness, and those who light candles.

As you have probably noticed by now, this place place has become like a deserted lunatic asylum: just a few random people wandering around who don't believe that their beloved home is no longer supported.

The new "management" has ignored all the polite requests (and less subtle ones too!) to fix the ungodly mess they made back in July and now nearly everyone has drifted off. Although they didn't f**k with the forums they are getting quieter now.

My 2 cents: TR is now dead, and only a miracle will rescue her. :(

Would the last one out please switch off the lights.

When I was a kid, the biggest employer in my area (Caterpillar) moved hundreds of jobs from my area and a lot of families up and left at that time. For a while there was a billboard as you left town saying this exact thing.

Can't light candles when forum posts aren't shown on the front page, and every new 'article' (read: Clickbaity, trash op-eds with no soul that exist solely to link to other trash rags and generate click revenue) are closed by default for comments. I started a subreddit at https://old.reddit.com/r/TRGerbils that is no longer by invite; feel free to congregate there. I don't intend to moderate it at all, but i'm hoping it can be a way for us to stay in touch until something more central and focused pops up that we can migrate to. I'm half expecting Renee or whomever to start banning the dissenters and closing the forums tbh.

If your TR handle is different from your reddit username, message me there (im the only mod) with who you are here, and I'll flair your name.

Agreed, I keep opening it every time I get on a PC. But now after looking for shortbread, I jump to the forum.

Sure, like everything else, the sentiment was an exaggeration. Peoria was down around 10% from 1980 to 1990. It's downstate Illinois, though, so the population has been on the slow decline basically ever since.

If by "improved" you mean a coat of 15 year old paint was somehow applied without fixing the structure...

Here is a quote from his own shrine to himself : "John is a genius when it comes to online marketing and getting our business found online." - Lane Livingston, Fiber.net

I think he should be doing this to his own property,

Between a lack of empathy for his own portfolio, the codswallop that comes from "comment-me-not" Reneebot, and the first grader web interface "designer" I think we are now well past the miracle stage. I only hang around now to see how many other people are mawkishly following this death spiral.

Edit: readability

Although they didn't f**k with the forums they are getting quieter now.

But they did.
The recent posts link was my daily read. Having to go in and surf all the categories... no thanks.

I visit once a week now and that is already drifting to ever few weeks.

Or just put it in your bookmarks toolbar?

(I have it in mine (in Firefox) on all 4 computers I use more than 3 days a week...)

Edit: and email updates! Gmail filtering gives me new topic notifications in my watched subfora, and new post ones for threads I've posted in. Is good.

Meh. I’ll stay in the forums for as long as they last or until they ban me. I don’t post much anymore, but I see no reason to rage quit this place just because the front page is dead and all the talented people have left the building.

I expect the forums will last until they either A) pull the plug; or B) ban the current mod crew because we somehow manage to piss them off. TBH the spam hasn't gotten nearly as bad as I thought it would given that they broke our most effective tools for dealing with it when they cut the site over. Probably because it's less of a target for spammers given that the site's popularity is waning... heck, it might even manage to stumble along for a while with zero spam control.

SPAM is definitely up since the cutover, given the IP proxy making the HoB unusable. I whack a few bots most every morning.

Just like JBI, I'll hang around until I'm made to leave. Blame that "duty" gland I seem to have inherited from my father (LTCOL, USAF(R), Ret.)
