Coronavirus COVID-19 precautionary measures?

Tue Feb 25, 2020 9:52 am

ATTENTION!

It appears that the best precaution so far is to wear face masks.

With more than 70,000 identified cases, anyone here taking any precautions? The virus being airborne means that simply caring about personal hygiene and avoiding sick people isn't going to cut it. You may need to shore up your immune defenses. Here's a few tips (though please tell your families not to sue me if you still die from COVID-19):

Lysine 500mg 3 times a day: This is equivalent to eating around 150g of chickpeas. Maybe 300g of hummus might also cover it.

Coconut derived Monolaurin: https://www.healthline.com/health/monolaurin

Moving on into drug territory, we have this: https://www.longdom.org/open-access/d-l ... 000151.pdf

It's a German Aspirin formula so may not be available easily: https://www.deutsche-apotheker-zeitung. ... -ende-2018

The first link sounds like it is still at the purely speculative stage.

AFAICT the second link only cites tests in mice and in vitro tests.

As far as the third link goes... what the heck does intravenous aspirin have to do with anything?

Given how easily it spreads, we really are relying on the diagnosis and containment/quarantine measures put in place by the authorities to minimize exposure. Beyond that, all you can really do is try to avoid large crowds as much as possible, and eat a healthy balanced diet to help your body maintain a strong immune system.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

It's the same drug tested in the anti-viral journal, D, L-lysine acetylsalicylate + glycine.

I know. Chemically, Aspirin i.v. 500mg is D, L-lysine acetylsalicylate + glycine.

If your choice was "die or try experimental drug", what would you choose?

That's not the presented choice.

Title of post is literally "precautionary" measures.

The virus is airborne and reaching pandemic proportions. You could take the drug as a precaution or in case you get infected. Either way, it's supposed to stop the virus from replicating. How effective that might be in saving your life is unknown. But it's better than nothing. You have a better suggestion?

Don't go to areas of the world where the virus is currently spreading, and if you're already in one, minimize your contact with the public?

Did you get a flu shot this year? If not, then statistically you're far more likely to die of the flu than COVID-19. If you want to take a meaningful precautionary measure, go get a flu shot.

Even if it isn't widely spreading in your part of the world, general avoidance of the public is the safe way to go. Homebodies unite! (Not really, because that would be exposure.)

You're seeing tons of people pull out of conferences in the US, even though our cases seem fairly limited, and that's just because traveling to and through multiple crowded areas will always expose more people to illnesses. Since COVID-19 has no vaccine and has killed people, it's no wonder why people are just choosing to avoid human contact.

Meh...apples and oranges, IMO. COVID-19 concern is probably over-hyped(/hysterical), but the fact that you can get a flu shot makes these different. I guarantee you that there would be lines to get a vaccine for this virus if it was available. Partly for the hype/hysteria, partly just to reduce the risk if traveling.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. Tis a silly place.

The point I was trying to make is, unless you're in Wuhan or on the Diamond Princess, you're many, many times more likely to be exposed to the flu. Someone who hasn't had a flu shot is much more likely to get infected with (and subsequently die of) the flu than COVID-19. So if you're worried about dying of a viral respiratory infection, the most sensible precautionary measure you can take is to get a flu shot.

Avoiding it is going to be difficult. What's making COVID-19 unique is that most of the cases are not severe; it usually looks like, and passes, as either nothing or a mild flu. The worst cases seem to be hitting mainly those who are repeatedly exposed (e.g. medical personnel in the outbreak regions), and the elderly. By comparison, H5N1 was rapidly identified and isolated because it hit all age groups severely, its symptoms came on rapidly, and it was fatal more often than not:

April is a bit far off. Wonder what the infection statistics will be like by that time.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/ ... lZqeSgzY70

Billions at stake for those involved in organizing the Olympics, all because Chinese authorities had to pretend that things weren't that serious and failed to take swift action to contain the infection when their doctors first discovered it. They need to be sued in International Court for not coming clean ASAP. It only seems fair, after all the damage they have caused and more in the future.

That's plain vanilla Aspirin and different from the one I linked to. This is a version of Aspirin I.V. that can be inhaled directly into the lungs to block the replication of the virus. Still undergoing trials though.

Actually that's partially true by a lot of accounts. (e.g. Read the CDC's account) Sure they dismissed it early on, chalked it up to SARS. But once the infection rates reached the exponetial they instituted marshal law. It could have been much, much worse if they had waited even a day or more longer.
